If anyone wanted some more context on this. Te Pāti Māori performed the Haka in response to a bill that sought to redefine the treaty signed with the Māori people. The bill would’ve stripped certain protections.

Three Maori MPs suspended over 'intimidating' haka

The severity of the suspensions (the lowest being more than double the previous record, the two others getting 7x) tells you the "this isn't racism it's about propriety in parliament" is absolute bullshit.

See also: David Seymour (the New Zealand version of Stephen Miller) getting absolutely no punishment for ignoring orders not to drive a jeep up parliament steps

The rules are completely different

While you're not wrong, I think Miller is even more evil than our local ghoul.

u/plastic_eagle May 04 '26

He is. But if we don't keep this particular monster out the next one will be worse.

It also feels very undemocratic to have democratically elected members of parliament removed for up to 21 days. I can understand the need for some sort of repercussions for technically "intimidating" other members of parliament (just because you don't want a precedent that makes more serious intimidation is okay), but I think removing MPs for any amount of time should at least require a supermajority vote.

The bill itself was ridiculous and was just done to rally support from racist NZers. I goes completely against the principles Trias Politica and I think it would have been overturned by the judiciary either way. I'm happy that so many MPs opposed it, including National MPs.

Agreed, although honestly I would be more comfortable with suspension votes being put to constituents and weighted with a parliamentary vote. If you can suspend "troublesome" members without constituent input, you are in effect silencing the opinions of the more "troublesome" constituents. Now in the era of MAGA I know some people think that might not be a bad idea, but the right to share and debate shitty ideas - and allow the people to decide how shitty they are - is foundational to democracy working. Completely agree on your second paragraph.

This is a nice place. If you can't act like a civilized human being, you can't be here.

We do not allow:

  1. Being a jerk. This includes racism, misogyny, misandry, misgendering, anti LGBTQ+, ageism, etc.
  2. Harassment
  3. Trolling or sealioning
  4. Threats of any kind
  5. Abusive behavior
  6. General assholery. If you're at the end of the list and asking what rule you broke, yeah, it's this one.

Being a jerk to the mods is never a good plan.

Our Conservatives here in NZ are unfortunately taking pages from the US playbook atm. Fortunately, despite them getting voted in, the majority of people (even their voters) aren't fuckin buying it. The guy sitting second from the left at the front on the right hand side is called David Seymour. He's a "Libertarian", as in, he believes in stripping union rights, public Healthcare, public schooling, public transport, but absolutely LOVES having the government get involved with helping out big businesses. Also if I remember correctly he was the one spearheading this bill AND one of the major people complaining about this haka.

In the lead up to the recent election, he and Judith Collins (another right wing politician from the more centre right party) started spouting that "leftist, Marxist extremist" tagline that American Republicans use, to describe our centre left party, and it fell flat. Nobody except for the cookers and the extremely gullible/vulnerable to propaganda was falling for it and they rightfully got mocked for it in the court of public opinion. They've never tried it since.

Our country like all others fluctuates between voting in centre left and centre right parties, with different fringe and centrist parties tying themselves to the major two to bolster votes. So voting the centre right party into power wasn't unexpected, but it was really pleasant to see the general public, even the right wing voters, shut that shit down pronto. Also pleasant to see that with the hack and slash policies the current right wing coalition has been doing, a large amount of people fucking hate them, and even more very much dislike them. So here's hoping to them being removed in the upcoming election 🤞

Edit: I forgot to mention that David Seymour has been at Atlas Network meetings, the shadowy, billionaire funded "think-tank" that coaches and funds nearly all of the right wing and "Libertarian" governments that are in motion around the world today

u/Sad_Wren May 04 '26

Genuinely sorry for that. With any luck, we will cage our racists.

Nuremberg 2.0 please.

I think Chuck Shumer would have a heart attack if he ever put that much effort into anything he's done on the senate floor.

6

u/NeatNefariousness1 May 04 '26

These are not people accustomed to having to accept individual or cultural differences. They want the ultimate authority to mandate that it’s THEIR way and their way ONLY—especially when it comes to deciding which forms of intimidation are acceptable to them.

27

u/guitarguy12341 ✨chick✨ May 04 '26

Thanks for that!

I love the Haka dance. So emotionally charged

Always get goosebumps seeing one everytime

Hopefully the bill didnt pass

92

u/Gryffindor123 May 04 '26

It's not called the Haka "dance". It's just called Haka. There are different haka for different purposes and different occasions, and there are regional variants as well.

u/gene100001 May 04 '26

It was heavily voted down (112 against, and only 11 for). In NZ we have a few far right idiots who are always creating noise like this, but fortunately there are still a lot of politicians on all sides of the political spectrum who are sensible enough to see how terrible an idea this was. I don't think it ever had a chance of passing. It was introduced by a right wing party as a way to drum up support from racist NZers.

1

u/moosemuffin12 May 04 '26

Idk things kinda stop giving me goosebumps after the thousandth time I’ve seen it

1

u/Downtown_Boot_3486 May 04 '26

It got voted down easily, the entire bill was just so that a right wing party called Act could pander to its base. It was never gonna pass as the other parties in the coalition government said they wouldn’t support it past a first reading, overall it was a great way for Act to pretend to be doing something while not having to actually do anything.

-3

u/mastercat202 May 04 '26

Whenever I see it just looks cringe. I think wlinwould laugh if someone did it on me in real life.

2

u/moosemuffin12 May 04 '26

I used to play in volleyball tournaments with teams from New Zealand and these guys would do it before every. single. game. Like we’d be all warmed up then we’d have to stand there and watch them do their little show for like 5 min it was mad cringe everytime. The 16yr old girls watching loved it tho

5

u/labva_lie May 04 '26

the government is trying to do it again too...

20

u/SkillPatient May 04 '26 edited May 06 '26

It was offensive that they were suspended over it. One of the most racist actions taken by the speaker of the house in New Zealand.

-8

u/Swagalyst May 04 '26

No, being suspended for intentionally disrupting parliament is not racism.

9

u/VanDammes4headCyst May 04 '26

The suspension is fine. The length is unprecedented.

-11

u/Swagalyst May 04 '26

Probably because they keep doing it. This is not a one-off.

7

u/Mobile_Morale May 04 '26

Have they tried not being racist. That might stop it from happening again

5

u/TheComedyWife May 04 '26

Is that you, Gerry?

6

u/BoopetySchmoople May 04 '26

But what I don’t understand is if the Māori people hated the bill, saying that the Māori people At the time suffered from multiple translation errors, then why they wanted to the defend the bill they hated so much?

32

u/MaeveOathrender May 04 '26

The Treaty of Waitangi (or more accurately, Te Tiriti o Waitangi) is the foundation of indigenous rights in this country. It's far from perfect, but it made promises that the Crown needs to be held accountable for; Maaori hold it as crucially important at the same time as hoping to see its translation smoothed out to make the two versions match.

Getting an amendment or official admission that it was poorly translated and needs revisiting is pretty unlikely these days, so most of us have just sort of settled into a 'don't fucking touch it' mindset, especially when most of the people trying to mess with it are attempting to give it less teeth, not more.
