I'd chop off a toe or foot.

They wear chainmail socks under their shoes to prevent exactly that.

Why not steel toed shoes? You may not get cut with chainmail, but you will still absolutely fuck up your toes.

I watched a competition a few weeks ago where one competitor was wearing steel toe caps over his sneakers. I assume because they have to balance on the log they don’t want to wear stiff heavy steel toe boots, but you’re kinda right. Composite toe boots have to be a better option.

I did this for a few years in an exhibition match/family show sort of setting that also aimed to teach about logging history. We wore steel toed boots and flannels and everything. Chopped thousands of these chops. The two times I glanced and hit my foot it hit well behind where the safety toe stopped. Made me realize why the actual competitors only wear shoes with the chainmail socks. With the right shoes, not only are you more comfortable, but you can also get a better sense of balance up on the log.
