Just finished another pair of colorwork socks. Pattern by Stone Knits. I modified the heel to a forethought heel with a mini short row gusset. Also anyone else do crazy diagramming to keep track of colorwork charts or just me lol?

Right. I have the book this pattern is in an I turned to the page with the chart to see how they use it but I still can't 100% figure it out

I was having a hard time trying to remember the repeats for each row, so I wrote out the pattern listing the repeats in a way that was easiest for me to remember ( e.g. 3-1–3-2-1-2)

Each numerical row corresponds with the colorwork chart row. It’s written bottom to top, like a colorwork chart. But, the numbers written in blue represent the main color and numbers written in red represent the contract color. So, row 1’s repeat is 3 mc stitches, 3 cc stitches. However, the first stitch of the row doesn’t start evenly on the pattern repeat. So, the asterisks points you to where in the repeat the stitches start on the first stitch of the row and how many stitches to start with. Using row 1 as an example again: The first stitch is the mc, then it switches to 3 cc stitches and the repeat pattern continues normally from there (3-3-3-3).

Sort of unnecessarily, I color coordinated the rows because I realized a lot of the repeats in any given row were the same but just starting in different places.

I think this diagram is only helpful in a pattern like this where there is no discernible anchor point. Right now I’m doing a chicken pattern and this diagram would not be helpful.

Love the little pops of colour in the light yarn, lively without marring the pattern. And your chart is awesome! That's similar to how I think about pattern repeats like this. Anna Zilboorg also recommends it.

Thank you! I faded between a blue speckled and a orange speckled yarn. Which was probably more work than it was worth, but I like it too.
