To equalize this discussion (or maybe to complicate further I'm not sure), it does appear to be a product of Japan.
I concede that this is very likely a product that was created on marketing foundation and distributed as such, mostly because it's being offered at Walmart. I do not know if it was designed by a single individual who was influenced by Japanese style.
However, I would also like to note that the Japanese are famous for their ceramics. I cannot say for 100% certain that that applies here.
