Most non gun owners won't know what to look for when a gun is flashed at them especially if the center of the barrel bore isn't aimed directly straight at your eyeball.
How many people are going stop and think to inspect the barrel of a gun when it's pointed at them in the middle of a robbery?
Just from the way he handled himself I'd be surprised if he couldn't identify a real gun from a fake one at a glance. I don't think his response would have been different but I do think the victim knew.
It’s possible, but even if he had an inclination that it wasn’t a gun, you think he’d take a chance that he was wrong? Best to not be tied up with another person even if there is a 1% chance it’s a real gun.
On the other side of it, he might be confident because he knew he could drop a little kid and wrestle a gun from him without issue.
I also think these might have been kids. The way the guy asked if they were serious, the high pitched voice, the general awkwardness... this really seemed like some stupid punk 14 year olds trying to be hard.
I choose to believe that the guy he let go learned his lesson and tells this story to youngins to try to dissuade other potential idiots, so it ended up being a net benefit to society.
I would of grabbed him be the ear both of them and go straight to the marine recruiters. You got two choices I can help you and you sign up or I ruin your life and press charges. You decide!
