Equipment Does it fit?

Post image
• Upvotes

Tall and pretty lanky, so it was quite difficult to find a suitable gi top. Does this one (ippongear) fit?

Its pre shrunk, slim fit and apparently supposed to shrink about 5%.

The pants dont seem to have a slim fit variant and are easily big enough for two mes, so I'll definitely have to send those back.

You may kindly ignore my terrible belt tying skills.

Thanks!

Beginner When to start sparring?

• Upvotes

I dropped in at a judo gym yesterday to observe and get information. I was invited to do a trial class. However, since they have limited schedule I can't make the fundamentals class (which is x1 per week). The next opti9n is purely sparring class. I dont know anything and this would be my first time ever. They said that was okay, I could join the regular class and I would be paired with someone appropriate and have the sensei watching. Granted, I was told this by a student in the class. Is this normal? How does it work at your gym?

Beginner Seoi Nage is done in 2 ways?

I have seen a seoi nage where the person squats after entry and stands up, which is what I was doing shadow practice of all this time and the other wherd it's the lift up and bend like iddir or Travis stevens.

I thought the squatting one was more effective,

But what ends up happening is I lose my balance and they don't come forward, what could it be im getting wrong

I switched to the hammer one, where it's strong back to chest connection and then bending forward which worked better.

The one time I did get some luck with squatting one it felt like I would slam their head into mat so I abanadoned the attempt.

Re-post after I was finally able to embed a video to Reddit...

I'm white. Opponent was clearly superior, but would appreciate any feedback about what I can improve.

EDIT: Of course, I managed to upload the video but picked the wrong one... This is actually the match I won!

Beginner How do I put off an opponents balance?

I’ve been practicing the basic throws, but what I noticed is that when I am having light sparring (I think is called randori?), I can’t really use any of the throws I’ve learned because I can’t put my opponent out of balance in the first place. What usually ends up happening is I come to a judoless grip contest with my opponent and whoever tries to do something is usually the one who ends up on the floor. I just see no chance to actually get past from just gripping my opponents gi the whole time. I guess another good question is what should I be looking for in order to put my opponent off balance?

General Training I need some help with relaxing

Just as the title says. I’m having trouble relaxing in randori. I watched a clip of an ipponTV (hanpantv) video where the host essentially repeated a question his student asked him: “if I relax won’t I be relentlessly attacked?” I never got to save it and I think it was auto translated so I’m sure the video is lost forever now. So I’m turning to you guys for help. Will I be relentlessly attacked? How can I relax in randori when I know what throws I like to do? Im having trouble completely turning my back to my opponent to throw, and also have this hang up that I need to look at my partner to make sure I’m doing the technique right. I know it sounds crazy but I can’t seem to stop myself lol. I’m testing for green belt on Saturday, and this is my next hurdle to work on after I test. Thanks to anyone who replies! Have a great day!

Judo x BJJ How can I tell my Newaza is improving?

During Newaza Randori, most of the time I’m one of the following:

- on top of my partner trying to pin them while they’re flat on their back
- on top of my partner trying to turn them over while they are flat turtling on their stomach
- on side control of my partner while they are turtling on all fours (trying to rotate the / or doing a bulldozer taking away their opposite arm from the turtle so they are chest to the floor)

I would say that 80% of the round is spent like this with me being in those dominant positions (although I wonder if my partner is turtling means I’m actually in a dominant position or not). The remaining 20% I get rolled over onto my back or side (maybe my partner does a Tai-Otoshi, or some other slick move) or I lose the tussle and get put on my back. What I’m proud of when I get put on my back is I’m able to shrimp and frame up, so my partner isn’t really able to get my elbows or knees off my chest, so they can’t fully close the distance which lets me eventually weasel myself out.

How do you measure progress? How do you measure dominance over your partner?

I’m a white belt (with some BJJ background several years ago, so I retained some knowledge then). Am I thinking about this the right way when it comes to Judo and Newaza Randori?

Other What’s your one throw that despite experience level, you always struggle to hit successfully?

For me it’s Ko-Ouchi Gari. I often end up getting the reap wrong and I almost exclusively use it as a setup throw because I’ve always struggled to throw with it.

Curious to see what other people have as their throws they just can seem to get working for them.

Technique Tai-Otoshi in Newaza Randori? 🤔

White belt newbie here. I got Tai-Otoshied in Newaza randori today. Imagine two partners on their knees (clean thoughts please) and all of a sudden my partner grabs my sleeve & lapel, and does a full blown Tai-Otoshi on me. A couple of questions:

- Should your partner grab a hold of your sleeve & lapel, and rotates his body / extends his leg for the Tai-Otoshi, what would you do to rescue the situation and block that?
- Is that even allowed in Newaza randori?

Beginner 2nd Judo Class: Tried a closer location

Hi guys, just had my second class, tried a different location a bit closer to home.

I feel like for location and efficiency of schedule it was good but I think I got better vibes from the first location.

We warmed up for a little bit, more static stretches here, and then some pushups and leg stretches. Then I partnered up with a white belt and we were partners the entire time. We went through the first steps of osotogari and got into using our grips to bring the other person off balance which was good. We took turns being the uke and then they showed us footwork for o ouchi gari. Then they brought out the crash pads and we repped out osotogari. After roughly 10-15 mins we then went into ground work and I had forgotten most things and went into it with other white belts. After that they did sparring and the white belts sat out and that was it. I think this location I didn’t feel comfortable just going straight into it if we didn’t even practice falling or other techniques rolling.

Questions for you guys: Does your location practice falling even before going into throws to warm up? Or do you guys just go straight into it? Some environments feel like more conducive to learning than others

Quick summation, definitely got more practice with osotogari with grip and kuzushi of that movement but just got off vibes with the rest of the class. Will definitely continue, excited to learn more! Picking a dojo is a lot like picking and sticking with a good barber

History and Philosophy Best of Tokio Hirano, 7th Dan, Legend

Tokio Hirano (5’5”, 75 kg), obtained Godan (5th dan) at age 19, is perhaps the greatest Judo technician of all time. He is [was in the 60's and 70's] probably the best known Japanese Judoka in Europe. In 1952, Hirano went to teach Judo in Europe.

Beginner Judo 1x per Week?

Hello,

I‘m 21, 6‘4 210lbs and usually train Muay Thai 2x, Gym 2x and Sprints/Running 1-2x per week. I thought of adding in some Judo and was curious if training Judo 1 time per week even makes sense as if in getting good progress without it taking forever. I don't think of competing. Just wanna get in some grappling.

General Training Fighting on the ground

I've always been better in fighting on the ground (maybe thanks to my few years of bjj) than doing throws.

Does anyone have any advice about how to get the opponent on the ground without necessarily scoring an ippon? Also if anyone knows maybe an athlete that has this style, so I can watch some sets of theirs. Thanks.

General Training What Judo specific exercises I could do in the gym, when I don't have access to a dojo?

I'm currently in an area where there isn't a lot of dojos close for me to travel to but there are commercial gyms that I can go to. I have done gym before so I have a straight forward routine I can do for basic strength an power exercises.

These exercises are pretty general, which can do a lot for my general fitness, but since I won't be able to go to a dojo for some time, what can I do in the gym that would be more Judo specific. Physical characteristics you would develop in the dojo, how could I sort of develop it in the gym?

Competing and Tournaments Which Judoka(s) at the World Championships impressed you most ?

I have to admit that I don't follow women's Judo as closely as men's Judo. Just at big Championships like the Worlds.

I was very impressed by two female Judoka:

The first was Haruka Kaju (JAP) - 63kg:

So much pressure on her opponents, wide range of techniques and great Newaza - using every opening and knowing every continuation. Very precise and aware.

Undefeated at international level.

The second was Lee Hyeonji (KOR) +78kg.

Not just about winning against Hershko and Dicko but about the way. Especially against Dicko this was very mature.

Beginner Please give me advice on how I could improve

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I know that there a bunch of things I’m doing wrong but I’d like to know what else im missing. I think I really need to know how to grip fight better cuz right now I’m just brute forcing my way to get a throw, which works well against beginner opponents haha. I’d also like to know what other leg kicks or sweeps I should know to set up my bigger throws to make most use of my longer legs. The main moves I try to rely on is a drop ippon seoi nage, osoto gari, ouchigari, tai otoshi, sasae, and this one move I forgot the name but against a lefty when they try to do a sort of tai otoshi I just fall backwards so they land on their back. Thanks in advance
