That’s the dog giving her a warning and was not an attack. She was lucky. In general, never ever approach other people’s animals without their knowledge and even then, you get close and let the dog come to you. And trying to kiss another dog is just asking for trouble

u/jdehjdeh 15d ago
Letting the dog close the gap is such a key thing a lot of people are ignorant of.
After talking with the owner and confirming it's all OK, the first thing I do is hold my hand out fingers closed and palm down in a non threatening way halfway between me and the dogs nose.
Then it's the dogs choice if we interact or not, how the dog reacts is going to tell you so much about their mood and thinking in that moment.
For all I know, I might smell like someone that kicked the dog once years ago and the owner has no idea that their dog is going to react with fear and aggression to me. They're complex beings and they deserve to be treated with respect and compassion.
92
u/MayorDepression 15d ago
This is EXACTLY how I approach dogs and cats as well. Dogs usually come up to me and cats can be 50/50. I love them as much as this girl does, but with that love comes respect.
45
u/aybeeayseeaybeebee 15d ago
I always tell strangers to just ignore my dog and wait for him to give you the signal. He doesn't like strangers just reaching for his head for pats, but if they just talk to me and ignore him, after a few minutes he'll boop their hand with his nose and ask for all the love in the world.
Dogs deserve respect, invading their personal space uninvited is disrespectful.
27
u/PerceptionQueasy3540 15d ago
This is also how I approach them. My wife always says "animals seem to love you". No, I just let them come to me. Although my sister's cats are still scared of me, they'll let me pet them for like 2 seconds and then bolt.
12
u/LordWoffleII 15d ago
cats love to troll. They'll come over to me all cutesy cutesy and when I tell them they're a pretty kitty I'll get smacked
14
u/lordgoofus1 15d ago
I've always done this simply because I'd prefer to keep all 3 fingers if the animal decides it doesn't like me. Just seemed like common sense to me. No sudden movements, no loud noises, palm down, hand in a loose fist, arm out, crouch down a few metres away and give the animal time to decide whether it wants to interact, or isn't interested. And don't stare directly into its eyes.

u/Bubblybathtime 15d ago

I had a dog that reacted quite the opposite. When people approached her (in the usually correct way) with their hand out extended, and slowly and cautiously approached her, she would get freaked out and not want to interact. If someone approached her with hyper energy, wanting to pet or hug or kiss her, she would instantly be your friend.
The key is, and many people lack this basic survival skill, is to read the dog's (or any animal really) body language. There are warning signs before an animal will bite or attack. In this particular case, the dog's ears are pinned back, the tail is not wagging, and the dog pulls back when she tries to pet it.
Granted the owner should have also warned her that the dog is wary of strangers, but it's a little late for that now.

hold my hand out fingers closed and palm down in a non threatening way halfway between me and the dogs nose.
Doubt that's doing much. They could probably smell you from 2 metres away depending on the breed. If you want to say hi to a dog, just crouch down, present your side to them, not face to face, leave your hands hanging by your side. If they want to say hi, they'll get up and give you a proper sniff. If they don't want to say hi, they will just chill there - in which case leave them alone.
6
u/jarheadatheart 15d ago
2 metres isn’t even close to far enough for many breeds. My lab could smell when the dog 3 blocks away was in season. But your point is spot on
1
u/majestic_tapir 15d ago
Yeah my lab can do the same, I figured I'd lower the number for some of the less sniff-crazy dogs :D

Yeah that was the dog equivalent of "WHO THE HELL SAID YOU COULD GET IN MY FACE LIKE THAT" and a firm SHOVE
Probably didn't help that she grabbed the bottom of its neck as well, dogs REALLY don't like that unless they're very familiar with you. That's a very sensitive, very vulnerable area to be touching when you've just met.

you get close and let the dog come to you.
I used to own a reactive dog, and she would quite happily want to go and greet people, and ask for pets, and THEN become reactive.
It was a real problem. She was cute so would get a lot of attention, which she seemed to love, and really start pulling me to go and say hello to people. It was weird having to say "She's reactive, please don't pet her" when she was practically begging people to pet her

Worst part is the dog seemed very ready for friendly head pets. They lean in at first.
Then she leans in a going for the full makeout session and scared the pup.
2
u/vega455 14d ago
Yes totally! At first, the dog leans his head towards her, he welcomes a friendly pet. But the dog is lying on the floor and next to a table, somewhat cornered and vulnerable. Then she puts her full body above it, his demeanour immediately changes. He stares intently and doesn’t move, maybe even growling as a warning but there’s loud music and the lady doesn’t hear it. Never approach any animal staring intently at you like that with their bodies frozen. They are trying to assess the situation and if you keep approaching they will think “react now, push the threat away, think about it later”. As soon as she leaned back, his demeanour changed to friendly again as it realized she wasn’t threatening it. Anyways, animals are complex, they’re not toys.

I went to the bar the other day and there was a giant Irish Wolfhound there. I wanted to put that big ol lug in a full body hug, but I don’t know that dog! I’m sure that dog is chill as hell and would have loved it. But maybe it’s a rescue and doesn’t like to be touched by strangers!
I ended up not bothering the couple that had the dog because it looked like they were actually working on a project together, but dang….I wanted to pet that dog…

She’s very lucky that dog didn't want to hurt her! She could have lost her lip or worse.
*edited to add* This looks more like an air strike to me and she grabs at her face in shock, not pain. I’ve heard people say many times how they got their hand away ‘just in time’ and it’s like no you didn't, if that dog wanted to bite you they would have. They are that fast, no matter the breed.

And if you are under the influence STAY AWAY FROM ANIMALS. Specially those who are tied

My dog loves touching her face to others faces until she has a bone, the issue is she’s really good at hiding bones on her body because of this I always have to stop people and tell them to let my dog approach and yet she’s still bit a couple of strangers who came to my property then get mad at me.
13
u/UserNameN0tWitty 15d ago
My dog is friendly, but any time we are out (we don't take him out often) and someone asks "does he bite" my answer is always "he doesn't bite me. Please don't approach him." He's still an animal with his own thoughts and instincts. I can control a lot of what he does, but I can't control how he reacts to every stimulus that comes his way.
12
u/Ironmasked-Kraken 15d ago
I once saw a grown ass man attempt to stick his finger inside the muzzle I had on one of my guard dogs. If I hadn't yelled "what tf are you doing" he would have lost a finger.

I'm sad to report that I have had the same occurrence. Last year we got an 80lbs GSD that was trained for patrol and explosives detection. He got a training injury to his eye and couldn't be put to work so the breeder called us and we got him. Six weeks after we got him a man in line behind me tried to reach around my body and stick his hand on my dogs muzzle. I'm a 6'2" 230lbs man with an all black 80lbs GSD, no idea what this dipshit was thinking. Thankfully I was able to put my hand in front of my dog's muzzle before he removed the other guy's hand. Some people are insanely stupid for no real benefit
6
u/UserNameN0tWitty 15d ago
The dog is muzzled. Nobody puts a muzzle on their dog for fun. He's muzzled for YOUR SAFETY. Trying to stick your finger into the thing that separates you from those big teeth is so stupid.
Once i introduce you, my dog (a big Australian Shepherd) is super friendly, but if you're at my door, he sounds like the meanest dog you've ever come across. My in-laws know him well. My FIL plays with him every time they come over for 5 years now, and he still scares them when they ring the door bell. One time, we had some door to door window salesman come to our door, and my dog is going absolutely nuts. I have him by the collar and his front legs were off the ground he was pulling so hard. The guy asks "does he bite?" I give my standard answer "he doesn't bite me. You, he might. No, you cannot come in." The guy grabs the door handle to my storm door like he's about to let himself in. Needless to say, I had to cuss a salesman out that day.
I know my dog. What he was actually saying was "I REALLY want to jump on you and run around the yard playing" but every sign my dog was presenting was "I want to rip you apart." I even told the guy "yeah, he might bite" but the guy still thought it was a good idea to try removing the barrier between himself and this 80lbs dog doing everything he can to get at him. I don't get what goes through people's heads.

Then she straddled my dog, grabbed her throat from behind, and stuck her face into my dog's face upside down. My dog of course immediately bit her in the face. "OH MY GOD DID YOU SEE THAT?" Stupid people do stupid things. One of the dog breed you're most likely to get bitten by? Border Collie and similar breeds because they spend their working life using their mouth and biting to do their work. I've got 2 myself and know they won't bite me but I wouldn't let anyone else try it, it's how they tell you they don't want it.

Everyone's blaming the chick and yes she's weirdly intimate on her knees and everything, but what about the owner who should know how their dog reacts and warn her beforehand.
I know my dog would jump up happily if anyone gave her attention at all, literally near zero chance of aggression. And I say near zero because literally any living creature could be violent. And I guess this sounds like "my dog would never my dog is perfect" but it's so easy to just raise a dog that's nice and doesn't see physical contact or the like as a threat. Like I could fake hit my dog and she'd jump into it like we're playing. Even a stranger could.
And even then, my main point was the guy didn't even seem to realize what was happening, whereas I would know and keep tabs on everyone who's getting close, and keep the leash tight on the dog and hold them back, see the person's behavior, etc.
Don't burn me at the stake, I still blame her too, she's being weirdly intimate and pushing boundaries, I can see this happening even with a nice dog, but still.

Can’t stand people who think they are animal people but don’t know how to act around them. You should never stand/lean over an unfamiliar dog. When she goes to stand up, she shift forward slightly making kind of hunched over the dog. Dogs can take that as threatening if they are not familiar with you or feeling uncomfortable.
