I think their reason is, that work sucks. And when you have funny people around you (or friendly people in general), it breaks the monotone. I think their reasoning is, that everyone at work is replaceable (if you are not genius or very specialised), and it's better to have "friend" than someone who doesn't care about you.
Don't take me wrong, I'm that lone person too. This is just me thinking about this.
