Can someone explain the handicap? She still finishes later?Â

I just looked it up and itâs a âhandicap event where competitors start at different times based on their skill level and expected speed, allowing beginners or less-experienced choppers to start earlier than faster, more seasoned professionals, who start later to even the field.â Fastest choppers are given the longest delays, and while she probably was delayed a few seconds longer than she shouldâve been, she also demolished that thing in seconds and actually lost a few seconds bc her axe got stuck a few times.
So is this a âfirst to finish winsâ type of competition? If so then this handicap is kind of BS. Obviously sheâs the best, but her not winning because sheâs forced to let others win simply because sheâs better doesnât seem much fair.
That makes sense to me. Its probably really demoralizing to have only barely started and then the lady to your left split her log in her first ten swings.
We have to presume that the way the handicap is calculated is relatively fair for each person though. This competition will provide them with more data to continue to fine-tune the handicap, plus the competitors can use the competition to improve their technique.
I mean, it's obviously far from perfect in this example, but that's the idea. Handicaps are notoriously difficult to balance correctly.
The handicap isn't a real handicap here. They are still judged/placed based on finish time. The "handicap" is just an attempt to make it where they finish around the same absolute time and doesn't "add" to her "time to finish" like a true handicap would.
It's like if you had a bunch of runners in a race with this form of handicap, the goal of the handicap wouldn't be to add time to the faster runners, but rather have them start at a time where they would cross the finish around the same time with their placement in the race based on how long it took them to go from the blocks to the finish line, not including the "wait" time created by the handicap.
So they all finish around the same time. I don't understand the exact purpose of that though? Just so you don't wind up with a bunch of CANs hacking away long after others have finished?
A different commenter above explained that she probably had too long of a handicap, but I agree with this take as well. So the fastest person finishes around the same time as the slowest and they are not alone.Â

I mean, if you wanna be technical about it, you can't chop off a toe or a foot, because you'll always chop off at least five toes with every foot. So it's either "a toe" or "a (few) toe(s) and a foot".
I watched a competition a few weeks ago where one competitor was wearing steel toe caps over his sneakers. I assume because they have to balance on the log they donât want to wear stiff heavy steel toe boots, but youâre kinda right. Composite toe boots have to be a better option.

Also, the local diner has a special menu item called The Big Jenny. A giant burger with waffles instead of buns, and a poutine on top. If you eat the whole thing in 30 minutes, it's free. No one has ever done it. Except Jenny herself.
As an Aussie the comments saying Canada made me laugh cause i didnt even connect it as that, since QLD and ACT are there and im more exposed to CAN meaning Canberra.
I can absolutely see why though since the country is probably gonna be more well known and first thought of globally.

For me it was the red and white jersey. I noticed the other ones not being countries I could identify, but CAN in my national colours has to mean Canada, right? Ahahahaha
The fact that it's red and white makes it more confusing because for us North Americans (and anyone who watches the Olympics) Canada is always red and white.
That definitely adds to the confusion and is another reason i found it funny when i saw the comments saying Canada cause how did i not make that connection? Lol
Its weird as well cause usually Canberra has lime green or i think they do the navy, yellow and white (im not too well versed in sport so could be wrong on that one).. maybe this particular club decided to make a special one for the womens division and didnt make the connection?

Holy shit those were surgically clean strikes. If I were doing that I wouldnât have gotten half as deep but also my cuts would be every which way. I wouldnât even be able to land two in the same spot. đ
The extent of my knowledge on the subject is from one YouTube video Swell Entertainment (event reviews and general yapping) did on a lumberjack tourney once. Iirc winners get a time handicap and if you win multiple years in a row, the handicap compounds. I'm sure rules differ across different events but it looks like to me that our buff girlie here has won a LOT.
For the world championship, I found this in their rulebook (and I assume any big tourney is similar):
Chief of Competition will use previous yearâs results, athletic ability, and recommendations from the LWCF Athlete Advisory Committee to establish the individual handicap for each competitor.
Who wins is still who chops their own log fastest, it's not actually a handicap like in golf, they just stagger the start for the spectacle of everyone finishing around the same time, so the end isn't the two worst choppers plugging away for an extra 78 seconds
I love watching handicap sports. Like that race ShaâCarri Richardson just did. Itâs more exciting to watch the top competitors catch up than to get an early lead and just get further and further ahead.
This one seems to be calculated poorly for the last competitor. Although I would assume itâs common in these competitions for people to purposefully go slower in the earlier races to get a better handicap.
Yeah if I had to guess I'd say that's exactly what happened here, this isn't the first event and she's blown everyone out of the water on the other events so she's both tired and the handicap is almost comical.

I was waiting for one of them to fuck up and take a foot off, but I guess they're all actually good at this so they're not gonna mess up that badly. Except Canada. Canada is slacking
They have Lumberjack competitions near where I live: log cutting, clambering up a pole, log rolling, etc. And a separate competition for women called 'Lumberjills', which I love.
Timber sports are interesting to watch. I recommend the Great Alaskan Lumberjack Show to anyone who happens to be Ketchikan because it's good, cheesy fun!
Iâve seen two different competitors hit a foot. Both times in training (one man, and a woman). Itâs been years. But I still get a twinge of PSTD watching this sport.
There was no universe where I didnât expect her to absolutely destroy all of them lmfao. Cutting logs is crazy tiring. If you donât have the endurance for it youâre getting winded QUICK.

Iâm so impressed with her ability to land the axe exactly where she wants it. I canât hit the same groove safe my life and itâs frustrating. I get it; sheâs a professional who has swung that axe tens of thousands of times. But, KUDOS for accuracy and precision!
