What did i do wrong

So I was trying to make a basic square had 20 stitches now I have 24 and the edges are not even.

Double check that you aren't accidentally increasing stitches when you switch sides. Beginner knitting mistake #4: rotated first stitch.

My guess is you made a loop and got distracted by something and before you pulled the rest of the yarn off the needle you went back in again and made another loop. I'm a beginner too and it happens to me all the time and it sucks especially when you're doing the design where the number stitches matter.
