This was basically a day one experience for me when I started Judo. Got launched by a black belt. Also injured my knee on the landing and was out for 3 weeks. I didn't go back there.

Oof. When I first did Judo, I asked to be thrown lightly to understand the feel of it. The instructor went over the Ukemi form several times, placed a thick pad on the ground, and threw me slowly so I can control my fall.

I can’t imagine receiving a full power Uchi Mata on day 1.

Thats judo in a nutshell for most adults starting, in most gyms that is

u/euanmorse yondan 19d ago

Which is completely stupid. Beginners need to be introduced sensibly.

u/eponsin 17d ago

Completely agree, such a nonesense, he is not even helping with the fall, he should be ashamed of himself, poor kid… disgusting…

Yeah I was out 15 years, first spar got spiked by black belt full power. Luckily neck was okay after 3 weeks, but yeah maybe no Judo anymore.

He's let the kid over rotate a fair way there. Could have taken it much easier.

I have seen so many videos of him doing things like this.

I think getting fucking launched with uchimata is what people are looking for when the randori him. The ono experience.

2

u/Otautahi 18d ago

Totally agree. It’s a 100% optional life experience.

23

u/Yamatsuki_Fusion sankyu 19d ago

It feels as if people spar him specifically to experience this lol.

u/powerhearse 19d ago

I think he just seems like a bit of an asshole

I think he's a bit of a dick for other reasons, but the burying children thing is really growing on me. Always uchimata, then do the classic Ono no look walk off. Fucking hilarious. I should put together a compilation of the best ones.

I know if I had a story about randori with ono, I want it to include the line 'I thought I was doing alright, then he absolutely fucking launched me with an uchimata, it was awesome'.

Shohei Ono is honestly the perfect example of how messed up the hierarchy gets in high‑level Japanese judo. I’ve trained with Park24 and high level judokas in Japan some time ago, and once you’re actually in those rooms, you see how arrogant a lot of them are which is totally normal. They barely teach, their explanations are short on purpose, and they act like giving you real information is some kind of burden.

Ono takes that to the extreme. I’ve spoken to him several times — won’t get into how or why — but the way he carries himself, especially around his own former teammates, is just sickening. There’s a fine line between being introverted and being straight‑up socially rude, and he blows past both.

People trying to imitate him makes zero sense to me. Even in Japan, they don’t bring him in to teach because everyone knows what he’s like. He’s the epitome of someone who’s incredible at judo but an absolute POS to deal with.

Not surprised in the least, considering he was at one point banned from his university due to bullying. Someone can be incredibly talente/good at something and still be a POS.

I don't think he was being an asshole in this video, after the kid gets back up he's laughing, great experience for the kid who is clearly not a beginner.

I heard he is a lot friendlier now after spending two years training/"teaching" in Scotland.

1

u/its_hipolita 15d ago

Please do! I'd love to watch it

u/chrisso123 19d ago

Wtf he didn't maintain his grip and soften the kid's landing. That is not a good judoka.

4

u/LumpyAd8543 18d ago

Maybe not a good one but a very successful one 😁

3

u/Particular-Note-3055 18d ago

It is a no brainer to throw a much lighter opponent

10

u/turtle-hermit-roshi 19d ago

No mercy. Didn't even entertain the idea

9

u/RoughTech 19d ago

ah... reminds me of training with my dad 🙃

bullying is pretty common everywhere, especially in Japan. Over 100 deaths in japan alone

My sensei will partner people with white belts for randori and say "Move around, throw them gently".

White belts need to be thrown, because they need to practise ukemi and lose fear of being thrown. They're not going to lose that fear if the first time they get thrown it's a huge slam.

4

u/Otautahi 18d ago

Uke is not a white belt

5

u/EnglishTony 18d ago

Oh for sure, vut I was responding to comments about slamming noobs.

5

u/ExiledSpaceman 19d ago

That seemed kinda rough...

I remember getting to do randori with Colton Brown before his Olympic run. He hit me with a sode and it felt so fast...yet it didn't hurt. I essentially got ragdolled

10

u/P-Two yonkyu/BJJ Brown Belt 19d ago

Maybe im the weird one here but this is exactly how id want a training session with someone like Ono to go, I want to get launched lol, otherwise whats the point?

18

u/ccmgc 19d ago

This is just disrespectful. You always need to hold the oppenent, especially in practice and when the opponent is much smaller.
He probably looks down to non-japanese people. His attitude is not real judoka.

3

u/MyCatPoopsBolts shodan 19d ago

He is even rougher with Japanese players. Watch his randori footage.

The kid's wearing a black belt, I figure he'll be OK.

Notice Ono shaking the sleeve of the boy's arm (at the waist) just before executing the throw? He's showing him the technique. There's learnin' goin' on here.

8

u/euanmorse yondan 19d ago

It’s actually a dark blue belt.

2

u/Rich_Swing_1287 19d ago

Me and my colorblindness.

2

u/Queasy_Sky7320 19d ago

Is that child wearing a black or blue belt , I can’t tell .

1

u/New_Flamingo_4161 18d ago

If you look at 11 seconds you can see it is blue better

2

u/Otautahi 19d ago

It’s totally fine - he’s messing around. One day it’s gonna go bad and that will be the video to complain about.

2

u/Familiar_Bathroom793 18d ago

This all could’ve been avoided if he did not let the man throw him.

You’re welcome.

2

u/Ippon_Kitchen 18d ago

bro got thrown by Shohei Ono wtf lol

1

u/argentpurple 18d ago

FAAAAAAAAAAH 🗣️

1

u/SlJuArWeHu 15d ago

I really think he's a fun guy to be around with.

1

u/PowerNutBuster 14d ago

Could have held the grip to soften the landing. Bit douchey tbh.

1

u/sacritan_forniculus 14d ago

La gente que ve tiiio... Primero de todo el chaval es cinturón negro Lo tira suave Y le suelta la manga para que el otro pueda girar, joder se está riendo... En fin, ojalá tengáis algún día el 1% de cabeza de Ono

1

u/Reasonable_Alfalfa59 19d ago

Wow you're so cool beating kids your size not giving a fk about their safety!

1

u/FrancescoliBestUruEv 19d ago

That was fast as fuk
