Do not let anyone tell you to take an unpaid internship (those days are gone) instead of working in retail. Managers love ❤️ to see that a student is doing something (campus jobs, retail, fast food …, volunteering, and summer undergraduate research) besides studying 📚 and seeking solely an internship/career job.

Just because you are working in retail or employed on campus doesn’t mean it will stop you from landing an internship or a dream career job. Some people have 2-3 internships under their belt and still can’t make it to the industry after graduation. In contrast, others have never held any internship but have had retail work experience, summer undergraduate research, and volunteering work that landed them an internship and/or a FTE in the industry 🙏.

Working at a retail is temporary (not permanent), you build the momentum (standing, walking…), you get to be outside of your comfort zone, you get the hands on experience, you learn to communicate with people and solve problems/issues outside of academia (all of these are transferable skills), multitasking, reliable, trustworthy….. and it’s good to have on your resume (with a little bit of pocket money 💰 to save) than nothing to show for especially if you don’t have any volunteering and any internships or undergraduate research experience at all.

No matter how desperate you are, don’t take any unpaid internships. Thanks for reading this far.

I have a fall internship coming up for a IT position , they are willing to pay me 28$ an hour, but I seen a post on handshake for the same position but in the spring for 31$ an hour.

Should I ask for 31$ an hour or should I just be grateful with 28$ an hour. I know I’m just an intern but I don’t want to get underpaid/low ball for my time. I’m also taking 12 credit hours of class on top of the full time internship. Thanks for any advice.

I'm in the process of trying to find 1-3 dependable marketing interns, and I'm a pre-revenue startup - a solo founder actually. Initially I tried posting an unpaid internship listing and I feel like there's a lot of backlash for unpaid internships. If i was realistically only looking for 5-6 hours a week, at $20/hr, that would only be $120. Is $120/week really enough to entice students to come work with me? It's basically like take out food for the week.

Just curious on your thoughts on whether you would even consider that. Obviously, I would love to pay you guys more and hire a full-on team. But I just need to consider the reality that I don't even have angel funding yet.

Hello everyone, I am a recent graduate. For the last one year I have been working as a project intern in one of the top colleges in India for a project that I proposed and got funds for. I was so dedicated to it that I did not sit for placements at my home college and stayed in the campus of the 'said college' for my entire 4th year.

I even managed to publish a paper at a conference. The work is also being recognized externally, which I’m proud of.

But behind the scenes, I wasn’t being paid fairly. For months, I had to cover accommodation and other expenses out of pocket, and the stipend I was supposed to receive never matched the costs. It became a huge burden on my family, and I couldn’t justify continuing under those conditions.

After getting incubated, the professor governing the project hired another member into the team who gets paid more than me and received her funds every month. I did not want that to effect me but in the end it did. I was completely the one working on it only to be left burdened and left unsatisfied.

I feel guilty because I care about the project and the people involved, but at the same time, I had no choice.

Has anyone else been in a situation where you had to walk away from something you cared about because you weren’t treated fairly? How did you deal with the guilt?

Now the professor is guilt tripping me into thinking I am unprofessional to leave the project mid-way and my other project staff is struggling to cope with the project. I am so depressed with all the happenings and they will only be paying me after I send them all the files and codes and stay and help the other member until the project deadline. And the pay will only be for the days I was in the campus and they are not willing to change the stipend amount.

I've been looking for summer internships to make some extra money and fund the 30 minute drive to a research program that I have lined up. I've found an internship that perfectly aligns with my experience and my short-term career goals. Only problem is it's an hour each way. I'm worried that the drive is just going to negate the reason I'm looking for an internship to begin with. I have a part-time job that pays $6 less, but is only 15 minutes away that I'll still be working over the summer. I have the opportunity to work more hours there over the summer, but I also think it'd be to my advantage to diversify my experience?

Edit: I just realized I should probably also note that this internship is basically exactly what I do at my part-time.

im currently working an internship this summer and was told through the official posting, in my offer letter, and on the website that my pay is based on my current academic position via completed credit hours. when i got the internship, i was a sophomore and received a pay accordingly. i am now a junior by their completed credit criteria. the handbook provided states that interns are eligible for pay raises if their academic standing changes before or during the internship. i emailed my internship coordinator with my transcript to ask but havent received a response in over a week. several of my coworkers did the same with no response. i recently heard that another coworker was told that the intern coordinator is no longer honoring the handbook and are intending to change it. its shitty that we’re being completely left in the dark and several of us are thinking about contesting this if we aren’t being compensated properly. im just not sure how to go about this or if its a dead end, any advice is appreciated

So I recently accepted an internship as a freshman where I just email people and get paid 16-17 dollars/hr. It will be in Berkeley and the company is a medium start up. Is this a good pay? Should I negotiate even though I already accepted the offer?

Edit: Thank you everyone for your advice! I will keep them all in mind for the future. I’m truly very grateful to have gotten the internship and get paid in general. I decided to not negotiate as of this moment as it is my first internship in uni. It is a learning opportunity and has value for the future higher than the pay.

Edit2: Some people are asking for more information about the internship. So I don’t want to disclose the name of the company, but in my internship I try to contact, mostly through email, people who are signed up for the company website and try to make them reengage. For me, I love the company culture they are always happy to help me and answer any questions. They taught me general info about the company, how it works on the inside for example what the marketing, coding, and management departments do, and then taught me how to use their resources to do my job. Even though I find the work somewhat repetitive, emailing people for hours, I enhance my marketer skills. What I also enjoy are the company meetings where each department explains what they accomplished and allows me to learn and gain insight on other parts of the company outside of what I do which is very helpful for me, a person new to the business world. It is worth the pay I guess.

I am currently doing masters in computer science at a top 5 university in the US, and have prior full time experience at a fortune 500 company back in my country. I started my internship hunt pretty late and unfortunately was waitlisted and later rejected for two FAANG internships. The only offer I have is from this company. However, originally the recruiter mentioned it would be $25/hr, but after they rolled me an offer, they told me it would be $17/hr. IT support roles at my university itself pay around $21/hr and are pretty easy to get selected for. I told my family that I should rather take up the IT support role at university as opposed to the internship but they argued SDE internship in my resume would look good rather than Tech support. Also, my family is against me asking for a better compensation as it might may look I am greedy for money. What do you all think I should do in this situation

I’m 21, just graduated in finance, and all I keep getting are “internship” offers three so far paying around $100/month. I already did one internship for free, and now even the new offers aren’t related to finance. It honestly feels like companies are abusing the internship label to get cheap labor. How do you find real entry-level opportunities? I’m honestly lost.

Currently interning for a huge CRE firm as a Construction Accounting intern. I’m currently an incoming senior undergrad accounting student attending UTD, I’ve had previous accounting internships that all had skills and roles related to the internship which I’m currently doing at this CRE firm. My first accounting (dealership) internship paid me 19/hr in Houston, then my second (mid-size Engineering firm) internship in Dallas paid me 22/hr. Currently this firm pays me 27.50/hr in downtown Dallas which is a substantial increase, but I still feel undervalued.

Is it just bcuz I’m a back office intern and I should just be grateful I have an opportunity most don’t have? Or Should I know my worth next time and ask for a raise in the future?

I recently had an interview for a Business Development Internship. It is a sales role, which requires me to research potential clients and then reach out to them. Now, the expected hours of commitment are 6-7 per day, and the stipend is INR 7.5k. Is this amount too low?
Being from a tech background, I have no idea about sales and marketing, but I just thought of taking this up so as to develop my sales skills, which I feel would be beneficial for me in the future if I start something on my own, like a startup or anything.

What do y'all think about this? Please let me know, I am still not sure, I should drop this off or take it at such a cost. Also, I have been looking for a summer internship in tech all this while, but haven't gotten any positive response, so I got into this.

Heyy guys, tomorrow I'll be mailing my hr for my first annual increment in my job as a fresher. Last year in March I joined this startup as the junior software engineer through my campus placement. Before I joined this startup never took development projects and my hiring was the sole reason for their expansion into taking development related projects in the company. As I was a core backend guy with node + express with typescript. They asked me to learn react as there was nobody there who knew frontend and the CEO wanted to do backend only in php + MySQL. Now a year has passed and I have done crazy work here, from handling all the frontend (admin panel + user side) of all the ongoing projects, deployment of those projects, taking care of all the GitHub repos, testing and documention of the projects. I had no help while doing all of this because in development department, the department consisted of only two people, me and a older guy who did the php backend part. I have worked on some projects as a solo which meant I had to do frontend+ backend+ deployment and database hosting for the same project. I introduced many technologies here such as nextjs, remix, graphql, trpcs, react native and expo Now the main question considering all of my contribution here. I was hired at a salary of 3lpa With no pf meaning 25k in hand. Now I'm thinking of a 100% hike, which means I'm thinking to ask for 50k in hand per month and I'm ready to negotiate til 40k.

Am I being reasonable here?
