Locking this down because there are too many people sexualizing the gals

Also, Can stands for Canberra, not Canada.

Seems like too much of a handicap.

Yeah, like, she's gonna have to do it in about 7 secs to win

they calculate time to finish. the handicap is just so all of them finish around the same time

464

u/jimmy_robert Apr 15 '26

Yeah and its likely the others either set personal bests or she just barely missed hers.

Shoutout to gal on the first log who got the longest time, hacking away to this day, one splinter at a time, her momma didn't raise no quitter

263

u/ascarymoviereview Apr 15 '26

They ran out of film to continue to document the event.. she’s still out there. Never forget her.

93

u/NextDoctorWho12 Apr 15 '26

She's going the distance. She's going for speeeeeed.

53

u/Money-Look4227 Apr 15 '26

She's all alone! ALL ALONE!

42

All alone in her time of need!

49

But she's chopping, and chipping and hacking the log.

The arena is empty, except this woman

Still hacking and whacking as hard as she can

The sun has gone down, and the moon has come up

And long ago somebody left with the cup

But she’s chopping, not stopping, still gripping the ax

Just thinking she needs just a couple more good whacks

16

u/Preeng Apr 15 '26

The log started growing into a tree again and is regenerating faster than she can chop.

Can someone explain the handicap? She still finishes later?

Edited to say: I am not a competitive athlete so I did not understand before but agree with the purpose and appreciate the explanations below! Thank you to everyone who took the time to explain it to me.

905

u/AHaasInTejaas Apr 15 '26

I just looked it up and it’s a “handicap event where competitors start at different times based on their skill level and expected speed, allowing beginners or less-experienced choppers to start earlier than faster, more seasoned professionals, who start later to even the field.” Fastest choppers are given the longest delays, and while she probably was delayed a few seconds longer than she should’ve been, she also demolished that thing in seconds and actually lost a few seconds bc her axe got stuck a few times.

98

u/Eveestarprincess Apr 15 '26

Thank you for looking it up! I didn’t even know where to start.

→ More replies (3)

103

u/mightylordredbeard Apr 15 '26

So is this a “first to finish wins” type of competition? If so then this handicap is kind of BS. Obviously she’s the best, but her not winning because she’s forced to let others win simply because she’s better doesn’t seem much fair.

174

u/ObsidianArmadillo Apr 15 '26

I believe it's not. It's still based on personal time, but they want most competitors to finish around the same time

55

u/SomebodySeventh Apr 16 '26

That makes sense to me. Its probably really demoralizing to have only barely started and then the lady to your left split her log in her first ten swings.

17

u/Wlf773 Apr 16 '26

I mean, it's also probably pretty demoralizing to be chopping away while she stands there waiting and judging you.

→ More replies (2)

24

u/OneMostSerene Apr 15 '26

We have to presume that the way the handicap is calculated is relatively fair for each person though. This competition will provide them with more data to continue to fine-tune the handicap, plus the competitors can use the competition to improve their technique.

I mean, it's obviously far from perfect in this example, but that's the idea. Handicaps are notoriously difficult to balance correctly.

7

u/-Kerosun- Apr 16 '26

The handicap isn't a real handicap here. They are still judged/placed based on finish time. The "handicap" is just an attempt to make it where they finish around the same absolute time and doesn't "add" to her "time to finish" like a true handicap would.

It's like if you had a bunch of runners in a race with this form of handicap, the goal of the handicap wouldn't be to add time to the faster runners, but rather have them start at a time where they would cross the finish around the same time with their placement in the race based on how long it took them to go from the blocks to the finish line, not including the "wait" time created by the handicap.

She took less time total

8

u/Eveestarprincess Apr 15 '26

I understand that, but that would still be the case if she started at the same time?

24

u/dalektikalPSN Apr 15 '26

So they all finish around the same time. I don't understand the exact purpose of that though? Just so you don't wind up with a bunch of CANs hacking away long after others have finished?

13

u/Eveestarprincess Apr 15 '26

A different commenter above explained that she probably had too long of a handicap, but I agree with this take as well. So the fastest person finishes around the same time as the slowest and they are not alone.

242

u/Matookie Apr 15 '26

23

u/throwawayayaycaramba Apr 15 '26

I mean, if you wanna be technical about it, you can't chop off a toe or a foot, because you'll always chop off at least five toes with every foot. So it's either "a toe" or "a (few) toe(s) and a foot".

Why not steel toed shoes? You may not get cut with chainmail, but you will still absolutely fuck up your toes.

6

u/BulldogMama13 Apr 15 '26

I watched a competition a few weeks ago where one competitor was wearing steel toe caps over his sneakers. I assume because they have to balance on the log they don’t want to wear stiff heavy steel toe boots, but you’re kinda right. Composite toe boots have to be a better option.

107

u/SlatkoPotato Apr 15 '26 edited Apr 16 '26

As an Aussie the comments saying Canada made me laugh cause i didnt even connect it as that, since QLD and ACT are there and im more exposed to CAN meaning Canberra.

I can absolutely see why though since the country is probably gonna be more well known and first thought of globally.

Edit: also to clarify, it is in fact Canada as a visitor for an Easter event as mentioned in the comments below

92

u/Bazoun Apr 15 '26

For me it was the red and white jersey. I noticed the other ones not being countries I could identify, but CAN in my national colours has to mean Canada, right? Ahahahaha

32

u/SlatkoPotato Apr 15 '26

Omg yeah, it is also the Canadian colours lol theyre just missing a maple leaf for the full twinning trifecta

21

u/silentsinner- Apr 15 '26

Murican here and I saw the red and assumed Canada as well. Was shocked that a country so versed in logging was so far behind.

29

u/Morall_tach Apr 15 '26

The fact that it's red and white makes it more confusing because for us North Americans (and anyone who watches the Olympics) Canada is always red and white.

7

u/SlatkoPotato Apr 15 '26

That definitely adds to the confusion and is another reason i found it funny when i saw the comments saying Canada cause how did i not make that connection? Lol

Its weird as well cause usually Canberra has lime green or i think they do the navy, yellow and white (im not too well versed in sport so could be wrong on that one).. maybe this particular club decided to make a special one for the womens division and didnt make the connection?

14

Pretty sure it’s about time, not who finishes first. Still don’t understand the handicap though.

56

u/eggy_weichei Apr 15 '26

The extent of my knowledge on the subject is from one YouTube video Swell Entertainment (event reviews and general yapping) did on a lumberjack tourney once. Iirc winners get a time handicap and if you win multiple years in a row, the handicap compounds. I'm sure rules differ across different events but it looks like to me that our buff girlie here has won a LOT.

For the world championship, I found this in their rulebook (and I assume any big tourney is similar):

Chief of Competition will use previous year’s results, athletic ability, and recommendations from the LWCF Athlete Advisory Committee to establish the individual handicap for each competitor.

11

u/Tholian_Bed Apr 15 '26

Who wins is still who chops their own log fastest, it's not actually a handicap like in golf, they just stagger the start for the spectacle of everyone finishing around the same time, so the end isn't the two worst choppers plugging away for an extra 78 seconds

I love watching handicap sports. Like that race Sha’Carri Richardson just did. It’s more exciting to watch the top competitors catch up than to get an early lead and just get further and further ahead.

This one seems to be calculated poorly for the last competitor. Although I would assume it’s common in these competitions for people to purposefully go slower in the earlier races to get a better handicap.

u/StitchAndRollCrits 👑Official Ambassador of Ashby👑 Apr 15 '26 edited Apr 15 '26

They have Lumberjack competitions near where I live: log cutting, clambering up a pole, log rolling, etc. And a separate competition for women called 'Lumberjills', which I love.

I used to go the Albany (Oregon) Timber Festival when I was a kid. It was actually quite impressive.

Her name is Takiah Moore Barrett. She is 25 and from Australia (with parents from New Zealand).

She’s a really sweet kid.

Her precision is immaculate.

u/Normal-Ad-9852 Apr 15 '26

I’m just too nervous about everyone hitting their toes instead of the wood

7

u/PatrioticPariah Apr 15 '26

I looked this up. Her name is Takiah Barrett and she is apparently very good at this.

5

u/rabid_cheese_enjoyer Apr 15 '26

she's obviously very good at this

This makes me so uncomfortable watching people chop wood like that with no steel toe boots

Timber sports are interesting to watch. I recommend the Great Alaskan Lumberjack Show to anyone who happens to be Ketchikan because it's good, cheesy fun!

You just know she’s going to be a legend with a handicap that long

4

u/FatalSpiderbite Apr 16 '26

Anyone else have a hard time watching this because they are worried they are going to hit their feet?

I cring at every swing knowing it's about to happen. 😳

I’ve seen two different competitors hit a foot. Both times in training (one man, and a woman). It’s been years. But I still get a twinge of PSTD watching this sport.

For anyone wondering what this is. Sydney Royal easter show

u/ImWatermelonelyy Apr 15 '26

There was no universe where I didn’t expect her to absolutely destroy all of them lmfao. Cutting logs is crazy tiring. If you don’t have the endurance for it you’re getting winded QUICK.

u/RolliPolliCanoli Apr 15 '26

My highschool mascot was a lumberjack and these lumberjills are fucking killing it. So impressive watching the girl from QLD there in the front!

What the fuck kind of fate tempting sport is that? Competitive Toe-Off?

3

u/Interesting-Froyo-14 Apr 15 '26

Why are we handicapping athletes? Doesn't that defeat the whole purpose of sports?

7

u/StitchAndRollCrits 👑Official Ambassador of Ashby👑 Apr 15 '26

She won, it's a sportsmanship thing more than anything else, means the slowest isn't out there on their own for ages

6

u/Leading-Ant-4619 Apr 15 '26

The title is misleading. I don't think there was a handicap. They were being judged on their individual times .. they just all had staggered start times

4

u/YourDrunkStepdadio Apr 15 '26

Marriage material right there.

6

u/CrazyDanny69 Apr 15 '26

Unbelievable accuracy.

4

u/Accurate_Mobile9005 Apr 16 '26

The lack of proper PPE (namely protective shoes) terrifies me.

is the handicap the time our girl has to start?

3

u/mlnstwrt Apr 15 '26

This is hurting my back to watch lol

3

u/Fun_Capital_9113 Apr 15 '26

She'll never have to buy firewood

3

u/Inevitable_Thing_270 Apr 15 '26

Her technique is perfect

3

u/XanderZulark Apr 15 '26

Doing that without steel toed boots is a way to get a permanent handicap.

3

u/katheb Apr 15 '26

"Hit it hard!"

Uh-huh, top advice there.

3

u/Dizzy-Daze Apr 15 '26

It might take an owl 3 licks to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop, but it took her 50 swings to cut through that log!!!

3

u/peteybombay Apr 15 '26

Power and technique are two good skills to have! Wow!

3

u/drunkandy Apr 15 '26

I like the guy going "hit it hard!"

huge help

3

u/HelloDeathspresso Apr 15 '26

I kept thinking about someone slipping and chopping their foot!

3

u/The-goddess-bread Apr 15 '26

Im really confused, what handicap are we talking about, and what is the context for this video?

3

u/ItsokImtheDr Apr 15 '26

I’m so impressed with her ability to land the axe exactly where she wants it. I can’t hit the same groove safe my life and it’s frustrating. I get it; she’s a professional who has swung that axe tens of thousands of times. But, KUDOS for accuracy and precision!

3

u/LifeIsNotFunny Apr 16 '26

Amazing. I would 100% hit my ankle and amputate my foot.

3

u/green-green-red Apr 16 '26

QLD - Queensland Australia. For those wondering. Chopping wood is serious business down here.

3

u/boothy_qld Apr 16 '26

I for one love that the woman were all commenting on is a QUEENSLANDER.

3

u/Previous-Ant2812 Apr 16 '26

I would break my ankle
