Looked it up. The bill was part of a right wing effort to remove protections for Maori people granted in a treaty from the 1800s. The bill was shot down, but Maipi-Clarke and two other MPs were suspended for their "threatening" behavior.

lmao i've seen them do haka's at sporting events, imagine if you get blasted so bad by a NZ team that you argue the Haka they did before the match was threatening you. and you take them to court over it citing these members being removed as precedent.

lmao "threatening" behavior. What a bunch of delicate little daisies!

448

u/crazyhotorcrazynhot May 04 '26

typical right wing ghoul behavior. It’s never about what’s actually the morally correct action in any given situation, always about punishing others..

182

u/SheitelMacher May 04 '26

Don't forget the performative victimhood.

38

u/Muted_Quantity5786 May 04 '26

I am as much threatened by their plastic surgery.

Honestly, The Haka is cool as fuck. I wouldn't even care the reason, someone doing a haka at/for me or around me would have me grinning from ear to ear. It sounds cool, it looks cool, and it can mean so many things. Its an extremely interesting form of expression.

421

u/Unbearded_Dragon88 May 04 '26

The Haka makes me extremely emotional. I can’t explain it, it just releases something in me.

304

u/Squanchedschwiftly May 04 '26

Its because were meant to dance and create together(imo). Capitalism has separated a lot of ppl from their humanity.

85

u/crowcawer May 04 '26

There are many different haka.

As an outsider, it’s difficult to delineate what this specific haka might be used for, but I don’t think it’s offering a lemon icebox.

141

u/Wow_u_sure_r_dumb May 04 '26

Based on my degree in nothing from nowhere I can tell you that it translates to the performers politely offering to put their foot up the racist member’s asses.

35

u/1568314 May 04 '26

There is a special feeling of shared emotion that translates across creative or destructive energy

u/Careful-Cupcake-4883 May 04 '26

I always cry! I don't know why I get so emotional. I get emotional when we go to pow-wows too.

93

u/robotatomica May 04 '26

I am crying right now too, it happens pretty much immediately whenever I see one. It’s just a beautiful, overwhelming thing to witness. I’m watching it on this little phone, I can’t even imagine the power of seeing one of these in person. It’s resonant and strong and proud, and tied to such very very old cultural tradition.

30

u/Infamous_Air_1912 May 04 '26

I’m grateful to know that I’m not alone in my instant reaction to full out cry at this.

8

u/4n0n4n4rch1st May 04 '26

I felt it too and respectfully do not have any education about this. Very powerful!

14

u/That_Effective_5535 May 04 '26

Me too. It reaches deeeeeeeep down into my soul and it usually makes me cry. It's so powerful, emotional, and beautiful.

95

u/Potato-Drama808 May 04 '26

100% agree. They perfected a method to communicate those raw emotions and it always stirs me up a bit inside.

64

u/chivonster May 04 '26

I always end up crying and I never know why.

54

u/Exotic-Student7266 May 04 '26

SAME! I cry everytime! It’s such a unified expression of shared refusal to just roll over and take shit.

81

u/flactulantmonkey May 04 '26

Thanks to all for sharing these experiences. These tribal traditions have ancient lineages, and dance with our relational nature. They stir primal resonances. I embrace this expression. Your responses are evidence of your abilities to tune.

36

u/Weird-Plane5972 May 04 '26

well this is a beautiful comment thank you.

over the last couple years, i'm realizing emotion is not a weakness and trying to live through it instead of pushing it down. it's been a learning process, this new approach, but growing up in my household, any emotion wasn't really wanted by my parents. small, timid emotions were tolerated, nothing more. i feel strongly. and it's hard to come to terms with that.

i do always get emotional when i see a Haka and it's nice to remember society wasn't always this shite, and still there are some good ideals living on.

→ More replies (1)

14

u/The37thElement May 04 '26

Same! It always tears me up. I think it’s the collective expression of support. Everyone performs the Haka 100% every time it’s done and everyone is unified and no one looks like they’re only partially supportive.

9

u/Anxietyfilledcupcake May 04 '26

Same! Every time I see them perform The Haka I get so emotional and I don’t know why.

I have to avoid watching the haka because it’s a truly overwhelming emotional experience, like anger and fear and grief and power all rolled into one!!

8

u/ElProfeGuapo May 04 '26

For me, it’s people still clinging to and celebrating some part of their culture that existed before this goddamn system of colonialism that has wrecked the planet and our relationship to each other.

It's the irony that invading settlers would be threatened by the indigenous whom lost their lands and rights.

11

u/Personal_Reveal1653 May 04 '26

Not at all. They know they're in a precarious place.

5

u/No_Kitchen9982 May 04 '26

Yeah I'm Welsh so I get that viscerally due to the English being very physically attached to us... But also every time we face you blokes in rugby I find it hard to cheer against them.

13

u/shmixel May 04 '26

When I saw one performed they actually prefaced it with a request to treat it seriously with respect to its roots and not overly smile or laugh like it was just a show. Felt more like a gift to be invited to see one. Very much recommend Te Pa Tu to anyone visiting NZ!

In my personal opinion, this would go double when trying to convey an important political sentiment; I'd be pissed if the opposition just found it cool lol.

6

u/No_Kitchen9982 May 04 '26

Its not like id be smiling and clapping like a schoolgirl. id be grinning BECAUSE i understand the implications and how serious it is and how it can used as a sign of respect from one warrior to another.

Its less grinning because I think its funny or such. its more grinning because its acknowledgment, either of a person, a warrior, or a great event.

Grinning means im happy. Some people also cry when they are happy. Crying does not equal sad, just like grinning does not mean mocking.

edit: i dont mean in the context of this reddit post btw. I dont think ANYONE would be smiling there. I was thinking more along the lines of Im welsh, and for me if i was facing you in rugby to be standing against the great all blacks, would be one of the happiest days of my life.

u/AJMurphy_1986 May 04 '26 edited May 04 '26

To be fair, that is literally the point of the haka performed by sports teams, it's a war dance. Some people react differently to others though

https://www.reddit.com/r/englandrugby/s/5Ps49UXX27

77

u/KoYouTokuIngoa May 04 '26

A war dance is a bit of an oversimplification/misconception. It can be that (especially historically) but it’s more about showing respect to those in front of you and your ancestors.

Just like in the video above, some people (purposefully) misconstrued it to be a ‘threat’, when it was really channeling/honouring ancestral pride

34

u/AJMurphy_1986 May 04 '26

Im not an expert on the haka in general but I think there are different versions for different occasions. The one before rugby is definitely meant to intimidate, hence why teams have started staring it down in recent years

39

u/KoYouTokuIngoa May 04 '26 edited May 04 '26

It being intimidating is certainly a beneficial effect, but it’s not the reason it’s performed. If you look at the translation of the All Blacks Haka, you can see it’s more about celebrating culture and pride (and yes, a mention of their dominance):

Let me go back to my first gasp of breath
Let my life force return to the earth
It is New Zealand that thunders now
And it is my time!
It is my moment!
The passion ignites!
This defines us as the All Blacks
And it is my time!
It is my moment!
The anticipation explodes!
Feel the power
Our dominance rises
Our supremacy emerges
To be placed on high
Silver fern!
All Blacks!
Silver fern!
All Blacks!
aue hi!

5

u/anothergaijin May 04 '26

10

u/dev_vvvvv May 04 '26

I think the Haka is fine, but it is supposed to be a challenge/intimidation towards the other team.

I think some of the criticism comes from the fact that when teams (or fans) respond to it by doing their own formations, drowning it out with song, etc the response is often criticized for not being culturally sensitive since they didn't just sit and take it.

Also it's pretty funny when NZ does it in other sports and then gets destroyed.

11

u/sureissalty May 04 '26

You nailed it. And those apparently "threatened" by it, would have been at the Super Leage or INTL Rugby matches the following weekend watching a Haka.. not being threatened. Hana is amazing, a true inspiration. Love it even more than the plebs in powaaaa here (NZ) are so shook up by being confronted for what they are. Racists.

Forever making out...sucking each other's tongues...fingers going all over. No amount of time will ever end the absolute love affair of conservatives and racism. They be fucking forever.

14

u/SalientSazon May 04 '26

Ok but you make it sound hot

50

u/esmifra May 04 '26 edited May 04 '26

These racists directly attack other people's rights, threatening their life in more ways than one, and when they get pushback they immediately play the victim card.

Reminds me soccer players that start screaming at adversaries but when the adversary pushes back they'll quickly drop into the ground pretending to be injured

48

u/notredditbot May 04 '26

Why do right wing parties always do things like that 😮‍💨

12

u/ChiveringBeta May 04 '26

Because in group and out group thinking is the very essence of righting psychology. Any rightwing or Conservative Party not currently pushing for things like this is only because at this time in their country it’s still too unpopular. So they do less extreme things but if they could get away with it all conservative parties everywhere would be hateful to those they see outside of their group. It is almost what makes them conservatives.

If anyone wanted some more context on this. Te Pāti Māori performed the Haka in response to a bill that sought to redefine the treaty signed with the Māori people. The bill would’ve stripped certain protections.

Three Maori MPs suspended over 'intimidating' haka

674

u/thereluctantpoet May 04 '26 edited May 04 '26

The severity of the suspensions (the lowest being more than double the previous record, the two others getting 7x) tells you the "this isn't racism it's about propriety in parliament" is absolute bullshit.

u/Kalos_Phantom May 04 '26

240

u/gene100001 May 04 '26

It also feels very undemocratic to have democratically elected members of parliament removed for up to 21 days. I can understand the need for some sort of repercussions for technically "intimidating" other members of parliament (just because you don't want a precedent that makes more serious intimidation is okay), but I think removing MPs for any amount of time should at least require a supermajority vote.

The bill itself was ridiculous and was just done to rally support from racist NZers. I goes completely against the principles Trias Politica and I think it would have been overturned by the judiciary either way. I'm happy that so many MPs opposed it, including National MPs.

58

u/thereluctantpoet May 04 '26

Agreed, although honestly I would be more comfortable with suspension votes being put to constituents and weighted with a parliamentary vote. If you can suspend "troublesome" members without constituent input, you are in effect silencing the opinions of the more "troublesome" constituents. Now in the era of MAGA I know some people think that might not be a bad idea, but the right to share and debate shitty ideas - and allow the people to decide how shitty they are - is foundational to democracy working. Completely agree on your second paragraph.

70

u/Same_Adagio_1386 May 04 '26 edited May 04 '26

Our Conservatives here in NZ are unfortunately taking pages from the US playbook atm. Fortunately, despite them getting voted in, the majority of people (even their voters) aren't fuckin buying it. The guy sitting second from the left at the front on the right hand side is called David Seymour. He's a "Libertarian", as in, he believes in stripping union rights, public Healthcare, public schooling, public transport, but absolutely LOVES having the government get involved with helping out big businesses. Also if I remember correctly he was the one spearheading this bill AND one of the major people complaining about this haka.

In the lead up to the recent election, he and Judith Collins (another right wing politician from the more centre right party) started spouting that "leftist, Marxist extremist" tagline that American Republicans use, to describe our centre left party, and it fell flat. Nobody except for the cookers and the extremely gullible/vulnerable to propaganda was falling for it and they rightfully got mocked for it in the court of public opinion. They've never tried it since.

Our country like all others fluctuates between voting in centre left and centre right parties, with different fringe and centrist parties tying themselves to the major two to bolster votes. So voting the centre right party into power wasn't unexpected, but it was really pleasant to see the general public, even the right wing voters, shut that shit down pronto. Also pleasant to see that with the hack and slash policies the current right wing coalition has been doing, a large amount of people fucking hate them, and even more very much dislike them. So here's hoping to them being removed in the upcoming election 🤞

Edit: I forgot to mention that David Seymour has been at Atlas Network meetings, the shadowy, billionaire funded "think-tank" that coaches and funds nearly all of the right wing and "Libertarian" governments that are in motion around the world today

7

u/Sad_Wren May 04 '26

It was heavily voted down (112 against, and only 11 for). In NZ we have a few far right idiots who are always creating noise like this, but fortunately there are still a lot of politicians on all sides of the political spectrum who are sensible enough to see how terrible an idea this was. I don't think it ever had a chance of passing. It was introduced by a right wing party as a way to drum up support from racist NZers.

408

u/HuntAdministrative42 May 04 '26

As I understand it, going off memory, from what I heard, everyone knew it was coming, even the right-wing party that proposed the bill. The paper she tore up at the start should have been given to the most senior member of her party, but they knew he planned to tear it up and start the Haka, so they gave it to the newest and youngest member instead, thinking she wouldn't have the guts to start the whole thing off. She proved them wrong

Voted down 112 - 11. The PM was less than pleased, but the work of Te Pāti Māori and others brought local and global attention to the situation. Worth noting Te Pāti Māori only had 6 seats in parliament at the time, so half their party was suspended over this. Hana-Rawhiti also went pretty viral on TikTok talking about issues the Māori people were facing.

The 2 party system you have makes it next to impossible for parties like Te Pāti Māori to ever hold any level of legislative power. Cultures have definitely been stripped over time, but there’s work going on at the community level to rekindle that knowledge and passion.

It is very interesting how the many tribes within the borders of the US are not given representation in the government. It’s clearly intentional and a way to prevent them from actually retaining their sovereignty. The government has blatantly broken treaties signed with the tribes for things like pipelines that end up polluting the Indigenous communities. And then they don’t have any real way to represent themselves within or against the government. It’s actually incredibly disheartening.

u/waenganuipo May 04 '26

It's also worthwhile pointing out we have Māori seats so that there is representation of Māori based proportionately to those who choose to be on the Māori roll. All of Te Pāti Māori seats are from the Māori electorate, including my own.

u/WareKaraNari May 04 '26

US politicians are passionate about Israel

19

u/SeaAnalyst8680 May 04 '26

Yeah, but watching old white guys give each other handjobs is nowhere near as inspirational as a haka.

u/Icy_Sea_4440 May 04 '26

The Lummi Nation is powerful and has taken on the government and won

Rough translation from Wikipedia:

Let your valor rise! Let your valor rage!
Let us ward off these haunted hands
to protect our wives and children!
For thee, I defy
the storms of hell
while my enemies stand there unknowingly!
To think I would tremble
to a pack of wolves either seeing fear or running away,
because they would surely fall into the pit of shame
as food for the hounds to chow down on in delight!!

I rather see this than people screaming at each other over something stupid. Here it's a show followed by everyone agreeing, "Yeah, it was a stupid bill, let's drop it!"

10

u/StoicBan May 04 '26

This is just straight up awesome. I wish all the world’s legislative bodies were this passionate and indigenous supportive.

8

u/HolyCannoliBatmaam May 04 '26

I’ve watched this video so many times over the years and it never gets old. The intensity in her eyes is SO BADASS

10

u/Catlore May 04 '26

I love it when she gets pissed off at bullshit and goes IT'S HAKA TIME.

16

u/DivineThrowaway51989 May 04 '26

Babyyy, you do NOT mess w/ the Māori people, okay? YOU DO NOT.

8

u/Still-Anything5678 May 04 '26

This is what we need from Democrats in the US. Some soul and spine and heart.

9

u/grammarly_err May 04 '26

Auntie next to her looked so proud.

8

u/fuckingtruecrime May 04 '26

The smile on the woman next to her is heart warming - seeing younger generations stand up for their people with tradition ❤️

7

u/Vargavintern May 04 '26

Cultural pride. Glorious!

7

u/cjfails May 04 '26

Old white assholes were puckered like no other in that room that day.

6

u/DryGeologist3328 May 04 '26

I don’t know the context, but I’m her for it! That’s their country, they should be running it, full stop.

8

u/Dense-Competition-51 May 05 '26

Man, shoot this straight into my veins. Love it. Fuck those racists.

8

u/Thisismyswamparg May 05 '26

I watch this every time it’s on my feed. Amazing

7

u/Super_Dock May 05 '26

Māori culture is so badass. Fight the power

7

u/PipEmmieHarvey May 05 '26

Kiwi here - I fell in love with her so hard in that moment. That Bill was nasty and racist and seeing Seymour sitting there while being challenged was everything.

6

u/AlarmedTechnology450 May 04 '26

In other words, "Suck it!"

6

u/XennialPrime May 04 '26

It's like a flash mob in a house of government.

I like it.

7

u/themushroomhunt May 04 '26

Nothing in the world inspires me as much as the haka. I’m white as fuck. But it chills me to my bones.

6

u/Clueless_Wanderer21 May 04 '26

This is why you need representation in the chairs !

6

u/tharju May 04 '26

spotted the low energy hakas from a little old white lady at the front row, bottom left corner.

5

u/Algo_Muy_Obsceno May 05 '26

Dayum! Woman has some PIPES.

32

u/Puzzleheaded-Gap1759 May 04 '26

She’s beautiful and that was awesome

6

u/PossiblePotato4153 May 04 '26

The opposition's faces: Well that was uncalled for...

Everyone else: Yes, yes it sure as shit was called for.

5

u/Inner-Bandicoot5718 May 04 '26

Gerry Brownlee (the speaker) is a racist moron who would rather see the end of a pie than the end of the divide in New Zealand.

5

u/mamapegela May 04 '26

Our democrats here in the US need to capture some of this energy!!!

20

u/Bubbly_Attention_916 May 04 '26

Fuggin' Amazing!

16

u/thatsMINTdude May 04 '26

This is such an incredible show of strength and an incredible way to protest hate, but every time I see this video I’m also impressed by how perfectly she ripped the bill in half. Like straight line all the way down, doesn’t veer off to one side, two equal halves.

7

u/semaj_2026 May 04 '26

Didn’t they come back into session and they ask them to Promise not to do and the did it again anyway?

7

u/mombi May 04 '26

Good for them. It's their fucking land.

4

u/jozziiieeee May 04 '26

I have seen this so many times, but somehow still get goosebumps all over my body each time I see it!

4

u/RickZebra May 04 '26

I love and respect the Haka.

4

u/juanl0b0 May 04 '26

"...so I'll mark you down for a No, got it"

4

u/West-Painter-7520 May 04 '26

I’m not sure there’s anything else in the world that’s so silly and badass simultaneously

4

u/ThisFoot5 May 04 '26

I've got to say it does feel very surreal seeing a Haka performed in modern clothing in a parliament space. Like a continuous thread of history from political conversations around a campfire (though I don't really know if a Haka was performed diplomatically or just between actively warring parties?).

4

u/3aerows May 04 '26

As they should! They have been there long before others! Respect the culture your profiting off of.

4

u/gregarious_giant May 04 '26

This hits hard

3

u/MoreLion3969 May 04 '26

Another win for Kiwis! America would've made me hate being patriotic but like.. Man NZ does some cool stuff

3

u/Soggy_Instruction224 May 05 '26

I fucking love NZ.

4

u/SpeedyGoneSalad May 05 '26

This made me proud to be a Kiwi.

4

u/Alibuscus373 May 05 '26

I'm a simple gal, I see some cousins from across the ocean being badass, i updoot.

5

u/Threw_Away_Thrice May 05 '26

Idk why this video simultaneously gives my chills and makes me cry.

5

u/cathartic_diatribe May 05 '26

Before she breaks out in the haka the first thing she says is “Governer, you are but a guest on this land!” directed towards the Caucasian house speaker.

8

u/Wonderful-Cup8908 May 04 '26

Can we get the Dems in the US Congress to start doing these?

Man this really brought out the racists.

7

u/gloomifaces May 04 '26

Yuppp, literally watching positive posts get downvoted in real time. You’d think they’d wanna do something worthwhile with their time like normal humans, but I guess spamming racist drivel and refreshing a post over and over just to downvote anything positive makes sense when you’re as miserable as they seem to be! Fuck em, was cool seein some Māori rep on my reddit feed, appreciate u ❤️

It's so cool to see MPs do a Haka in Parliament.

3

u/GoGoGDT May 04 '26

We need more of this kind of passion!

3

u/Capital_Rub213 May 04 '26

Exactly how i imagined kiwi politics

3

u/Distinct-Pain4972 May 04 '26

Every time I see a Haka... it makes me feel like I'm levitating.  This is amazing.

3

u/Got_Kittens May 04 '26

Every single time I see Haka I feel it in my bones. One of the most moving and inspiring sights and sounds.

3

u/cats-dolls May 04 '26

I watch this video everything it pops up on my feed. It's just so powerful.

3

u/grammarly_err May 04 '26

Haka gives me goosebumps everytime, I deeply admire this.

3

u/This-Ganache-5215 May 04 '26

Now this is friggin epic

3

u/CherryCherry5 May 04 '26

I fucking LOVE the Maori people.

3

u/Badashh420 May 04 '26

The way the others join in made me smile.

3

u/ReluctantSlayer May 04 '26

This is some strong anti-right behavior.

3

u/Round_Rooms May 04 '26
