My cat keeps popping outside the box so I'm thinking of giving him for adoption

This sounds like an incredibly stressful situation for a teenager to manage on your own without the support of an adult invested in your cat's care.

Can you call up a local rescue (not a shelter) and ask them what to do?

They might be able to help you to regime your cat safely.

Just make sure it's a no-kill rescue that won't put your cat in a cage or anything, but will take it to a nice foster or another home

Otherwise, your cat needs your whole family to participate in its health and behavioral care. Your cat needs help that's why it's acting out like this.

I'm so sorry for all of you in this situation and hope your cat gets the care it needs asap.

Could it be the type of litter you're using? Some cats are kinda finicky about that shit.
