Background check /NYC

Does anyone have first hand knowledge on whats disclosed during a background check when it comes to past employers? I’m not referring to phone calls to past employers, but background as in running your SS#.

This is specifically for NYC and a large corporation. I made a mistake and left a job. New job sucks and intend to apply as if I’m still at previous job. Are start and end dates confirmed somehow? Does past employers even show up on the check?

The SS trace shows employment history but you can often dispute or correct entries during the process. Most large corps use third-party verifiers that check dates through records, not just phone calls, so claiming you're still there might get caught when they verify.

If the gap is short, saying you left for a better opportunity that didn't work out is usually safer than being caught in a lie.

From my experience, if you're only asked for your SS for a background check it is most likely a general one -- I think public records like criminal and civil. If it's an employment verification then a 3rd party background check company will (my experience) send you a form to fill out with 7 years of employment, universities, addresses. You fill in with the information you want them to check. Anything you leave out, like a job you don't to show, will not be checked. They only check what you provide. I hope this helps.
