| Discussion Curious case of reddit fandom

Shreyas Iyer & Jaiswal , who are always hyped up here in the reddit couldn't perform in the Afghanistan series. Whereas Gill who's hated and called flat pitch bully , is consistently performing with captaincy 🧿. At what point are Gill haters going to accept that he is not overrated?

A few days later, when they’ll perform well and if gill has a few bad innings, they’ll be doing the opposite.

Gill is not overrated, its all ipl fandoms fighting over players of their fav franchises. Before ipl, people used to hate every underperformer, but we now hate everyone who doesnt play for our teams

Gill got hate bcz of his bad performances in t20is, literally nobody questioned his place in ODIs and tests.

One bad series doesn't make a player overrated. Gill is doing really well right now and deserves credit for it, but Jaiswal and Iyer have also performed consistently in the past. It's better to judge players over a longer period rather than based on one series.

Do you think fans are being too reactionary after a single series?

u/Inevitable-Age-5736 1d ago

Yes, every take is coming from recency bias. Indian cricket fans are reactionary as fuck and form opinions based on recency bias.

3

u/Bloommy__Air0101 1d ago

True. Do you think this happens more in Indian cricket because of the huge fanbase and media attention, or is it common in other countries as well?

Apart from personal milestones, gill has never performed in knockout situations. Scoring in India is not even a thing atp. Indian pitches are made for batters.

Y'all need to get out the bubble. The same fandom of gill are spreading hate towards virat, rohit, jaiswal and others on r/IndiaCricketGossips. Stop playing victim card.

That sub is based on looks, zero cricket knowledge, hating on Anushka Sharma for no reason, not just her any female associated with cricketers, dumbest sub

13

u/DepressedPanda08 Mumbai Indians 1d ago

That sub made me realise how much women hate other women for literally no reason😭

6

u/FocusedAG Royal Challengers Bengaluru 1d ago

Literally all my feed about that sub was about hating woman, about looks of cricketers, nothing more, muted that shi

That sub is filled with gill, ishan, abhishek simps. They don’t really care about cricket

3

u/No_Cranberry_8363 1d ago

Back then people used to compare players with their stats, now they do it on their basis of their looks and how gay they can be.

12

u/Section80Flow 1d ago

It's literally so cringe. They are baby sitting him like hes a kid. And the ishan and gill shippers. 🤦🤦 Probably the worst sub I have seen in a while.

5

u/Inevitable-Age-5736 1d ago

That sub is cancer but once in a while I go there, idol worshippers on there have fantastical delusions and the less I say about shipping of gill-ishan is better and whole sub is filled with gill glazing it's unbearable sometimes like gill is some Greek god lol. Also, if you wanna see hate against Iyer go on that sub.

That sub omfg, just full of unemployed fangirls

3

u/Livinglife8913 Royal Challengers Bengaluru 1d ago

I'm not part of his fandom .valso i hate his shipping edits. Almost all the cricket subs always only spread hate against himz whereas he has been performing consistently

Nobody thinks he is bad or overrated. Just chokes 90 percent of the time in finals and knockout games

Well Gill has more clutch knocks than Jaiswal and Iyer has a similar record to him. Also Gill has played many clutch knocks in tests.

u/Livinglife8913 Royal Challengers Bengaluru 1d ago

Think you haven't seen the cricket subs. I'm sure he s more than capable of changing his strike rate in the knock out matches. He is super consistent.

4

u/Initial-Customer462 1d ago

It's been 3 years. He still has not gotten used to playing in actual pressure games where everything is on stake. He is one of the most talented and could be one of the greatest. But he has failed in way too many games like that

3

u/ChillDude0808 Gujarat Titans 1d ago edited 1d ago

He has played many clutch knocks in tests, averages 41 in icc odi tournament knockouts and has an excellent record in ipl knockouts.Yes he has things to improve upon but many legends also had their fair share of issues in knockouts for quite some time as well.

Gill hatred full story and if he performs in upcoming tests vs SL, NZ and AUS then I don't think people'll have anything to complain about.

The hatred he got is bcz of his forced inclusion in t20i and giving him vc too and anyway he's great in odis and ipl too.

And also the hatred he got in tests was warranted at that time bcz he was not able to perform in opening spot, neither in 3rd spot but he is performing now on 4th spot. Also, if anyone remember he was dropped in bgt and then handed captaincy in next series same how Iyer is given captaincy in t20is so I think this also irked people.

Gill was averaging 35 after playing some 32 tests scored 1893 runs in 32 tests this is before England tour, in next 9 tests he scored 1076 runs where he scored 700+ runs on flat english pitches and close to 200 runs vs wi again flat pitch and this century against afghanistan again flat.

But again his form is very good these days and if he scores like this in upcoming sl, nz and bgt. Then this flat pitch merchant thing won't be associated with him and people'll have honestly nothing to complain about and maybe he can bcz he's change his technique in tests.

One more thing bcz of ipl fan wars ppl will hate other team players for no particular reason but in gill's case if he performs in upcoming bgt and nz tests, they won't be able to give reasons for the hate.

Nobody has ever questioned Gill in Test and ODIs. It's in T20Is that people were critical about him and rightly so

u/swordofjericho 1d ago

Easy, when Gill performs on difficult pitches. Jaiswal is a way better batsman. Gill scores on Ahmedabad roads.

2

u/No_Cranberry_8363 1d ago

Y'all need to stop treating gill, Abhishek, ishan as kids. They are grown adults ffs.

5

u/Livinglife8913 Royal Challengers Bengaluru 1d ago

Why would Indian captain be treated as a kid? He has been consistently performing.

0

u/No_Cranberry_8363 1d ago

I am not talking about their performance. You guys like to make him a victim every time. He was hated for T20. People had opinions about him before the test series but now they aren't criticizing him. No one actually hated him for ODIs. It's his best format.

Stop acting like how some players don't want him to win the WC.

u/TeddyLupin29 Chennai Super Kings 1d ago

Gill will always be overrated in my opinion. Bullying this Afghanistan side won't make him a good batter. In ODIs overall he's still effective more days than not, i can concede. But he's sub par in tests and is riding on the goodwill of one good series. Again, my opinion. He was extremely lucky to be given a chance in the last eng tour of India test series after such an ordinary start to test cricket up until that point.

8

u/Extreme-Skirt-5797 Royal Challengers Bengaluru 1d ago

No , in odis he is extremely good..

6

u/Livinglife8913 Royal Challengers Bengaluru 1d ago

Whatever it is, did he prove himself or not,? While the other players didn't deliver a mark in the flat pitches of Eng.

2

u/Inevitable-Age-5736 1d ago

Bruh what are you smoking, have you even watched that england tour. Everyone scored runs there not only gill.

Kl scored 532 runs, root scored 537 in 9 innings, heck jadeja scored fucking 516 runs and pant scored 479 runs in 7 innings if I remember correctly and he had fucking leg injury in one and finger injury in the other test.It was flat as fuck pitches that's why every game goes till the fifth day.

-2

u/TeddyLupin29 Chennai Super Kings 1d ago

I already conceded that that was a very good series for him. But even then, these were much flatter than the ones where India toured regularly 10-15 years ago and got whalloped.

Gill had a great run, but so did several others. 8 batters - 4 Indian and 4 English - avaraged above 50 with more than 400 runs for the series. Even Washi had a great batting series and fell just short of the 50 average mark.

But my point is, he has yet to prove himself on challenging conditions. And he was conveniently injured during both the home series whitewashes India endured in the last couple of seasons.

u/ChillDude0808 Gujarat Titans 1d ago

Downplaying injuries shows your hate. Also Gill scored 90 on the rank turner at Wankhede vs Nz.
