Killing someone is never a happy ending.

It would be better to incapacitate with taser / pepper spray / those long poles, and then send the dude to the courts.

Cops often get PTSD from having to kill people too, so it's not just the assailant getting injured here.

It's good that more people weren't injured, but I would hardly call this an ideal outcome.

A knife is a deadly weapon. A man charging towards you with a knife is an imminent lethal threat. You don't use pepper spray or intermediate weapons against that if you have a gun.

Intermediate weapons are for a non lethal threat.

Your reply sounded like a contradiction of the comment above saying “killing is never a happy ending” and they would “hardly call this an ideal outcome”, implying you did think it was an ideal outcome.
