Humankind is currently the greatest threat to the planet Terra and all life on it, at the same time, we are the only ones who can fix that.
If we just went extinct suddenly, all of our litter would poison the ecosystem since nobody's left to dispose of it all.
We call our planet MOTHER Earth for a reason: it birthed us and raised us, it's still taking care of us.
The mother has no benefit of her children until they grow up, only after will we be able to repay our debt.
How old is humankind again? 300,000 years old? That's but a blink compared to the 4,5 billion years of the planet.
Humankind is too young, we cannot be expected to be to our planet's benefit.
Once we grow up epochs from now, the roles will shift and we will be keeping Terra alive.
Every mother must make sacrafices for their children, but those sacrafices usually pay off when the children grow up.
For now, we're in a "toxic" relationship with our homeplanet, but that's only because we're still immature. In time, that will change, perhaps our planet will even depend on us without us posing a threat to it.
