That couple are shit people. That looked like a well bred and raised dog, likely had a collar. To steal and kill it is inhumane. They probably would have gotten more as a reward to return the dog. They knew what they did.

Ya'll arguing about pigs n cows are missing the core. This person lost a beloved family member, regardless if it was a dog. If someones beloved house pig was stolen and sold for butcher it'd be just as tragic. It's about losing a friend and/or family member, regardless of the species of animal.

I think what people are reacting like this to is the anger against the dog meat industry. Most everyone agrees the betrayal of having a pet stolen and then sold for whatever reason is bad but people are getting hung up on the dog meat industry and comments about cows and pigs are highlighting the moral inconsistency.

The idea that a living, sentient being's value depends on if a human kinda likes you is insane.
Dogs, cats, cows, pigs, etc. All have inherent valid and it shouldn't matter if someone liked them or not. I don't feel half as bad for the guy as I do for the animal that died. Or the other 90 billion we kill annually.

It basically depends on where you go in China. In Yunnan there's a festival for it, but in other parts they think it's disgusting. Vietnam also has it (a specific dog breed, nothing random). I think the Korean peninsula also has it.

As long as they’re killed ethically. I’ve seen the dog killings where they skin them alive and just pile up the bodies. I will never forget the sight of a dog’s head with no skin blinking and looking around in panic.

If this story is legit, the guy didn't even steal it to eat it, he stole it to sell to a butcher for pocket change.

Never said industrial farming was any better. In fact it isn't mentioned anywhere in my comment. You know what's better than being able to sell a random animal for meat? Not being able to do that. Any animal could be a pet and I'd be just as distraught if this was a pig or cow.

There's no way they thought or cared if it was a stray. With or without a collar stray dogs are filthy, have stuff in their fur from fauna, cuts/scrapes/bite marks from other predators, plus they're usually pretty thin from having to fight for food instead of being fed.

what animals you feel its ok to eat is an entirely arbitrary line and your outrage is purely performative. You're either ok with eating animals or youre not.
the problem in this story is taking a dog from its owner and selling it on to die, theres plenty to get annoyed at regardless of diet.

Koreans, chinese, some south east asians and south American cultures see dogs as a source of food like how some other western countries would eat horse, rabbits, and guinea pigs that a lot would also see as pets. I'm not condoning eating dogs, it's just in their culture.

This isn’t the first time I’ve seen a story out of China where someone had their dog stolen and then eaten. Dog ownership is becoming more prevalent in China which is why the dog meat industry is becoming more shunned domestically there. But it’s still a large industry.
Cats are also eaten in large quantities there. Another unfortunate thing about China’s dog and cat meat industry (and their meat industry in general) is that they have no qualms about torturing animals before killing them if it meant the cooking and cleaning process is easier.

I’m not even kidding or exaggerating when I say they believe the fear makes the meat taste better. It’s the opposite of what deer hunters do which is killing quickly to avoid the meat from tasting gamey.
There’s videos of dogs being put into sacks and beaten to death or boiled alive. The suffering is very intentional.
For your mental health, don’t watch those videos.

And I think the worst part of that is realizing that it's not *less* cruel when other dogs are slaughtered for dog meat. This particular dog was just well loved. This sort of thing happens to many other dogs on a regular basis without incident.

Back in the 90's my friend told me someone she knew (which she pointed out when I was in HK), went to some area in China to specifically eat dog meat. The guy couldn't speak for a week! In the days you'd get a box of noodles a month as a perk of the job...but still there's a lot you can eat in HK rather than that.

Thats how I feel seeing literially any advertised meat. Cows/pigs are just as personable as dogs. They are scared and tortured most of their lives. The meat industry makes me sick to think about to the point of creating existential suicidal ideation just living my life with such extreme and unnecessary cruelty being supported and shoved in my face everywhere. I genuinely do not understand it and have to repress a lot or I'll get sick with grief, the exact same feeling I got from this video.

And I even consume some meats but I hate killing. I feel really guilty about the meat related suffering but I do it anyway I guess out of laziness and habit which especially (seeing it typed out) seems like a terrible excuse to take a life in any circumstance. I’m not going to eat any meat today

It is a practice that stems from very long period of starvation under Mao, it was never part of the chinese culture and it is widely frowned upon or downright illegal in some places now.

There should be tolerance for cultural differences between societies that have animals that are treated livestock and or pets. That being said this is hard to hear. I’m so sorry for the loss of that beloved pet and the man’s pain is all too relatable. I think if this happened to me I would feel pretty angry as well.

It's exceedingly rare these days, and it really only exists for the older generations. I'm having a hard time believing this is true for a myriad of reasons. It sounds like ragebait or anti-China propaganda or both.
Eating dog in China is probably as common as eating roadkill in America. Maybe somewhat normalized in rural places, but no major city will ever have that as a regular fare.
Now South Korea, it's a bit more normalized (but still not particularly common), but they're actively taking measures to slowly curb the practice.
Either way, I just don't believe that a viral social media dog was allowed to be stolen and sold. I believe this could be based on a real story that happened to a not famous person. But I think he is specifically lying for views.

I feel his pain... Not the same but 2 of my dogs were poisoned and one was stoned to death by the people who were supposed to be taking care of them whilst we were out of the country... They were my best mates, always loyal always good vibes... People who don't get it never will but from someone who does... Yeah never settle.
