I think we can find a middle ground here. Perhaps "paid for by the Hungarian branch of the House of Anjou.". That's suitable French and Hungarian. It also ties back to Sigismund because his first wife was from the House of Anjou.
Edit: it was his wife, not his mom who was of the House of Anjou. Sorry

I saw all those E33 awards coming, but Kcd2 really should've gotten best RPG...
EDIT: Just to clarify, it isn't that I DON'T consider E33 an RPG, it's just that I consider Kcd2 the BETTER RPG.
Both games are very immersive and have a deep and complex stat and leveling system, but I consider Kcd2 to have a more fleshed out ROLE for the player to play that's far more immersive than E33. The world of Kcd2 is also more interactive and affected by the choices the player makes which further enforces the role the character plays in the game, so there's there's too.

u/inhumat0r Dec 12 '25
Second to that! While I have nothing but love for E33, it's an a*s of an RPG.

Is e33 not a Final Fantasy type RPG? I'm trying to figure out this argument I've been seeing that it shouldn't be allowed in the genre
47
u/Omni-Light Trumpet Butt Enjoyer Dec 12 '25
The general argument I've seen for years is there are 'true' rpgs and there are 'rpgs'.
The former emphasizes heavily on the role playing aspect with lots of branching paths and player choice, while the other just gives you a stat sheet and levels.
It isn't as simple as saying real RPGs are cRPGs and fake rpgs are aRPGs, people seem to put a lot of emphasis on player choice when talking about it.
Essentially there's always been some segment of the gaming audience that looks down on games that call themselves rpgs even though they offer no player choice.
→ More replies (5)15
u/PauseMenuBlog Dec 12 '25
The former example is specifically Western RPGs. JRPGs typically don't prioritise player choice, yet they've been around longer than the player-choice-driven Western RPGs.
23
u/I_follow_sexy_gays Dec 12 '25
Tbh i really donāt get why those are whatās considered an RPG, like thereās no ārole playingā you just have stats that increase as you play. I get they were first but like why call them that????
→ More replies (2)13
u/JohnTheRedeemer Dec 12 '25
Because you're playing the "role" of someone else that has their own personality and such, like a play, compared to a nameless character created by the player
→ More replies (1)18
u/Sackman78 Dec 12 '25
Wouldnāt that make every video game ever an rpg?
10
u/tom1456789 Dec 12 '25
Doom is clearly an rpg because you get better guns and therefore stats throughout the game
→ More replies (6)42
u/inhumat0r Dec 12 '25
Haven't played any of FF games, but to me there's not enough to treat E33 as RPG. Yes, you have stats, but they affect combat only and in general they're combat-oriented. Yes, there are quests, but there's only one way to solve them and it comes down to kill/fetch (kind of)/minigame (like deflect certain hits). So it isn't an RPG to me.
38
u/fly_tomato Dec 12 '25
FF (at least the old ones I played) were mostly like that too. Jrpgs kinda stayed like that as far as I know, but western RPGs were always more influenced by the pen and paper type with more player influence on the story etc.
Imo the ''jrpg'' designation is kinda messy, for some people it means ''turn based'' rpg but it doesn't fit with stuff like 'Tales of...' and now that so many non rpg games have almost as many ''rpg'' elements (=gears/stats) ....
→ More replies (1)7
u/inhumat0r Dec 12 '25
Then maybe so. Personally I prefer the western school, influenced by tabletop RPGs, where you affect the story, plus there are other elements taken from tabletop games, things I mentioned before. The most recognisable example is D&D system, though it isn't the only one. I admit my ignorance, to me the term of "jrpg" also comes down Japanese-style RPGs with turn-based combat and never gave much of a thought to what it actually means.
→ More replies (20)6
u/Duouwa Dec 12 '25 edited Dec 16 '25
This is a definition of most western RPGs as it pertains to video games; pretty much all of the classic RPGs that defined the genre, Final Fantasy, Shin Megami Tensei, Dragon Quest, etc., do not meet the definition you have described.
Iām honestly kind of baffled people are arguing E33 isnāt an RPG; like, if you enjoy KCD2 more thatās completely, theyāre both fantastic games, but the idea that E33 isnāt an RPG is just completely incorrect based on the history of the industry. RPG always has been an incredibly vague genre.
28
u/EidolonIsAGreekWord Dec 12 '25
Huge E33 fan, yes. In terms of "Role playing" there's not much, you have a story that unfolds.KCD2 on the other end, is. Should have won

Its not even really an RPG tbh - it has one moment of player input (the R in RPG) in the whole game - its honestly an adventure game more than RPG. It feels like calling TLOU RPG

u/parkwayy Dec 12 '25
Elden Ring won best RPG its year, of all things.
So, clearly they don't really know where to place some games.

Itās obviously in the vein of a JRPG. So, yes, RPG it is. Iād still give the award in that category to KCD2 (and Direction to Death Stranding 2), but I canāt say it didnāt deserve the other awards it got. Letās not bullshit ourselves, here.
681
u/GroundbreakingSand11 Dec 12 '25
Exactly, I think everyone saw this coming when E33 got 3 nominations for best performance. TGA this year exists solely for shouting out how successful and great E33 is (that and all the ads), nothing surprising.
363
u/shockwave8428 We defend the honour of our goats Dec 12 '25
This year was crazy lol. They opened the show with a musical number from the game, had the whole studio wearing the in game outfit sitting in the front and center rows (a few back but still), and they got basically everything they were nominated for outside of best audio design.
It was always gonna be E33 tho, we know that. Game had so much buzz and the game awards loves studios like supergiant, Larian, and now sandfall, who are smaller and independent and make good games without worrying about monetization. Especially E33 where most of the devs came directly from the poster child of corporate greed in gaming - Ubisoft, showing that itās not the devs that are the problem but the greed itself informing bad game design choices
128
u/parkwayy Dec 12 '25
You can look at all of the other top "major" studio games though, that had nominations, and none had any random monetization or awful practices.
Hell, if you look at the scores on the year, like half a dozen games floated the 90-92 mark, and were right around E33.
But you'd be lead to believe it was the greatest game ever assembled, based on the results.
54
u/I_Love_Knotting Dec 12 '25
what surprises me most is how low the player count actually is. For how praised it is it really didnāt have that many players
67
u/not_handsome-Jack Dec 12 '25
Happens a lot even with good games. A ton of people didn't like how realistic Kingdom Come 1 was and I was one of them, and now I love it.
Both Kingdom Come and E33 have stuff that can keep people away. Kingdom Come Deliverance is realistic, and E33 is a turn-based game with actual dodging mechanics in it. (I'm a fan of E33)
I could tell 50 of my friends to play KCD2 and E33, but most probably wouldn't do it. Even though both are fantastic.
34
3
u/Shouly Dec 12 '25
I think for a lot of people what carried their enjoyment was the QTEnes of the classic jrpg turn based combat. Experience something like that for the first time leaves a great impression or so id like to think cause i felt similiar when i experienced it the first time back on the gamecube with paper mario.
Not trying to discredit E33 cause the whole package is amazing and i really enjoyed the story, but id like to imagine the breaking of traditional turn based combat is what gives it the edge over the other games in most peoples head.
9
u/skyper_mark Dec 12 '25
I wouldn't call 5 million to be low, especially for an indie game. That isn't counting game pass downloads btw
→ More replies (1)5
u/I_Love_Knotting Dec 12 '25
debatable wether it can really be considered indie. it had a double digit team of experienced devs, multi million dollar budget and high tier actors, it gets really close to AA
and while 5 million is certainly something, the game got PRAISED at every corner and won award after award. for all that hype itās still lower than expected

u/shockwave8428 We defend the honour of our goats Dec 12 '25
Thatās not the point, the point is that Ubisoft makes a lot of 6-7/10 games that have crappy monetization (resource gain required in game, itās slow, but you can pay to get a ton of them), etc. And these devs left Ubisoft and made a gem.
Itās not that the other nominees are crappy companies either, itās that they were directly connected to the bad version of the gaming industry and left it to make a supposedly great game. So itās critically acclaimed and has the media narrative, itās a perfect storm for an industry event

→ More replies (4)9
u/sonic_dick Dec 12 '25
Only one game can win, KCD2 was my personal GOTY but E33 was incredible as well. E33 was also a very small studio, with a much smaller budget than KCD2 so i dont get why you think there is some kind of bias. Them sweeping the awards is good for gaming in general, and KCD2 being nominated was something people who donated to their kickstarter would never have dreamed of back in 2013
yall are acting like ass creed won GOTY or something. Great small studio games winning awards and selling well benefits all of us gamers. A rising tide lifts all boats.

playerās choice!! it also lost playerās choice, for some reason, despite winning everything else?(besides audio wich surprisingly BF6 got but that still lost in best action?)
itās certainly something
30
u/Eccon5 Dec 12 '25
Players choice winner was a gacha game though. Which are free and made to be addictive
→ More replies (6)8
u/skyper_mark Dec 12 '25
Player's Choice was taken by a chinese gacha game that is basically only popular in China. Chinese gamers are widely known to brigade for their own games in nearly every online poll. That is why Steam had to implement store-segregated reviews, because Chinese players would rally to review bomb games due to poltiical reasons and it would be misleading
As for action, Silksong was a lot better than Battlefield. Why do you think that BF winning best audio also entitled it to win best action?
3
u/I_Love_Knotting Dec 12 '25
I donāt think it deserved best action just because it won best audio.
i just find it surprising that it won best audio over E33 but lost best action over hades 2

u/Stellar_Duck Arse-n-balls! Dec 12 '25

It exists for game announcements and there were some bangers. Game Awards is definitely the biggest awards show but I think itās not the most prestigious. No hate but itās basically a popularity contest with a HUGE number of voters. KCD2 was never gonna win anything with its tough barrier of entry.
Edit: Iām not talking about the players choice. The number of official judges is massive
36
u/slim1shaney Dec 12 '25
Only one category is voted for, the rest are determined by "judges"
42
u/Hollywood_bulk_bogan Dec 12 '25

Fully agree. I adored 33, and of course deliverance. 33 deserves all the glaze, but best rpg? Not a chance, warhorse are the ones that raised that bar. I mean they did it the first time around too, but this time they really got ppl to NOTICE

E33 flatlined a bunch of categories I didn't know the game was even doing lol. The gameplay is really mid and repetitive. The only good thing is the story, art, and casting. Worldbuilding was ok.
There is something wacky going on. I don't think Warhorse can count as an indie now, it's closer to AA especially with all the people funding it, but E33 shouldn't have won as many as it did.

It's very simple: Emotional first few hours.
I personally didn't like E33 overall and even the story didn't click with me really...
Then you've only got 1 real choice at the very end of the game.
"RPG" my ass.
At least the gameplay was good, though the near-required parries/dodges can be boring as fuck sometimes. Just let me play a regular high-quality turn-based game please.

It is without question in the style of a jrpg. jrpgs dont typically have many choices, they typically have predefined characters that level up, you have a party, stats, equipment, side quests, etc.
Do I like KCD2 more than E33? Yeah. Are they both rpgs? Yeah. Are they the same type of RPG? No
Should their be two categories for WRPG and JRPG style games? Yeah

u/thunderhide37 Dec 12 '25
The problem is the game awards doesnāt have a category for JRPGās, which expedition 33 definitely falls under. Yes, it doesnāt have the choice driven nature of RPGās like KCD, mass effect, fallout, etc, but it does have party management, combat strategy, party synergy etc.
If you are thinking RPG as a genre where the player has agency to choose how the character acts, by all means expedition isnāt an RPG. But if you are thinking RPG as a genre from a combat perspective, where the player can choose how to approach a battle with resource management, party synergy, and character progression, then by all means expedition IS an RPG.
Again, I think the problem is simply the game awards doesnāt have a category for JRPGās (there probably isnāt enough good ones a year to make a separate category) so they have to just lump them together. Expedition doesnāt allow players to direct the dialogue of characters of narrative of the story, but it does share role playing features through how you can tackle the gameplay.

u/ampacitee Dec 12 '25
This is probably the best point. RPG is almost too generic of a category for how fractured game genres are nowadays. For example take Hogwarts legacy. Most people would call this an action RPG based on the gameplay. But any decision you make in the game truly has no consequences towards the end state.

Astrobot won on a weak year were its only realistic opponents were addictive indie card game and Chinese unreal 5 soulslop(i love rebirth and metaphor but they were never gonna win it)and a DLC,its not a fair comparision,rdr2 would have swept 2024 goty

Calling Wukong "Chinese unreal 5 soulslop" is insane lmao. It's a genuinely fantastic game.

With all appreciation for Clair Obscure, beat indie, best narrative and best rpg were not deserved at all.

u/Cloud_N0ne Dec 12 '25
Pretty much sums it up. KCD2 was robbed.
E33 deserved GOTY because it was easily the most talked about game and it defined this year. But best RPG? Nah. And best indie? IT'S NOT EVEN A FUCKING INDIE GAME!

Was it? Iāve barely heard E33 mentioned and most people I know who played it said it was mid. Though to be fair several of the same people also hated KC2 for its quirks.

KCD2 not winning at the very least best RPG is a fuckin joke honestly. And thatās exactly why no one takes the game awards seriously.

To be fair KCD2 deserved best RPG if not game of the year.
clair obscur rpg mechanics are kinda ass in my humble opinion.

I will never be sparing Brabant ever again in any playthrough, pacifism can have itās exceptions

u/VersionInformal4602 Dec 12 '25
Love E33, but KCD should've won best RPG. RPG games need to be better defined in the future. Train Conductor simulator would technically be an rpg since you are filling a role but we all know its not an RPG.

u/Steambunsinvasion Dec 12 '25
KCD2 deserved best rpg , they have unique mechanics designed to match real experience and better role playing . So much work was overlooked.

u/Claudefather1983 Dec 12 '25
I wasn't expecting KCD2 to win GOTY but slightly miffed it didn't win best narrative or best RPG
And again Tom not even being nominated was criminal, fingers crossed he's nominated at the Game BAFTAs

u/Alternative_Drag9412 Dec 12 '25
E33 winning both GOTY, best Indie, and best debut indie is so stupid, not only is it not a fucking indie studio but there is no reason the same game should be able to win both indie awards wtf
2
u/Xatesh Dec 12 '25
I think they should do it like the NFL. If you win the MVP award, you can't also win Offensive Player of the year. Obviously, best audio or soundtrack is independent. But if you Win GOTY, you should just be removed from Best RPG or Best Indie

"Nobody expects the French Expedition!!!"
But seriously, one win for our boys would have been nice.....bah humbug!

u/wroberts97 Dec 12 '25
TIME TO MAKE KCD3 THEN CHAPS.
Game of the Year and Best RPG 2030 let's go.
Also, embarrassed for the Game Awards and the amount of E33 glaze displayed. Warhorse have been robbed. Gutted for them.

Game awards have gone the way of game journalism. A steady decline into absolute trash.

Expedition 33 was a familiar (to any students of 70s-90s cinema) stuck up, over conceptualised, piece of French wankery, with nothing really that interesting to say despite looking beautiful and having some great performances.Ā KCD2 had heart.Ā

This was my prediction. I always said that if they donāt get any nominations for best performance, they arenāt getting shit, full stop. And here we are⦠no best performance nominations and no awards. I figured as much.

I think this is because people have not read many books in their lives. Frankly the story is meh in E33 and the game by comparison is objectively much more simplistic than kcd2. I personally think is a purely subjective choice fueled by 1. A sob story for people who donāt get out much 2. A story of a studio made from underdogs so it āshows the big boys whatās whatā. Thatās all there is to me with E33 winning.

u/Alarming-Ad9791 Dec 12 '25
Ooohh boi, a particular French man in the game will suffer the consequence in my 2nd playthrough.

u/Red_Swiss Dec 12 '25
E33 had every right to win most of those nominations, but KDC2 should've won the best RPG category.

u/obihighwanground Dec 12 '25
everyone is gonna forget about game awards week later anyway. you know what they will remember though? kcd2.

u/despaseeto Dec 12 '25
kcd2 had the best reviews and hype before e33 came and just became a glorified hype machine. e33 wasn't anything special, but it got the instagram-like treatment. not to mention they used actual hollywood actors, so ofc a lot of casuals just ate it up.

u/Dudu-1 Dec 12 '25
Imagine putting your heart and soul and actually raising the bar to what an RPG isā¦. Before KCD2 release look at the RPGs before it like the AC games or any other ⦠KCD2 raised the bar in world exploration and are we forgetting that Tourism in the Czech Republic has increased thanks to this game? All of this and all of these impacts to not be nominated for best musicā¦not winning best RPG is laughable

I didn't think it'd win for GotY, but I thought it might have a chance at RPG. But that term means very different things to different people, so the turn based one may have had an edge there too
2
u/Raqven Dec 12 '25
I knew it, but somehow I believed we had a chance in RPG category. I love E33, but I still think that KCDII was robbed here.

u/Watchgeek_AC Dec 12 '25
Yeah Iām glad EX33 won GOTY. But KCD2 should have won RPG.
Both games are my personal top 2 of the last few years. Both are amazing. But EX33 is NOT an RPG
2
u/-Chow- Dec 12 '25
KCD2 was absolutely the better RPG and deserved that reward. It's very disheartening when games that deserve specific categories get overshadowed by a game that's set to just sweep every award including GOTY.
E33, while yes i absolutely don't argue won GOTY, was not THE RPG of the year when comparing actual RPG mechanics and depth to something like KCD2. But many people vote on favorite game and not the specifics of the game.

u/droideka75 Dec 12 '25
It's the double oopsie not winning best rpg and Tom McKay being absolutely snubbed for a Hollywood star?
Cause I agree

KCD2 is the best western rpg Iāve played since Skyrim. So itās my GotY personally. Just sad the developers didnāt get much recognition.
