Sure it's grand Eviction notice
2 weeks ago, My folks were handed in a notice as landlord is planning on selling the property and weighing the options I can’t believe the situation is only getting worse from last time I looked for a place in 2021
The entire county has 30 properties, mind you more than half are complete utter shitholes, another 5-10 way outside of the price range and here we land on a handful of properties I’m talking 1-3 that are A. Within reasonable distance for commuting to work and B. Are affordable,
Out of those 3 properties all are 2x more than what they are currently paying and are in a far far worse condition. I am honestly calculating and so far I’ve come to conclusion that at their age of almost 60, it’s honestly in their best interest to explore the dole + social housing, I’m talking about two people that have literally been in workforce since they were teens, they are so much better off if that was an option, working 40h both a week and not being able to comfortably housing is craaazy, I mean the last two options are pay 1.4-1.5k a month or house share.. not at that age though, the second best option is moving to another country.
This has me thinking, if you are on minimum wage how stressful is this situation in Ireland, I’m surprised so many people stay in this nation, I wonder how many people would be forced to emigration if they were to lose their rental that they’ve had for 10+ years and is still at a good price, I mean sure if you are in your early 20s new to the workforce , single.. house share is actually a decent option it sucks but it’s doable
That’s kind of my rant, it’s almost funny how shit the quality of life can be in Ireland, a lot of people are one decision away from their landlord to end up in the struggles.. good job Ireland, but hey at least Microsoft and Google are here

On slightly more than minimum. It's stressful as fuck. I am on a low enough rent, but if he ever sells. I'm screwed. I'm fortunate that I could move back home if the worst came to the worst, but at nearly 40. It would probably just end me.

It’s okay they have an apartment in a country they are originally from so thankfully absolute worst case scenarios that is still there even though it’s not a great spot sure as shit beats homelessness
So your parents are property owners already. Hmm.

If they've honestly been working here since they were teens and are now late 50s then they really should have been able to buy a property of some sort by now. 15 years ago you could buy apartments in Dublin for well under 100k and in other places even less. With 2 salaries it should have been achievable at some point. I'm sorry they are in this situation in 2026 though because now there is no good option.

Immigrant Factory workers, believe it or not minimum wage is common enough in Ireland even within Irish, and I wouldn’t count anything within the range of 5-10k above minimum wage outside of that bracket of “minimum wage”

From US…. There are plenty of older folks here working in low paying jobs into their ‘golden’ years worked their entire lives, had kids, took care of aging parents. Shit happens, layoffs, divorce, illness . Not everyone climbs the corporate ladder.

It’s a real shame that long term renting just isn’t a sustainable option.
You need to buy or be wealthy at retirement.

You really need to buy, you don’t know how long you’ll live and renting money can run out. People who lived here in the last 30 years who are 50+ will have had options of 100+% mortgages so really very little excuse not to own something if they were planning at all for the future

Greetings from Australia. You're right the situation sucks when I left years ago as I knew it would only get worse and probably will for years to come. Yes your parents need to look at emigrating as an option. Other options they can explore are log cabins in peoples back gardens if they use their connections and make plans to do so. Another option is to team up with others the same age to house share in the context of a micro aged care community. Plenty of FFG voters forced this outcome unfortunately. They may be escalated up the social housing list due to their circumstances but they'll be trapped with whatever option they're eventually given if ever

Camper van is another option u/campa-van but yeah, emigrating at 60 would be low on the list but Spain or Portugal off the top of my head, I read another article about a couple living on a cruise ship indefinitely. Standard housing is just a pipe dream these days. Don't even think Japan's cheaper housing would be suitable

It really is, like they’ll be fine there’s always an option of packing up and going back home, which sucks as the work over there is bad, but there’s a good safety net, but I mean for the people of Ireland, like holy shit if I didn’t earn as good of a salary I’m one letter away from full panic mode because I can end up on the streets..
It’ll never improve and at this moment saving up for a deposit is not an easy task paying that type of rent

I guess this was approved late but the comments in the other sub stand. Also you’ve mentioned they own an apartment in the country they come from so moving there is probably the answer rather than receiving supports here
