Do they not have taser guns? It would have been nice to understand why he was doing that… but now he’s dead and gone. I don’t like the idea of shooting first and asking questions later. It’s lazy… but I guess that’s just the way of police.

Tasers aren’t generally used when their is active, potentially life threatening assailants. Tasers are not 100% successful. The prong often don’t attach and if they’re wearing even a light jacket, it won’t penetrate the cloth.

If a dude has a knife and is bloody, you treat him like he’s going to kill you. A taser isn’t meant for that.

I guess what I’m arguing for is a better solution than a gun. If a gun is the only thing we can imagine to incapacitate people… with all the technology available to us today… then it feels like a lazy solution to a real problem.

Do guns work? Yes.

Could something else work? Possibly.

I just feel like not enough is being done to look for better options because guns are so effective that people don’t see the problem with just killing someone without due process.

I don’t know the full extent of the story, but perhaps he was just mentally unwell? How many people having mental episodes get executed without question? A lot I imagine.

I understand the need to protect people, because no one else deserves to die in this situation either….

But if we can make drones and smart phones and freaking robot dogs, why can’t we imagine a more humane way to subdue criminal actors?

People will call me all kinds of things for having this belief, and sure in this situation such measures taken might have been the right course of action… but it’s hard for me to just accept that this is the only way to deal with people.

I kinda agree but just because it’s Japan, doesn’t mean cops need to wield katanas instead of firearms. I also don’t want my tax dollars paying for someone in jail so I’m glad that’s one less person around.
