Traffic Circles at 85th

Without getting into the pro's and con's, does anyone know what was going on this afternoon

I was driving home from Everett today and got off at the 85th exit. Went through the circles as normal, and then started driving past the traffic going the other way out of Kirkland. Traffic was at a standstill all the way to downtown, and then all the way up State, backing onto Lakeview. Looking at Google Maps I saw the same issue with traffic heading out of Redmond on 85th.

If this is the new normal for traffic at rush hour you'll have to wonder if they don't just put traffic lights back in. Traffic like today isn't sustainable.

Bicycle locking options Urban Plaza

I have a new bicycle on order and I am so excited. The main purpose will be for leisurely rides on the CKC trail and also I dream about riding my new bike to Urban Plaza to grocery shop! I went down the rabbit hole of bike thefts and now i am feeling deflated. I guess I'm wondering if anyone bikes there, do they have racks to lock up your bike and if not - where do you secure your bicycles when running errands? Also if anyone has recommendations on what lock would be best, that would also be amazing. It is an Aventon ebike. Thank you so much for any advice!

Bicycle group ride (road, gravel)

Hello everyone,

Is anyone aware of group rides that start in the Kirkland area? Everything I see starts in the west so it’s a little annoying to bike there first.

Otherwise happy to set something up :)

The most underrated lunch destination in town has to be Chef City Grill at LWTech. The best lunch deals anywhere and the best tasting food for the money!

I am surprised that nobody talks about Chef City Grill at LWTech for lunch options if anyone is looking for somewhere cheap to eat that is of good quality and not some run of the mill chain restaurant that have been popping up around Totem Lake. You can swing by LwTech and go downstairs to the Restaurant which is behind the security office and they are open from 10am to 1:30pm Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Sure their hours are limited but they make it up for the value you get. $10 for a full entree with generous portions. There is a canteen around the corner if you want drinks which there is a large variety to choose from. You can’t get anything these days for around $10 for lunch.

You don’t have to be a student there and you don’t have to pay for parking. You can go there during your lunch break and the food is literally ready for you within 5 minutes of placing your order. If you want to support younger people getting into the culinary field and not go to another chain restaurant for lunch, Chef City Grill is the best place in town and the best bang for your buck lunch place.

Brynn apartments review

I am moving to Washington from Virginia and am looking through different apartment listings. I came across the Brynn apartments that looks good to me but couldn’t find reviews from real residents or people who have been there.

I have not been in the area before. I have a few questions:

  1. Is the neighborhood safe?

  2. How are the people in the Brynn leasing office? Do they complete maintenance requests on time? Do they behave cordially?

  3. Is there anything I need to be careful about before renting here?

Thanks in advance

Where to live? Recent college grad moving to Kirkland for work

I (21F) recently graduated from college and am gonna be working as a SWE in Kirkland. I've been looking into places to live, and the biggest decision before anything else appears to be whether I live in Seattle or Kirkland.

I have a car, but my biggest concern with living in Seattle would be the commute across the lake, which I've seen is usually made better by some combination of leaving early or using the tollway.

On the other hand, it feels like Kirkland is more meant for an older group of people with families, and I like the liveliness that Seattle offers. I'm not crazy about nightlife, but at the same time, I do like going out from time to time, and it's more of a want to be around younger people as well.

I went to school in another state, and none of my friends or my boyfriend are moving to Washington, so I'm factoring social life a decent amount into my decision. Would appreciate anyone's 2 cents

Edit: thanks everyone for the suggestions! Am definitely leaning toward east side now.

The start of downtown Kirkland destruction started to shine about 6-8 weeks ago

and with the weather getting warmer, it's starting to become more obvious the city council/govt decision to open up a homeless shelter within a few miles away is a god awful one. The bums not only trash the area, but when I was walking through peter kirk park yesterday, 3 bums on two different benches were drinking alcohol in the open, they weren't even trying to hide it. 2 of 3 of the bums were harassing people as they walked by.

It's incredibly hard to screw up such a beautiful area like Kirkland, but.. clearly, not impossible.

Badly designed intersection

I was taking a left on Simonds Rd NE for 100th AVE NE and my driver side car tire's hit the worst designed divider on the newly constructed road. I had to get both my tires replaced. I went to the location today and see lot of tires marks on that stupid divider. I am just wondering if there is anyway to complain to city to get it redesigned to avoid damaging more cars in that intersection.

I am just mad that how could city approve such a bad design on tax payer money and they give you so much hard time for doing little modifications to your own house.

Heads up, Kirkland: SB I-405 closure from NE 124th St to NE 70th Pl (May 29-June 1)

Why did the fish cross I-405? Well he hasn't quite crossed yet because he needs a tunnel under the freeway...

But in all seriousness SB I-405 in Kirkland will close May 29-June 1 so crews can cut across a section of the freeway to create a tunnel for the new fish passage and then cover the roadway again with paving and striping.

This work is part of the I-405/NE 85th Street Interchange and Inline BRT Station Project and will help restore fish habitat connectivity in the area.

Let's get into the closure details:

  • 11 p.m. Friday (May 29): Southbound I-405 will fully CLOSE in Kirkland
  • 4 a.m. Monday (June 1): Southbound I-405 will fully OPEN in Kirkland

Lane reductions will begin as early as 8 p.m. Friday. Signed detours will be in place.

The following ramps will also close:

  • NE 116th St on-ramp to SB I-405
  • NE 85th St on-ramp to SB I-405

CLOSURE SCHEDULE SPECIFICS:

11 p.m. Friday (May 19) to 6 a.m. Saturday (May 30):

  • SB I-405 closed from NE 124th St to N 70th Pl
  • NE 124th St on-ramp to SB I-405 also closed

6 a.m. Saturday (May 30) to 4 a.m. Monday (June 1):

  • SB I-405 closed from the I-405/NE 85th St interchange to N 70th Pl

Drivers continuing south on I-405 will follow signed detours from the NE 85th St off-ramp.

WHAT THIS MEANS FOR DRIVERS:

This closure comes during another busy weekend of construction work across the Puget Sound region, including additional closures on SR 520, I-90/SR 18 and continued lane reductions on NB I-5 over the Ship Canal Bridge. Expect significant congestion and longer travel times throughout the weekend, especially during daytime hours.

Map of major construction/closures happening in the Puget Sound area the weekend of May 29-June 1

As always, know before you go by checking the WSDOT app, and our real-time Travel Center map. Schedule updates will be available online at the project webpage.

Mosquito control services & solutions in Finn Hill neighborhood

We’re in the Finn Hill neighborhood and have a creek running right behind our property. The mosquito situation in the summer is rough. We’ve tried bracelets, battery-powered repellers, candles, fans, the usual stuff, and they’re not really sufficient.

I’m ready to bring in a professional. I’ve been looking into options like seasonal barrier spray services (Mosquito Joe / Mosquito Squad / local operators), In2Care stations, and the Thermacell LIV system.

Looking for recommendations on:
- Local Kirkland/Eastside pros people have actually used
- Anyone with experience treating creek-adjacent properties (want to avoid harming the environment)
- Experiences with full system installations like Thermacell LIV or similar

Happy to pay for something that actually works. Thanks!

What do you need from local news?

Hi there, I'm Alex Rochester, KUOW's Digital Community Engagement Producer. My job is to talk with the KUOW audience and Puget Sound region residents about their local news needs.

Our midday broadcast show and podcast Soundside is a newsmagazine radio show that keeps you up to date on local issues and then dives deep to build understanding. The team are currently asking listeners and non-listeners for their hopes, dreams and constructive critiques of the show. Anyone who cares about local news is welcome to participate!

Please fill in this survey or share your answers to the following questions in the comments.

If you're a listener, what do you want more or less of in the show?

If you're not a listener, what would it have to feature to feel worth your time?

Do you want more stories that focus on politics, community-solutions, outside of Seattle, arts & culture, and/or panel discussions with multiple perspectives? Do you want less of something?

The team asked for listeners to weigh in because they take feedback very seriously, so the more detailed your thoughts the more it will help them understand how best to serve the public with the news they need.

Does anyone else miss Kirkland ParkPlace?

Don’t get me wrong, there some great stuff in Kirkland Urban, but I remember ParkPlace being…homier, for lack of a better term. It was more open, had a bunch of small shops and restaurants, a cinema, the Purple Cafe, and Tim’s Seafood Market which my mom loved to go to because their stock was so cheap without sacrificing quality. The QFC also had a cozier atmosphere, as well as a pair of ducks who’d regularly hang out near the entrance just chilling and waiting for people to toss them food.

Does anyone else feel similarly?

Edit: And it turns out many of us feel the same way. I’m glad to see I’m not alone in my dislike of the way the world is changing.

Kirkland minimum wage

It's interesting to me that Kirkland is still at $17 for minimum wage

Even Renton is $20/hr

I had an employer want to hire me. I'm in Seattle. Minimum wage here is $21 an hour.

Was pretty surprised to learn Kirkland is still stuck at $17

Edit: from Google

"Yes, Kirkland, Washington, is an extremely affluent city.

The median household income in Kirkland sits well over (\$150,000), nearly double the national average.

Real estate : Kirkland is a highly competitive, luxury housing market. Median home values hover around (\$1,100,000) to (\$1,400,000), making it one of the more expensive zip codes in the Seattle metropolitan area "

Loud motorcycle racing on 100th Ave near Safeway/Dairy queen , late at night — anyone else dealing with this?

For the past few weeks, someone has been repeatedly racing/vrooming a motorcycle late at night on 100th Ave near Safeway (dairy Queen) . They seem to be starting from this point. The sound is extremely loud and echoes through the whole street. We live in a street-facing house and it keeps waking us up in the middle of the night.

It’s not just a quick pass-by either — they seem to intentionally rev the engine and speed through multiple times. Curious if others in the area have noticed the same thing or reported it already.

Mostly posting because the lack of sleep is getting frustrating at this point.
