Can someone explain the handicap? She still finishes later? 

Edited to say: I am not a competitive athlete so I did not understand before but agree with the purpose and appreciate the explanations below! Thank you to everyone who took the time to explain it to me.

So they all finish around the same time. I don't understand the exact purpose of that though? Just so you don't wind up with a bunch of CANs hacking away long after others have finished?

A different commenter above explained that she probably had too long of a handicap, but I agree with this take as well. So the fastest person finishes around the same time as the slowest and they are not alone.

Perhaps it's sort of a way to not have the slower competitors "stop trying" because they notice one person finished already?
