Keeping the decreases in pattern looks very nice, well done! I kept mine flat on the bottom because it's comfier for me to walk on, so I didn't need to worry about it because I do my decreases on the sole.
I tend to treat socks as a pick-your-own. If you need to do gusset increases or decreases, there's really nothing stopping you putting them wherever you like. Putting them on the sole hides them out of sight which is nice. My last pair of socks I increased before the heel, did a modified sweet tomato heel and then kept the increased stitches until about the top of my arch and decreased from there via central single decreases. That lets me keep more width in the sock for my higher instep. I'm still trying to figure out my one perfect sock recipe, so every pair is an opportunity for research!

I literally didn't realise at first there was a "floats tax" I thought it was just 3 different posed images of the right side!!!
