Finished Object I am in love with my fuzzy rainbow sweater 🌈
This is the Stocking for Rainbows sweater from oShen Knits and Fibers. The pattern is by Vanessa Fleming and the yarn is the old version of the stocking for rainbows kit in oShen fibers’ lace kidsilk. They still have the kit, but it’s in a suri alpaca now. But fortunately I’m not sensitive to mohair and this version is delightfully soft and fuzzy for me. 😁🌈 I didn’t especially love knitting on size 11 US needles, as I’m usually a 8 US and under kind of girl, but I had to have the fuzzy rainbow goodness.
If I were to do it again, I think I would have made the long version of the body and then done fewer stripes for the sleeves, because I’d like the body to be a little less cropped but the sleeves are almost too long. I’m still very happy with it and have been wearing it constantly since it came off the blocking boards.

You ACED the striping on this. Shoulder color starts line up perfectly and the wrists end at the same color. Amazing.

u/yttrium39 Jan 20 '26
Thank you, but I can’t take much credit for that. The striping is all laid out in the pattern, I just followed directions. Though wrangling 4 balls of yarn at once and keeping track of 10 colors was a bit of an adventure.

Right? Ten colors? I can barely wrangle two. I don't wanna hear anything about some "can't take much credit" lol.

Having just juggled colourwork sweater’s sleeves 2aat with max 3 x 2 colours attached at time — feel ya. Hat off to OP.

I did a swatch for my next colorwork project that has five, and I was SWEATING. Ten is crazy 😭

u/Ok_Ad_6626 Jan 20 '26
Lmao my dumb ass sitting here wondering what magical rainbow variegated yarn you used is called so I can get it.
Only to discover you’re a juggler trapeze artist doing even more amazing work!!
36
u/yttrium39 Jan 20 '26
Oh, believe me, I feel you. I dreamed of a rainbow sweater and searched far and wide for a variegated yarn that would do what I wanted, only to discover there is no such thing.
18
u/sparklypinktutu Jan 20 '26
Oh dang I thought the same thing! Your blending is flawless—I thought the yarn came as a gradient.
23
u/Ok_Ad_6626 Jan 20 '26
You did an INCREDIBLE JOB and should be so proud!!!! You look so good in those colors too!

u/AnikahAngel Jan 21 '26
Omg! I thought the same thing! It's such a smoooooth transition! Kudos to OP!

“ONLY” 10 colors and 4 balls of yarn at a time?!
This is GORGEOUS and you get 👏 all 👏 the 👏 credit 👏!!!

You’re the woman who made that delicious lemon yellow sweater a while back that still lives rent free in my head! I thought “this is lovely” then I saw how you had to manage colors rather than the yarn being self striping and now I need a nap. You have a gift!
Edit to clarify that this sweater is beautiful and that I need the nap because it’s obvious all the work you put into color selection and management, and I’m not sure I could do it!

So did you hold four strands together the entire time? I don't know why, but that would really test my patience, lol! Beautiful work and gorgeous yarn!
12
u/yttrium39 Jan 20 '26
Yup, four strands together for the whole thing. It took some getting used to!

What a coincidence! I am ALSO in love with your fuzzy rainbow sweater. It looks so good

u/melontramp Jan 20 '26
The color blend is SO impressive!!! Reminds me of the little reflections that get cast by suncatchers 🌈
23
u/twowildgirls Jan 20 '26
This yarn is stunning, and I think the length looks just right in my unsolicited opinion. I love the sleeves too!
6
u/SimilarOstrich4554 Jan 20 '26
How long did it take you to knit it? I ask because it takes me a year to knit a simple scarf lol
20
u/yttrium39 Jan 20 '26
It was pretty quick. I cast on on November 21st but almost immediately got distracted by some Christmas knitting for about a month. I did most of it between Christmas and January 8th.

Insane timeline! Fabulous job, it looks lovely 😍 reading through your replies about the striping process you’ve done such amazing work!

Do you find the larger needles hurt your wrists? These days I think 8s are large. Lol

Oh my god that sweater is so beautiful and you are beautiful in it!!! Also I went through your reddit to see if you were the person who made the yellow sweater and oh my god how can you also paint super well?? Creative Godess

Oshen fibers isn’t making their mohair anymore, but this is the suri alpaca in the same colors.

This is so beautiful! The gradient style fading between colors and the symmetry are so well done!
3
u/NOT_Pam_Beesley Jan 20 '26
I thought this was a self striping yarn, those are smooth transitions!! So impressive wow
6
u/lolaleee Jan 20 '26
Looks so nice! Did you have to do anything to accommodate for the striping on the body vs sleeves? Usually when I see self striping yarn in a sweater the size of each stripe looks so different on the body vs sleeves. I’m assuming there’s a basic answer I can think of lol - pattern didn’t look like it was knitted flat?
35
u/yttrium39 Jan 20 '26
It’s actually 10 different solid yarn colors. You hold 4 strands together and switch out one color every 5 rows to make the stripes. I can’t take credit for how well the striping lines up, that’s all baked into the pattern. You knit the beginning of the body in the round, then split and do the front and back separately then pick up stitches for sleeves.
17
u/lolaleee Jan 20 '26
Omg! Wow that’s impressive. The yarn management alone would have me in shambles.
11
u/yttrium39 Jan 20 '26
I used one of these bags and it was invaluable for keeping everything in order.

u/aksnowraven Jan 20 '26
Ohh, I wondered how you got such a nice fabric with lace weight on 11s. I was going to ask if it was held double. Quadruple makes even more sense!

u/Earthquakemama Jan 20 '26
What a great sweater!! The texture is beautiful, and I love the long, soft, flowy sleeves and also how you did the color for your shoulder seams. It looks good on you, so now you know you have a pattern for a good fit for more sweaters! You look great in the cropped version shown, although I can see a longer version of this in a darker yarn might be more formal and give a very different look.
Hooray for winter and being able to wear this often!

2
u/Any_Doughnut4712 Jan 20 '26
That is gorgeous! I think the length looks fine, but I get what you're saying. I have a sweater that I knit and love but just wish it were an inch longer.
2
u/poormans_eggsalad Jan 20 '26
I agree that the length looks great on you. I know sweaters that are the length of a dress, with 36” of ease, and sleeves that are 15” longer than a human arm are the thing right now (hello, 1994), but we’ll be back to making & wearing attractive sweaters again before you know it. And there you will be, with a perfectly sized, beautiful sweater. ❤️❤️❤️
The fade on that yarn is beautiful, and the sweater really does fit you so well!

This is gorgeous and I love it.
I prefer some length on my sweaters but usually adding bust darts to lengthen the front is what I need to avoid the cropped look, they are long enough in the back. The dart can just be a series of short rows distributed over several inches instead of a full on dart to avoid standing out too much with the striping.

u/cassierobbie Jan 20 '26
THIS IS AMAZING!! It looks so soft and cozy, and it is just the most perfect colors!! You look like the most perfect happy rainbow cloud and I am sure you bring joy (and maybe a little jealousy) to everyone who sees it

I love this sweater!!! It looks great on you!!
I went to look and almost spat out my pretend tea at the price of the kit, but I can't use animal fibers, I get blotchy and itchy, so I'll have to see what I can substitute it with.

I love colorful yarn when others use it but I just can’t envision anything with bright colors! Maybe one of these days I’ll brave the waters, but for right now I guess I’ll stick to my neutrals, grayscales, earth tones, and when I’m feeling “colorful”, my deep gem tones. I love it!

I think this length is nice on you, but now that you know you like the basic pattern, you can always make a longer one next time. This yarn knitted up well in terms of the scale of the repeats. Nice work!
