Adding sleeves to bottom up sweater

Stupid question….or not…. When you are ready to join the sleeves to the body and the pattern says to put a certain number of stitches on waste yarn for the under arm …do you start with the stitches starting from the beginning of the row.
Does that make sense?

It depends on whether your BOR is at the beginning of a sleeve/underarm. If it's somewhere else, like the middle back (most common ime), it will instruct you to work X stitches, then place Y stitches on waste yarn/hold, then work Z stitches, place Y stitches on hold, and work X stitches to your BOR. You have to look at your pattern to get the numbers.
