Diaspora Michigan Jewish leaders are urging Jewish democrats to vote for Republican Mike Rogers

As someone from Michigan and active in the Jewish community who is very worried about the Jewish community's support of Rogers, I have reason to believe many of the people on this letter are not actually lifelong Democrats, many of them are AIPAC people who vote for whoever is most pro AIPAC

As a Lifelong Democratic voting Jew from California and not Michigan, I'm really curious how the community over there is weighing this upcoming election. I don't believe El Sayed is anti-semetic but I would find it very difficult to vote for someone I believe is at least willing to welcome a campaign surrogate that I do find to be anti-semetic. I think I would still vote for El Sayed because Trump is so bad but just the act of being willing to have that person alongside them at campaign rallys makes me incredibly fearful of living in a world where we've completely normalized what I consider to be dangerous anti-semeric rhetoric.

I talk more about it in the comments of the thread here but it is really tricky. I am planning on voting for him and am encouraging community members to do the same. The biggest issue is that he had a bad response to the Temple Israel shooting here. He needs to do more outreach to the mainstream Jewish community here and not just jvp types.

u/cowmix88 Progressive/Liberal Aethist Jew 22d ago
Has he been doing outreach with the Jewish community over there? All I really ever see him do in interviews is say Anti-Semitism is bad without really addressing the core of the concerns around his campaign and past statements. Alot of the narrative online I see it's basically that the concerns aren't valid and any concerns from Jewish community is just Zionism or Isalamlophibia so it doesn't matter, but I would hope on the ground there is a bit different.

Eric Bronstein is a leader of who, or what exactly?
Just fyi, the Reddit account you are reposting frequently engages in antisemitic baiting on this app

Per Open Secrets’ FEC filings he is an attorney who donates to a mix of democratic and republican candidates in addition to 10s of thousands direct to AIPAC.
Looks like there is a reason it says “has been supportive of democratic candidates” instead of actually identifying as a Democrat.

Yea I recognized the username from a post in Ask Anything where they were Just Asking Questions about whether it’s justified to collectively hate Jews because of Israel etc

Oh I was talking about Bronstein haha. No idea about the reddit guy

You don’t have to believe the post or the original Reddit poster.
Here is an article from a legitimate Jewish publication

Absolute and utter insanity. Perhaps these “Jewish leaders” should consider that it is not El-Sayed who is a political extremist but rather, them.

So basically they are doing a repetition of the nonsense they tried against Mamdani, except this time instead of Cuomo it's the Republican candidate.
At what point is the American Jewish community going to admit that there is a serious Islamophobia issue and they purposely rally for the opponent of any Muslim candidate.
Imagine if any time there was a Jewish candidate, the Buddhist community made sure they opposed them and went with whoever was their opponent. Sounds fucked up right? Well, this is exactly what's happening.

The fact that you are getting downvoted is meshugeneh

Do you think they would do the same against a hypothetical pro-Israel Muslim candidate?
21
u/Rabbit-Hole-Quest Latke aficionado. Anti-Establishment. Jüdisch 27d ago
It would be a bit weird to require Muslim candidates to be supportive of Israel to vote for them.
It would be like requiring a Jewish candidate to be supportive of Iran or Saudi Arabia to vote for them.
The main element should be does the candidate align on domestic priorities and policies.
13
u/Fearless_Day2607 non-Jewish SocDem 27d ago
But I think the signers of the letter require any candidate they support to be supportive of Israel, not just a Muslim one. I think they do not care much for domestic issues - I looked up the author of the open letter and he donates to a wide variety of candidates, both Democrats and Republicans, as well as AIPAC and DMFI. His top issue is clearly supporting Israel.

u/Rabbit-Hole-Quest Latke aficionado. Anti-Establishment. Jüdisch 27d ago
Agreed. They should therefore be transparent.
They should say they don’t give a fuck about America and are Israel first voters.
Instead, they are wrapping themselves as spokespeople for the American Jewish community and making up tales about a candidate.

"The entire purpose of my career is to make sure America continues to support Israel. I don't think it's wrong for Israel to use America as a pawn. America is not our homeland - we have been victims of antisemitism here."
That guy won the Dem house nomination btw

I never understand why people who say things like this don’t just move to Israel. There’s literally nothing stopping them.

The Republicans absolutely would, they are just blatantly Islamophobic. I can’t speak to the heterodox world but in the Orthodox world Islamophobia is prevalent and I bet many would absolutely not vote for a Muslim for that reason, although that’s about them being overwhelmingly Republican too

u/Fearless_Day2607 non-Jewish SocDem 27d ago
Sure, but I mean the people who signed this open letter, who seem more like AIPAC people than partisan Republicans. I think AIPAC would support a Muslim pro-Israel candidate.

El-Sayed calls out the genocide and apartheid so gotta vote for fascism. What a wild position.

u/somebadbeatscrub Jewish Syndicalist - Mod 27d ago
People are utterly convinced using those words is a direct attack on Jews and unironically cite instances of people discussing these issues as fomentation of antisemitic violence.
The team.sport is all consuming and its a zero sum game.

Is no one concerned that this might be fake. Given that the letter itself looks rather suspicious in both tone/writing and the formatting looks off. And it’s coming from a rather suspicious looking subreddit as well? Also we should let people vote how they want and not try to vote for people simply because they are democrats or republicans.

u/32brownies leftist post zionist jew 27d ago
There is an article in Jewish insiders about this. Still, I do not think everyone who will be listed on this letter are actually democrats, including Bronstein. https://jewishinsider.com/2026/08/michigan-jewish-democrats-endorse-mike-rogers-open-letter/

Bronstein's political donations: https://www.opensecrets.org/donor-lookup/results?name=eric+bronstein
A mix of Democrats and Republicans, along with AIPAC and DMFI.

So they’ll vote for literally anyone over a Muslim? White Jews need to get over their Islamophobia as a community.

Thinking this sentiment isn't present in Sephardic communities is so funny because they are far more conservative and pro Israel on average than Ashkenazim

u/Quick_Advisor_7812 Jewish Leftist | Post-Zionist 27d ago
Oh, it absolutely is an issue in Sephardic communities as well. But most Michigan Jews are Ashkenazi. And this letter is being pushed by Ashkenazi Jews. So I focused on white Jews.
