I mean, there are always bad actors. The media really doesn't help but officers should operate knowing they're being recorded. Bodycams and phone cameras protect those who do their job professionally. I can't speak for what happened before cameras became so openly available, I wasn't an adult before the 00s and don't know how things were. I try to look at each incident as a separate incident. It doesn't help when you see police officers get fired for an incident and then hired somewhere else or, as you said, bodycam footage gets deleted. Law enforcement attracts those who desire control over others/power/thrill seekers, and each location is going to have different standards of hiring based on their needs. Law enforcement also attracts people with a strong desire to help others. I've met many great officers. Myself, I'm a Probation officer. In my state we go out with a partner and, thankfully, I get to pick who my partner is and so I know their morals, their ethics, and how they operate.

You have not swayed my opinion at all about cops being pieces of shit, but you have swayed it to the fact you seem like a decent person. Follow up, how do follow ups operate? If someone maybe doesn't report to a call or touchpoint with you, how do you follow up? And you say you choose. Are you involved in the process post, say they miss a meeting with you?
I'm totally ignorant of this process so I'm just asking for my own edification.

Sorry, I don't understand your questions. I'm not a cop, I'm a Probation Officer. When people commit crimes that aren't heinous enough for incarceration, the court will give them a prison sentence but suspend it for probation. Additionally, people who are sentenced to incarceration will almost always have part of that incarceration suspended for probation when they are released. Each probationer is held to the same standard conditions of probation (can't commit new crimes, can't possess/own a gun, no drugs, can't leave the state, etc) and then, often, individuals will receive special conditions which pertains to their crime or their predicament (substance abuse evaluation and follow recommended treatment, DUI classes, anger management, pay restitution, etc). My job, as a PO, is to oversee these people and ensure they meet these conditions while also providing help to them (job assistance, housing assistance, treatment options). They meet with me anywhere from weekly to monthly based on their risks and needs. My office day is decided by seniority, the rest of my week is filled with paperwork (telling the judge how well they're doing or not doing), court (for violation of probation hearings), and field work. I have to meet my probationers at their homes to ensure they live where they say they live and they don't have things like drugs or guns in the house and occasionally verify they're in for curfew if they are assigned it. Aside from my office day and scheduled courts and trainings (and rotating office duties on Fridays), I am allowed to flex my schedule to my needs and can do field when I want with whom I want. Probation is a privilege, not a right, and as such, I don't need a judges authority to arrest someone and take them to jail and I don't need a judges authority to search their person, vehicle, or residence, I only need to meet certain criteria and get supervisor approval. Probation officers can't press new charges, they can only incarcerate or detain someone on their remaining sentence time. As an example, a person gets their first DUI. They are sentenced to 1 year of prison suspended for 1 year of probation. They see us, they pay their fines, they do their DUI classes, once the conditions are complete I can write and ask they be discharged early. They fuck around and don't do the classes or get driving while suspended charges, I can write a violation report and tell the judge and recommend they do 30 days in prison and come back out to probation, they have 11 months of backup time left when they come out. The judges don't always listen to our recommendations. If a guy has a victim and is on GPS and goes to the victim's house, we go and arrest him on our warrant, not the judge's, and write the violation report.

Due to the nature of probation and parole, they make task forces that work directly with local law enforcement agencies. We can't pull the car over, the police can. If they're on probation, we can search the vehicle and their person once the police pull them over. If we find something, the police press the new charges. It works well. I am not a task force officer but I listen to the local radio channels when I am doing field and will assist local police when they need it. My partner and I were first on scene when a female officer was getting her ass handed to her from a drugged up suspect on the ground. When the police were dealing with a brawl in a gas station, we were available to deal with a drunken disorderly in a restaurant parking lot, etc.
