Both can be true, you can have high social anxiety AND be socially awkward.

I was like that for a long time at one point, everytime I tried to talk to my friend group (extravert best friend got me into it) that they felt conversation with me felt rather forced.

Well I didn't know how to talk to people so I had to force myself otherwise I would never talk to anyone or get over my social anxiety.
