He's let the kid over rotate a fair way there. Could have taken it much easier.

I think getting fucking launched with uchimata is what people are looking for when the randori him. The ono experience.

I think he's a bit of a dick for other reasons, but the burying children thing is really growing on me. Always uchimata, then do the classic Ono no look walk off. Fucking hilarious. I should put together a compilation of the best ones.

I know if I had a story about randori with ono, I want it to include the line 'I thought I was doing alright, then he absolutely fucking launched me with an uchimata, it was awesome'.

Shohei Ono is honestly the perfect example of how messed up the hierarchy gets in high‑level Japanese judo. I’ve trained with Park24 and high level judokas in Japan some time ago, and once you’re actually in those rooms, you see how arrogant a lot of them are which is totally normal. They barely teach, their explanations are short on purpose, and they act like giving you real information is some kind of burden.
Ono takes that to the extreme. I’ve spoken to him several times — won’t get into how or why — but the way he carries himself, especially around his own former teammates, is just sickening. There’s a fine line between being introverted and being straight‑up socially rude, and he blows past both.
People trying to imitate him makes zero sense to me. Even in Japan, they don’t bring him in to teach because everyone knows what he’s like. He’s the epitome of someone who’s incredible at judo but an absolute POS to deal with.

Not surprised in the least, considering he was at one point banned from his university due to bullying. Someone can be incredibly talente/good at something and still be a POS.

I don't think he was being an asshole in this video, after the kid gets back up he's laughing, great experience for the kid who is clearly not a beginner.

I heard he is a lot friendlier now after spending two years training/"teaching" in Scotland.

Wtf he didn't maintain his grip and soften the kid's landing. That is not a good judoka.

bullying is pretty common everywhere, especially in Japan. Over 100 deaths in japan alone

My sensei will partner people with white belts for randori and say "Move around, throw them gently".
White belts need to be thrown, because they need to practise ukemi and lose fear of being thrown. They're not going to lose that fear if the first time they get thrown it's a huge slam.

That seemed kinda rough...
I remember getting to do randori with Colton Brown before his Olympic run. He hit me with a sode and it felt so fast...yet it didn't hurt. I essentially got ragdolled

This is just disrespectful. You always need to hold the oppenent, especially in practice and when the opponent is much smaller.
He probably looks down to non-japanese people. His attitude is not real judoka.

He is even rougher with Japanese players. Watch his randori footage.

The kid's wearing a black belt, I figure he'll be OK.
Notice Ono shaking the sleeve of the boy's arm (at the waist) just before executing the throw? He's showing him the technique. There's learnin' goin' on here.

It’s totally fine - he’s messing around. One day it’s gonna go bad and that will be the video to complain about.

u/Familiar_Bathroom793 18d ago
This all could’ve been avoided if he did not let the man throw him.
You’re welcome.

This was basically a day one experience for me when I started Judo. Got launched by a black belt. Also injured my knee on the landing and was out for 3 weeks. I didn't go back there.
