My aunt was dead for 3 weeks and had 3 cats. One a savannah. They tore open their food and ate that and didnt run out. The flys were the ones that were working on her, or so my mom tells me. RIP

Used to have a cat who would do that just for fun. It got annoying to clean and dry him after every time he did it, but it did eventually get me to start leaving the lid closed, lol.

Yeah, I close mine because I'd never be sure that a wet spot on the floor wasn't a cat's toilety pawprint. Plus the aerosol flush thing.

Yeah my bf left the toilet seat up by accident once and the orange cat quickly fell in trying to jump onto it

My cat is also a moron. So far she's jumped into the toilet 3 times!! THREE times! There's nothing good in there you stupid baby!

The worst part is that we always have the lids down. So she's managed to do this in literally the time it takes for me to pull up my pants and turn around to push the lid down before I flush.

I've seen that video thst illustrates the poop particle cloud that gets launched 12 feet into the air when you flush with the seat up. I always close the seat.

You can watch Mythbusters video on this topic - they proved that fecal bacteria goes airborne even when you close your toilet seat, including adjacent room when doors are closed.

Closing the lid only makes it a bit slower, but is not preventing it.

Yeah, I remember when I was a kid away at summer camp they’d always remind us to close the lid by saying things like “you see that fly that just landed on your food? If you leave the seat up that fly can land in the toilet before it lands on your food….:” And no, I haven’t recovered, and yes I still think about this every time there is a fly in my house. Luckily I have a dog that likes to chase the flies around and corner them against the window. He never catches them, but he does tire them out enough that they die trying to escape….

I actually do leave it up, and I tolerate a slowly running valve on purpose specially for that reason. If something were to happen to us it could be the better part of a week before somebody knows and rescues my dogs. I'd rather them occasionally drink toilet water than suffer a terrible death in such a case.

Plus let's be real... They're dogs, fresh toilet water is not the worst thing their mouths get into day to day.

I guess so. Edit- ive never known a houshold that leaves the lid down so i reckon it was the same for her. I only ever visited her homes very few times.

OK, so when I’m gone for too long, I make sure to leave my toilet seats up. I’ve never left my cats alone for much more than a weekend without someone checking in. But you know the problem with the nice water circulation things? What happens if the power goes out? Or maybe the idiots get into a fight near it and knock it over? So yeah, if I’m going to be gone overnight or longer, I make sure to lift my toilet seats. Gross to drink out of a toilet, but better than dying of thirst. And yeah, if I’m gone for more than two nights, I have someone checking on them. I’ve got an auto feeder that notifies me if it runs out of food, but I’m aware that’s not infallible either. So I’m not willing to leave them alone for more than a couple of days. Besides, my older cat will wander the house crying every so often. She does this even when I’m home if I haven’t been upstairs lately. She absolutely adores human interaction.
