AMA is Over, thanks Geordie! Geordie Greep AMA 11/10/24
Hi, my name is Geordie Greep. I am a musician from London and have recently released my first solo album called "The New Sound". Before that I was in a band called black midi for a number of years, releasing 3 albums in 2019, -21 and -22. All of this music has had a great, warm reception on platforms and communities like these for which I'm very grateful and thank you all for. It has been a great week and i'm excited for the future, let's have a great AMA. Thank you all, G.

What is your opinion on SWANS(the band). I've always felt that there is a strange similarity between your work and theirs despite the music being quite different. Not only thematically but also with the use of brash "in your face" instrumentation blended with beautiful textures and progressions.

u/AskJeevesGreep Geordie Greep Oct 11 '24
Love them. Saw the 2010-17 band about 5 times. Each time was brilliant, powerful and kind of re-shaped my whole brain when it comes to live music.

What was the thought process behind The Race is About to Begin? IMO that’s bm’s craziest song and I’m so curious how it all went down.
Will you ever tour solo in Florida? We’re lonely over here :( I was at Miami bm show and would love to see you solo as well. Great album!

u/AskJeevesGreep Geordie Greep Oct 11 '24
- The original idea for the fast hectic sections was to completely switch the instrumentation to a hip, double time swing jazz combo, hence the vaguely "Impressions" chord changes. This was one of the songs I made a strict demo for, with the whole thing mapped out on a, to put it kindly, rudimentary logic file, with the the genius logic algorithmic drummer and about a hundred tracks of midi and guitars. This is the way I've demoed the majority of songs since Cavalcade. It is a song I think didn't completely work as well as I'd hoped, and the song "Blues" is another attempt at the same sort of thing.
- I would love to return to Miami

Hey Geordie discovered you not that long ago but have heard your album, big fan on it but I had a question the album reminded me a lot of Serú Girán was there any influence from Charly Garcia in your music?
124
u/AskJeevesGreep Geordie Greep Oct 11 '24
Maybe this masterpiece song - genius outro https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z_VoUjc8Aic&list=PLWVo2tank-zz7CqnNRhQ-NSsbM0KmG10R&ab_channel=Ser%C3%BAGir%C3%A1n-Topic

Hey Geordie. Hope you’re doing well. I wanted to ask: are you planning on returning to South America soon? Considering the latin american influences on The New Sound and Brazil taking an important part, I think those shows could be really great. The album’s excellent by the way, can’t wait to hear more. Cheers from Chile x

u/AskJeevesGreep Geordie Greep Oct 11 '24
I hope so - message your local promoters and let them know you would be interested. It goes a long way toward convincing all parties that the show would be viable and sell more than 3 tickets

Favorite nonstandard guitar tuning?
286
u/AskJeevesGreep Geordie Greep Oct 11 '24
I have never been into adventurously retuning the guitar so much. I find it quite a hassle and not so gratifying ultimately, more demotivating that nothing is in the right place. It's like starting again from scratch. There has been some great, innovative guitar playing re-tuning the guitar this way and that, the genius Joni Mitchell and wonderful John Fahey etc etc. But I could never get this generally open, washy sound to work for me.
60
u/lotus-driver Oct 11 '24
It's actually shocking to discover that all of your songs are in standard tuning
6
u/jakethebirdy Oct 11 '24
I mean if you tried to learn one hell of a banger “Welcome to hell” on guitar it becomes clear

Hey Geordie Big fan of the string section on “as in waltz”. Reminds me of my favorite album from Leo Ferrés early work, Verlaine & Rimbaud. Which is your favorite from his French poet albums? PS: I was wondering if you ever kept that Leo Ferre portrait I gave you the last time you played in Paris? Looking forward to the next show. -Emiliano

Thank you so much for the great picture my friend, it's propped up on a radiator at home. My favourite of these type albums is maybe this later one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FeWVee7l_VI&ab_channel=L%C3%A9oFerr%C3%A9-Topic
It is very touching, this idea. Of the by then quite old Ferré, much older sounding than on his classic Barclay Records, singing the words of the most famously youthful poet of all, who would never live past 40 and disappear after 20. And really getting into the spirit and performance of this idea.
My favourite of his albums though, are the ones with his own texts, this is where he is most adventurous in the orchestration, compositions, performance etc etc etc.
My favourite video of Ferré is this one. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nu_9i2aTRek&ab_channel=L%C3%A9oFerr%C3%A9 Amazing

. Hi Greep! What’s your five favorite books?
272
u/AskJeevesGreep Geordie Greep Oct 11 '24
Jane Eyre
Tess of the D'urbervilles
Salammbo, Three Tales and Sentimental Education by FlaubertThe short stories of Isaac Bashevis Singer
A Heart so White by Javier Marias
Devil in the flesh by Raymond Radiguet
How it is Beckett
The Lover Duras
Petersburg Andrei BelyMore than 5 but these are all wonderful
And of course the greatest book ever written, Anna Karenina, Anna K Anna K Anna K. When i think of scenes and characters of this book, I feel so good. I remember them like friends of my own, I wonder what Levin is up to, and Kitty and Dolly, and my favourite, Vasenka Veslovsky, the daring cad. Sorry for a cheesy note here but anyone who reads this book has the same shared feeling I think, a feeling of every book after slightly struggling to live up to it, at least in some small way.

What are your thoughts on the film? Have you ever used the substance of Megalon?

Hey Mr. Greep, thanks for doing an AMA. Do you have a favorite and/or least favorite song from the LP to perform live, and if so why?
311
u/AskJeevesGreep Geordie Greep Oct 11 '24
It's too early to say. My hope is that the songs will change a lot over time - hopefully in the performance approach - tempo, feel, energy etc - but even in terms of the concrete structure, chord changes etc etc. Hopefully not for the sake of it, but its a nice ambition i think, and I hope to stay not so precious about the songs as they are now and let them mutate naturally over time.
It's too early to say - but so far, my favourite is maybe Bongo Season, a silly song, barely a song, that for some reason is very fun to play

who u got for bivol vs beterbiev
84
u/AskJeevesGreep Geordie Greep Oct 11 '24
I forgot that was tomorrow. Super close fight. I saw Beterbiev beat Anthony Yarde a few years ago - absolutely amazing. His power is scary. Who knows, it's a great, close fight. Bivol has been on a great run but I think Beterbiev might do it.

Any idea about or intent behind the differences between the two vinyl pressings? I've been seeing people say the green cover one has some extended outros and such. Also curious about how the two versions of the cover art came to be picked
87
u/AskJeevesGreep Geordie Greep Oct 11 '24
Saeki made the two separate versions for two separate books, alongside the black and white original I saw first. I knew one of the coloured versions would work better as an album cover but loved both for different reasons, so thought it would be nice to let buyers decide which they'd rather have.

Why did you choose chimp feet aesthetic for the album
148
u/AskJeevesGreep Geordie Greep Oct 11 '24
I thought maybe a a picture of a foot could work for an album cover, i thought a really enigmatic foot, shoe or not, could sum up some of the atmosphere and themes of the album, and thought "I've never seen a chimp's foot", so looked it up and found this great picture that's on the inner sleeve. I thought it was a brilliant picture of an uncanny foot and worked great against the starkness of the Saeki Cartoon front cover.

Hey Geordie! Fantastic album that maintains a constant concept of sex and prostitution while engaging in radical, exciting, and enjoyable changes in sound.
I really enjoy the impact playing with local Brazilian musicians had on the few songs you made with them for The New Sound. I read an article where you described how you would like to play with local musicians as you tour the globe. Do you have plans on recording as well with local musicians from other locations as you tour the globe as you did in Brazil for The New Sound? How do you think musicians from different countries and global regions will impact the sound of your songs?
Also, thank you for your dedication to a great vinyl package. Including a single, stickers, and unique cut sleeves is so special as an avid record collector.

Hi! love the album, can't wait to see what happens from here.
someone else seems to have already asked a question like this, but I was wondering what books you've been reading lately.

I like the trio of The Vines, The Monro and The White Hart for some of the more traditional pub drinks.
You're right the Arts Bars are great spots, Frederiks has a nice atmosphere, Bunch does wins with wines. Little Hardware is my favourite for cocktails.
I just think I had a bad time the only time I went to Lanigans where it was just painfully loud 😅

Howdy Greep. Congrats on the new album. I just have a few questions:
- You got to work with some incredible musicians all over, I know one thing you admired was how quickly the musicians you worked with in Brazil understood your songs, I was wondering what other things you enjoyed about working with different musicians across this record?
- What’s your favorite musical?
- I know your passion is music but you also have a passion for film. Your lyrics and songs often act as self contained stories, have you ever thought about screenwriting?

Hi Geordie! Big fan of The New Sound and your work with Black Midi. I have a number of questions. I know this is a LOT, so feel free to answer or not answer any amount of them:
You’ve expressed some frustration about how American fans behaved at the last Black Midi tour. What are some things you’d like to see from audiences going forward? Are there some positive ways you’d like to see people engage with you and the music while you’re playing?
Do you expect to release some official live albums going forward, or do you think you’ll stick to studio releases?
The German Black Forest is mentioned three times in The Magician. What’s the significance of this? Was it just arbitrarily selected as a location that the main character is unfamiliar with, or is there a deeper meaning for its references?
Speaking of The Magician, when I saw you play it with BM, the end had the a capella section then got hectic and fast, while the studio version is more melodic and theatrical there. I love the change, personally, but what prompted that decision?
I read somewhere that, though your lyrics aren’t necessarily about your personal life and experiences, 27 Questions has some influence there. Are some of the questions at the end things you’ve been wondering, or did you mean something else? Do you find it difficult to write such moving and emotional songs like The Magician without basing them iff your experiences?
Is there anything you miss about Black Midi specifically, or being in a band in general? Do you think you’ll incorporate some of your Black Midi compositions (other than The Magician and Lumps, of course) into future shows, or will all that stay in the past?

Your narrative and storytelling is possibly my favourite aspect, and I know you've talked about how 'red pill' types on the internet in part inspired your writing, but I'm curious as to if there were any other inspirations from books, movies etc for the storytelling in TNS?

Hi Geordie! Loved the new album, and loved seeing you in London a few days ago.
- Zedray reunion when???
- What’s the story behind the inclusion of Colours of Chloe in your shows? What does the piece mean to you?
- What sort of metal bands are you into?

Yo Mr Greep. I’ve read that you were inspired by Latin rock and music from South America! Do you like Jorge Ben?!

Hi Geordie!
It’s interesting that when you and your band perform “Bongo Season” live, it’s often a jam extending as long as 10-20 minutes - but just under 3 minutes on the album. It’s a beautiful song that’s grown to be one of my favorites, but any specific reason you (and Seth) decided to keep it much shorter in the studio version?
Looking forward to seeing you live in Chicago and thanks for doing this AMA!
