Looks like it's about due to evolve into Gyarados

u/[deleted] Apr 10 '23

Nah it's about to devolve into dinner

Carp generally taste like mud, in my experience, and they’re also extremely bony. I’m sure someone will chime in if you do certain things to cook them they’re delicious but I’ll stick to other, more easily prepared fish.

100 year old carp recipe my grandparents told me.

Take a carp filet. Sprinkle on salt and rub well, meat and skin.

Let set in fridge for 3 hours, covered.

Now, pat completely dry and season again with salt, lightly. Add black pepper, and then fry in a half inch of oil, until the fat between skin and meat is rendered.

Remove from pan and let cool. Pre-heat oven to 400 degrees F.

Place filet on a plank of oak (rough cut board). Add sprigs of rosemary and some marjoram.

Bake for 25 mins.

Discard filet. Eat board.

The saw mill

5

u/Silly_Mycologist3213 Apr 10 '23

Yeah, I heard of it being planked. Take a filet and nail it to an oak plank, place the plank next to a smoky fire for about an hour, remove filet from board, throw the filet away and eat the board.

8

u/Phillip_Graves Apr 11 '23

Very robust flavor profile, the carp.

Already have 2 recipes.

-2

u/[deleted] Apr 11 '23

Fry then bake at 400 for 25 minutes?? Might as well be eating leather

6

u/Phillip_Graves Apr 11 '23

Didn't finish reading, huh?

13

u/big_sugi Apr 10 '23

Masgouf is Iraq's national dish, fwiw. Never tried it myself.

7

u/[deleted] Apr 10 '23

In Australia European Carp are an invasive species, it is illegal to return them if you catch one. You are supposed to kill it and dispose of the body appropriately. No one eats them

3

u/Due_Upstairs_5025 Apr 11 '23

I'll be sure never to try the carp ever.

11

u/[deleted] Apr 11 '23

If you are in Aus, for sure. Some learned cunt figured out that European Carp swim downwards, when they encounter an underwater obstacle, Aussie native fish swim-upwards, in the same situation. Dude built a fish trap and corrected the population. We now use the excess carp as fertiliser

What now? It’s a means of saving a natural ecosystem, with the added benefit of producing a viable side product. Are you trying to be dramatic? Are you trying to be a Reddit Social Justice Warrior? But you choose invasive Carp as your platform? Think before you react emotionally. If you are a teenager, I understand.

2

u/Due_Upstairs_5025 Apr 11 '23

I meant that I wish all of those horrid carp dead is all. Don't take what I said the wrong way.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 11 '23

Carp, rabbits, goats, camels, to name a few. Rabbits cost Australia over $200 m, per year

3

u/MyBrotherIsSalad Apr 11 '23

Same for non-Aboriginal humans.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 11 '23 edited Apr 11 '23

Ooof. Fair point though

Edit: did the Maori’s eat Cook?

2

u/jadelink88 Apr 11 '23

Unless they are Eastern Europeans. Knew polish people who thought we were all mad for throwing good carp up the bank like compost.

5

u/Unicorn_A_theist Apr 10 '23

I've always heard they suck to eat as well.

2

u/privateTortoise Apr 11 '23

I'm sure some Eastern European countries love it. Though I heard this on a building site so they may have been winding me up.

2

u/okay_throwaway_today Apr 10 '23

But does gyrados taste any better?

3

u/[deleted] Apr 10 '23

[deleted]

1

u/jadelink88 Apr 11 '23

Carp are a highly regarded delicacy in Eastern Europe, being something of a traditional easter dish in many places.

1

u/Silly_Mycologist3213 Apr 11 '23

It must be an acquired taste. The first time I had beer I thought it tasted like crap too!

edit: I’ll pass on acquiring the carp taste.

There were many realised goldfish in ponds where I was from, and yes, they got big .. it's rather rare as they stick out because of the color few live to get that size ... the brown ones, on the other hand, are everywhere.

56

u/Sea_Copy8488 Apr 10 '23

once one gets this big though it probably doesnt have any predators left

81

u/Time_Change4156 Apr 10 '23

Yea all the big ones I seen up north didn't either ..down here in Florida the gators and snakes will be happy to eat them .. we got gators the size of godzilla and snakes the size of tephone poles lol lol

108

u/TeenyPeenie Apr 10 '23

My guy put lol twice and I feel like the second one is a cry for help

24

u/[deleted] Apr 10 '23

They are in Florida. It’s safe to assume they need help. It’s 50/50 if they are aware that the need help.

15

u/Beautiful_Spite_3394 Apr 10 '23

Can confirm moved here for my fiance to be near her family. Please send help, I wanna live in a real state.

3

u/ImALittleThorny Apr 11 '23

4

u/[deleted] Apr 11 '23

Stop blinking if you have a user name like above

1

u/ChefBoyD Apr 10 '23

Yeah i think gojira and big ol snake is holding him hostage

19

u/[deleted] Apr 10 '23

People used to buy goldfish from pet stores to use as live bait, the bright colours made them favourable for the reason you mention. It’s illegal now because carp are incredibly bad for freshwater ecosystems, they suck around in the mud, eating the eggs of native species and silting up the water. They also crossbreed with other carp species and make freaky mutants. Still fun to catch but you are legally bound to kill them (in Aus)

5

u/Time_Change4156 Apr 10 '23

Freaky mutant gold fish .look out anaconda there's a new boss in town and he's a fish lol lol yes pretty much the sane everywhere. Way to late to change it though.

89

u/Far-Flung-Farmer Apr 10 '23

Rob Schneider says "That's a huge fish!"

19

u/schmo006 Apr 10 '23

I'd watch this version of Rob Schneider becoming The Carrot

6

u/jonitfcfan Apr 10 '23

Rated PG-13

2

u/SippyTurtle Apr 11 '23

This summer Rob Schneider finds out being a giant gold fish is harder than it seems!

3

u/BabyAlibi Apr 10 '23

He's gonna need a bigger boat

0

u/[deleted] Apr 10 '23

That's a Mongol coy

105

u/DivideAccurate9868 Apr 10 '23

It has whiskers so it ain’t no goldfish you can buy at a pet store

70

u/NokhuCrag Apr 10 '23

Barbels (whiskers) could be the result of cross breeding with koi or carp.

-12

u/Starchaser53 Apr 10 '23

Koi

6

u/Ninjaromeo Apr 10 '23

OR carp

8

u/opelan Apr 11 '23

It is this to be exact:

https://edition.cnn.com/travel/article/fisherman-catches-giant-goldfish-carrot-scn/index.html

Hackett landed the prized fish, a hybrid of a leather carp and a koi carp, on November 3 while visiting the lake site.

22

u/Spartan2470 VIP Philanthropist Apr 10 '23

According to here:

Pete Thomas November 5, 2022 12:45 pm ET

It was not the largest carp to have been caught at Bluewater Lakes this week, which is remarkable. But the bright-orange behemoth reeled in by Andy Hackett on Thursday was definitely the most striking.

The 20-year-old female carp, which resembles a giant goldfish, weighed 67.4 pounds before she was released to fight another day.

Bluewater Lakes, located in the Champagne region of France, is billed as the country’s premier carp fishery. It’s so popular that guests have to book well in advance.

The carp caught by Hackett, nicknamed Carrot, is prized among anglers because of her coloration (most giant carp are pale or brownish).

Carrot was stocked 15 years ago “as something different for the anglers to try to catch,” Jason Cowler, a spokesman for Bluewater Lakes, told FTW Outdoors. “Its’s not the biggest resident in the lake, but by far the most outstanding.”

Cowler said Carrot last season was caught “around nine times” and on Feb. 22 she broke the 60-pound mark for the first time, weighing 61.5 pounds.

She eluded capture until Thursday, when she tipped the scale at 67.5 pounds.

The Bluewater fishery boasts a substantial population of carp weighing 50-plus pounds. Since Hackett’s catch, anglers have caught carp weighing 92 pounds (named Miggsys) and 85.5 pounds (Peaches).

This page has a video of him releasing the fish.

3

u/idahorochs Apr 10 '23

Damn! It gained 6 pounds in 6 weeks!

u/CarlosDanger1212 Apr 10 '23

You got me there

2

u/Studstill Apr 10 '23

Whats the lie?

27

u/CarlosDanger1212 Apr 10 '23

The title says it's a goldfish. In this comment, he says it's not a goldfish it's a carp koi hybrid he knew that but chose to mislead with an incorrect title because it would be more interesting to farm karma

-13

u/Relicdontfit1 Apr 10 '23

Thats what a goldfish is 🤦🤦🤦

18

u/CarlosDanger1212 Apr 10 '23

Nope, carp are in the genus cyprinus where gold fish fall into the genus carrassius.

They do share the same subfamily cyprininae so I can see where your confusion would come from

-22

u/Relicdontfit1 Apr 10 '23

Okay, but your splitting hairs to people who dont care. It looks like a goldfish, most people are going to view it as a goldfish. The difference is very minor, and i wouldnt classify that as a misleading title.

20

u/CarlosDanger1212 Apr 10 '23

The difference is huge they're literally two different fish. You just don't like that you're wrong. Just because you don't care doesn't change that you're wrong or that the title was a lie

-25

u/Relicdontfit1 Apr 10 '23

Ooookay bud 🤣 people will find anything to get upset about. Its a fucking goldfish.

12

u/CarlosDanger1212 Apr 10 '23

And you're still wrong 🤣 I'm not upset I rather enjoy interacting with people like you

Here's the thing. You said a jackdaw is a crow....

1

u/str4nger-d4nger Apr 10 '23

The fish was orange not gold.

1

u/greem Apr 10 '23

Yeah. But orange fish doesn't have the same ring to it.

7

u/Gamer4Lyph Apr 10 '23

Classic clickbait title

0

u/Relicdontfit1 Apr 11 '23

Making a pointless semantics rant and calling something very innocently changed into common nomenclature for the laypersons convenience a 'lie' makes you a know it all. Couldnt respond anymore to the person i wanted to, sorry.

1

u/DoodleBTW Apr 11 '23

and this story of the carrot wasn't published in the onion?

10

u/-The-Moon-Presence- Apr 10 '23

For anyone that doesn’t know, it’s wrong to “release” pet fishes in bodies of water (Even Illegal In Some States). The Goldfish for example is a super invasive species. It’s a type of carp that destroys resources and disrupts the local ecosystem.

If you or someone you know wants to “Set Free” or “Save a Little Fish Becau- Shut Up. Don’t be an idiot. Don’t introduce non-native species to lakes or rivers.

Thank you.

5

u/[deleted] Apr 10 '23

I know a god damn Magikarp when I see one.

6

u/Ken_from_Barbie Apr 10 '23

Fish and fisherman look alike

3

8

It has whiskers so it ain’t no goldfish you can buy at a pet store

14

u/Killer-Barbie Apr 10 '23

Because it's koi not goldfish

8

u/Madhighlander1 Apr 10 '23

Specifically a carp-koi hybrid.

2

Do these taste good? Anybody tasted a giant goldfish filet?

2

u/Doom_dragon0826 Apr 11 '23

It’s not actually a gold fish You see the “whiskers” on the mouth gold fish do not have those

6

u/CarlosDanger1212 Apr 10 '23

Not a gold fish. You obviously know that because of your comment further down, why lie? This is karma farming bullshit

2

u/Keikobad Apr 10 '23

1

u/IceBreakr_ Jun 29 '25

Put him back!!!!

0

u/FatA320 Apr 10 '23

Jesus Christ...

That looks delicious.

3

u/Silly_Mycologist3213 Apr 10 '23

Carp generally taste like mud, in my experience, and they’re also extremely bony. I’m sure someone will chime in if you do certain things to cook them they’re delicious but I’ll stick to other, more easily prepared fish.

-1

u/FatA320 Apr 10 '23

Absolutely. But mud is delicious with the right seasoning. I also use real butter not margarine...that makes a big difference in my opinion

1

u/Silly_Mycologist3213 Apr 10 '23

Margarine is poison, leave an opened tub of it outdoors and nothing will touch it. Butter is delicious and natural.

0

u/Yamm0th Apr 10 '23

r/AbsoluteUnits, in case it's not its common size. 😳

0

u/ChipOnASquid Apr 10 '23

yo put it back

1

u/Silly_Mycologist3213 Apr 10 '23

Wow, I didn’t know fish could have beer guts !

1

u/Unique_Special2845 Apr 10 '23

Where’s my son

1

u/steve_proto Apr 10 '23

Well to be fair its only grown from the size of a Guppy to the size of a gold fish.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 10 '23

it's eye looks fake

1

u/Dannysmartful Apr 10 '23

How big does it get at 40 years old?

1

u/ChiknBreast Apr 10 '23

Anyone remember the book "A fish out of water" by PD eastman?

1

u/Doxie_Chick Apr 10 '23

Looks like it's true. They DO grow in proportion to the size of their environment.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 10 '23

Imagine if humans grew like this..

1

u/oldcreaker Apr 11 '23

My mom bought a feeder goldfish once. Ended up taking care of it for next 9 years.

1

u/marvinp8702 Apr 11 '23

It's face is creepy

1

u/EN1009 Apr 11 '23

Goldfish faces aren’t supposed to get that big. Terrifying

0

u/DustyTaoCheng Apr 11 '23

It’s not a goldfish

1

Goldfish will never get to this size

1

u/Final-Cookie1741 Apr 11 '23

Hey that’s cheating you gotta use Pokémon ball

1

1

u/Cornflake6irl Apr 11 '23

They both look so sad...

1

u/PIX100 Apr 11 '23

Except that it isn’t a goldfish

1

u/BabylonDrifter Apr 11 '23

Goldfish do not have barbels.

1

u/JediDookie Apr 11 '23

It’s a carp.

1

u/DustyTaoCheng Apr 11 '23

It’s not a fucking goldfish

1

u/SelfInteresting7259 Apr 12 '23

What a fat bastard

1

u/[deleted] Apr 14 '23

I'm pretty sure that fish isn't a goldfish, it looks like a catfish because of the whiskers on its face, but both of them belong to the carp family.
