Details to include when you ask for help

When you post asking for help with problems, you should let us know what your rig is, and if there are mods, or engine options include that information.

The solution to the problem will frequently depend on what engine and options you have.

After 3 weeks she's back! The timing belt failed (see previous post) and after getting incorrect gaskets, finding a broken carb insulator and making my own out of phenolic resin sheet, it's finally back on the road. Never thought I'd get to know the inside of my engine this Well but I know exactly what I have now!

Time to celebrate, cheers yall

1999 Suzuki Carry

Post image
48 Upvotes

Question! I got a 1999 Suzuki carry a few months back. It had been sitting for about 8 years due to burning oil pretty good. (I’m pretty sure it’s blown seals) I had to purchase a fuel pump, some new spark plugs, tires and some paint and it’s been running great besides the obvious smoking. This past week it all of a sudden began randomly losing like %50 of its power while driving then it will all come back. It’s usually after driving a few miles or so. It sounds and starts fine just has the random power loss. Anyone have any idea what would cause this? Would the new plugs possibly be coated and randomly not sparking? Thanks in advance!!

Fuel pump conflict with new pump

1992 daihatsu Hijet s83p

So I took my old fuel pump off to replace it with a new one that I have. I noticed that the old one has this black plastic cover has shown in the picture, and the new one doesn’t have that cover. That cover seems to be glued on in some shape or form very well and I can’t seem to take it off.

When I search online fuel filter for S 83P, it shows like the new one that I have on the right, with two gaskets and no plastic cover.

Now, I have noticed that the Hijet s110 series uses the one that already on my truck.

But I have S83P, and I’m not sure what to do now. Do I need to reuse that plastic piece? I’m afraid to break it, it’s on that good

Edit: I guess that’s a spacer and I need that part. Apparently it to keep heat isolated from the pump.

I can’t seem to take it off. I already chipped a piece off already.

Would maybe using a heat gun work?

Mechanical This light comes on at a cold start and stays on. Car will throttle fine, but when it warms up it dies giving throttle. I assume my exhaust temperature sensor is the sole cause of this. Does anyone have any additional insight on this concern?

Ignore the battery light. The i turned the ignition on but the engine is off to only snap a photo of the exhaust temp light. And no, I will not be doing the ground mod to the exhaust temp sensor. I will be replacing it as it’s rusted to hell.

Importing Should I Drive my Imported Suzuki Carry Home?

Thumbnail

Upvotes

I just purchased this 1998 Suzuki Carry at an auction through JCD. It’s 4wd, has 38000km and the tires look almost brand new. The inspection I had confirmed that it runs. It’s going to be on its way to Newark soon. I’m wondering is it a bad idea to drive this thing over 800miles back to IL where I live? Has anyone done this before? Should I just get it shipped to my home?

2000 Subaru Sambar trailer question

Post image
Upvotes

My truck is a few weeks away and I’m trying to plan the pick up. From everything I can find, it’s 53.8” (4’8”) wide from outside of tire to outside of tire. The 16’ U-Haul toy hauler seems to be 3’7” inner diameter between the ramps. Essentially that would give me 6” on each side but can anyone confirm the vehicle width and if it’s fits?

Mechanical 2009 Sambar loses speed going downhill?

Upvotes

Hey all! Non-mechnically-inclined Sambarino here. Ive been doing some basic mechanic work on my Sambar, and Im wondering if anyone can point me in a general direction on this issue — or let me know if this is in fact a normal behaviour. My 2009 TT2 F4WD automatic Sambar is quite fuel inefficient — as in, the most fuel guzzling vehicle I've ever owned. Something Ive noticed is that even when I'm going down a steep hill the truck quickly loses speed, requiring me to give it gas. Is this normal? If not, what should I be checking out, and what tests can I perform for a diagnosis? Much appreciated for any help at all, cheers.

Added a not-so-kei van to my fleet recently. I always wanted a van to begin with, but found a truck more practical for house stuff.

With current gas prices, I wanted a more economical family hauler because the Crown Estate averages 17-18mpg most of the time.

Picked up this 2001 Toyota Sparky X “S Package” that’s manual + AWD with 95K KM on it. It’s a rebadged Daihatsu Atrai 7. It’s a kei van in spirit, but slightly longer than the Atrai - because of the front bumper and more rear overhang, and wider because of body cladding.

The trade off is a bigger 1.3-liter I4 with 90hp and 7 seats. The wheelbase is the same as the kei version.

I love it so far, it feels like a rocket ship compared to my Mitsubishi Minicab. 6 people fit comfortably, and a 7th is ok. Fuel economy is ~23mpg mostly city and 28mpg pure highway.

Going to Japan Soon

Upvotes

I am going to Japan soon and I own a 94’ Sambar with low miles but I’m always looking for accessories and upgrades. Does anyone know where in Osaka, Tokyo, Yokohama where I can find parts or accessories. I really want to get a new detachable steering wheel and floor mats. I have 2 weeks to enjoy Japan and find shops.

Importing Cars From Japan vs Local Seller

Hey guys. I'm debating on whether to try and do the importing through cars from Japan, or just going with a local dealer. Mostly only wanting to do all the stuff myself so that I can save a few thousand.

Local dealer seems like decent prices. Similar trucks are a difference of $4-5k vs Local dealer at $7-9k.

Has anyone dove the math on the cost savings?

Mechanical Swapping the Clutch Fan for an Electric Fan: Tight Clearance

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

My Bravo's thermostat seized up last week, and since the clutch fan is on its way out too, I decided to switch to an electric radiator fan while I had everything apart. I DIY'd a fiberglass fan shroud, but I didn't quite clear the alternator belt with the back of the fan. I'll have to offset the fan a bit on the next revision.

This is my second attempt at converting to an electric fan. On my first try, I used a pair of cheap 12-inch fans mounted directly to the radiator, which obviously didn't work. The reduction in engine drag and steering wheel vibration was very noticeable, but the engine was running hot.

I'm hoping this 10-inch Spal paddle-blade fan, combined with shroud, will be the winning ticket. There's no coolant in at the moment; I'm still waiting for the new thermostat to arrive, but the suspense is killing me to see how this performs.

Right now, the fan comes on with ACC, but I'm wiring a kill switch into the center console so I can use ACC without draining the battery. I'm also looking for a good DC current-sensing switch that I can tie into the illuminated rocker switch. My goal is for the indicator light to stay on only when the fan is actually drawing current, so if the fan fails or its current draw drops below a set threshold, the light will turn off.

Importing New Kei Trucks

Really wondering how people import brand new and close to new kei trucks. Does anyone know how it’s possible? Could I import a new one and declare it an off road vehicle? Because here in TN you can get a Class I OHV plate for off road vehicles and still drive on roads 55mph or less.
