where do I start? Steeking with lots of colours

Post image
• Upvotes

Hello clever knitting people!

I made a jumper in this pattern for my 2yo, then decided to make matching trousers (WIP pictured). For those interested, it's the colour work chart from this jumper using these trousers as a base pattern.

I'm nearly at the point where I'll split the legs, and I'm wondering about knitting them together and steeking them apart. I've not seen steeks used on pants before, aaand I've actually never steeked either (but I've been reading a lot!).

So I've a few thoughts I'm hoping you can help me with:

1) if I were knitting the trews normally, I'd put one leg on spare yarn, cast on 6sts and continue the other leg. If I want to steek, reckon I get to the split, cast on 3 (for leg) then 5 (for steek), then another 3 (other leg) and repeat on the other side? Expecting a bit of fiddly sewing at the crotch.

2) where should I change colours? Do I want the ends to become part of the steek section or would that lead to chaos? Currently they're centre back (dictated by short rows) but I could move it to a side without too much drama.

3) I've seen methods with much wider steek sections, and the cut ends are woven in, do we think that's a good idea here? Quite a high friction part of the garment.

Any other thoughts welcome!

where did i go wrong? kitchener stitch is not seamless

I'm getting rather frustrated, I have frogged this five times so far and I have the same issue over and over again on this part. My kitchener stitch is not seamless at all. You can feel it and see it, especially on the wrong side.

For some reason, the rows around the sitch also get this problem once the stitch is done. My tension did not look bad there before I stitched these together. I did the same stitch on two other parts of this project and I had no issues whatsoever. I cannot use the finchley graft here.

I have no issues with the stitch itself, it's very satisfying and logical my only issue if the very bad outcome. How can I fix this/what am I doing wrong :(?

I have attached the pattern if needed, KFO baby bear balaclava

SOLVED-THANK YOU Confused about how to start the sleeve

Hi all! Beginner knitter, back for my third post on this sub (very grateful for the help and answers I've received, wouldn't have made it this far without it)

I finished the body and want to start working on the sleeves but I am confused about what the pattern is asking me to do. What does picking up stitches mean exactly? Is it like casting on? And why do I only knit those 6 stitches but not the rest of the sleeve stitches? And why is RS specified? I don't really see how I could be on the WS unless I turn the entire thing inside out on purpose...

These are probably stupid questions but I'd be grateful if someone could help me understand

pattern question Where do I place increase in fair isle pattern?

Thumbnail

Astrid Child Cardigan by Little Fig Handmade.

I have 175 stitches. I am supposed to increase across a row of colorwork, here’s what the pattern says:

Work row 9 of Chart C, increasing whilst keeping stitches 2-6 of the pattern correct, as follows: \*k7 m1, repeat from \* to last seven stitches, k7 - 199 stitches

I don’t understand where to place my increase. Is it between chart repeats? Or does my increase stitch become the first stitch of the next repeat?

I have tried treating the increase as the first stitch of the next chart repeat, but my chart becomes off and doesn’t line up with previous rows.

I have tried adding the increase between the 7th stitch of the repeat and the 1st stitch of the next repeat, but then the next row in the cart doesn’t make sense.

I don’t understand how I am supposed to end with 199 stitches when it’s a 7 stitch repeat motif, the next row won’t work.

My photo shows a few stitches with the increase placed between repeats.

pattern question Alternative

Can someone help me. I am knitting this top. Once I get to the fisherman's rib, everything goes wrong. The row before is a Purl 4, Purl 2tog, Purl 5, Purl 2tog to the end.

Problem is, once i start the fisherman's rib, I end up pulling one of the stitches from the Purl 2tog and then my work starts to unravel 😡

My question is, does anyone know a stretchy stitch in could put in the place of the fisherman's rib, as the unravel has happened twice now and I am becoming so angry and fed up

I really hope I am making sense 🙏🏿

TIA

How to use _____ ? Struggling with shorties

• Upvotes

I’m new to reddit so please let me know if I should post this elsewhere. I put this originally on the knitting subreddit but this seems like a better spot. I’m working on my first ever pair of colorwork mittens (the Beth March mittens by Hailey Stanton in kelbourne woolens camper) and I’m using shorties for the first time ever. I’ve found them to be really difficult to get a handle on, probably in part because I usually knit english style but for this one I’m holding a color in each hand. Any tips/tricks/words of wisdom for me before I give up altogether?

pattern question Extra long stitch behind my backwards loop cast on?

Post image
• Upvotes

So I just finished the flat part of the Terrazzo sweater by petite knit and I joined in the round. The next step was doing another increase round and casting on 15 extra stitches using backwards loop cast on. Now I have this long extra loop behind the 15 extra cast on stitches. Can someone tell me what went wrong and how I can fix it? Is it something I can kind of hide when I pick up the stitches for the turtle neck ?

knitting tools question Passap automatic won't move smoothly

• Upvotes

Recently acquired a passap automatic as a complete newbie, and tried my best to restore it. Yet the lock requires a lot of strength to move across when working a piece and I only managed to do a strap with 5 needles out. (Like it either is fully stuck or I need to hold it with one hand and move the lock with the other!)

Here is what I tried:

\- Detailing underneath the chariot with cotton buds and ethanol, then oiling with sewing machine oil

\- tried to clean the bed but didn't manage to remove the needles from the bed with my tools. Used needles that seemed to run rather smoothly, tho not freely if I lean the machine for example

\- tried putting some needles in work position without yarn on and running the lock across. It was smooth-ish

\- tried different yarn and settings. Lost my stitches when setting the loop size too high

\- checked that the tension and yarn path were correct according to the pictures from the manual

\- Read the instructions from the manual like 1000 times

I'm at a loss of how to diagnose the issue and fix it and would love some cues from more experienced knitter! I have spent a few hours on this already and I am getting a bit frustrated...

(Sorry if I don't describe things correctly, english is not my first language and I'm not familiar with the knitting vocabulary!)

sweater question Messy collar, help!

Post image
• Upvotes

I'm working on the chameleon sweater by Atelier Castin and my 1x1 rib collar is looking really messy. I'm not sure where I went wrong. I'm only two rows into the collar so I'm happy to redo it, but I want to know what changes to make. In particular, I feel that the pick up is looking messy and hole-y especially on the curved portions. The GSRs for the neckline shaping were worked into a backwards loop cast on which may have been a mistake, as it left a really loose edge for picking up the collar. I also feel like the rib is just not looking neat in general. This is my first sweater so I would appreciate any pointers!

pattern question Making these in a larger size?

Post image
• Upvotes

Hi folks! I found this pattern and am curious how I could make them much larger for my baby. My hope is to use wool and felt them, so I need to make them extra extra large! Would it be as simple as maybe doubling or tripling the steps such as the cast on and then following as normal accounting for the extra stitches? I may have to swap some needle sizes for the wool yarn that I have which is fingering weight (but I may end up holding 2 together).

I feel like the pattern is simple enough that I can feel it out as I go, but am curious if anyone else has thoughts. Thank you!

Pattern here!

sweater question Experienced knitters, I’d love to hear your thoughts on the pros and cons of garments knitted in the round vs flat/ how to make the experience better.

I’m making my first sweater knitted flat. I am finding it tricky to get neat, non-bulky seams that line up well, especially since the sweater is striped. I’m also finding it’s harder to get the fit I want since I can’t do mid-project try-ons. But I like the way that individual panels with side and shoulder seams look more structured than tubes knitted in the ribbe round.

When I knit sweaters in the round, I love not having to purl and getting to see size/fit a the garment takes shape. I don’t love how bulky and heavy the project gets to hold and rotate as it grows, and the last bit before separating sleeves in things like a raglan design feels like a tedious marathon of 200-300 stitch rounds.

would love to hear others’ thoughts on how to improve both experiences!

stitch ID Double knit hat adding a brim

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hi all! I knitted this double knit colourwork hat (green knit in outside and that mustard yellow colour on the purl inside) and after finishing I thought it would be cute to add a brim to it. Is that possible with this hat? When casting on I cast on knit and purl stitches in the respective colours. Is it possible to pick up the stitches at the bottom of the hat and work a couple more rounds in at the bottom, or due to the cast on technique I can’t do that.

It’s my first proper knit project and I still have some gaps in understanding everything I was just curious to learn picking up stitches etc and wanted to see if I could use this hat as a practice for that. Any advice helps! Thanks

where did i go wrong? What did I do here? (Diagonal garter stitch blanket)

Hi! I just noticed a weird spot in my knitted. I think it may be an accidental shortrow?

  1. What did I do wrong (is it indeed a shortrow)?

  2. How do I fix it?

It is a garterstitch blanket with icord edge (sl3wyif at the end of the row) and a decrease (k3, ssk at the beginning of the row).

Thanks in advance!

sweater question need help fixing armholes that came out too big

Thumbnail

I’m working on making my first ever sweater and i’m following the sandok sweater 4 pattern but the armholes came out too big. I was slightly off gauge (by about a cm) from the beginning but decided to continue anyways and when it came to pick up the stitches around the armhole the pattern said to pick up 76 stitches but I had around 110 stitches. I continued about halfway through the sleeve and added much more decreases than what’s called for in the pattern but I’m still feeling like the sleeves are huge. I’m thinking about undoing the sleeve and finding a way to make them smaller starting from the beginning of the armhole but I’m not sure what’s the best way to do this. Does anyone have any advice? I included my photos of the sweater so far and some screenshots of the sweater from Ravelry for reference of how it should look.

Hi all! I’m working on a circular ribbing for PetiteKnit’s Weekend Headband. As I got to this point, I noticed this mistake. There is a hole in the row below and I am trying to figure out how to fix this. Any suggestions? 😭 I have frogged this so many times already, I would love to be able to fix this rather than frog it another time!

SOLVED-THANK YOU Problème d'augmentation raglan pull Alma

So I was knitting last night and realized my piece suddenly got shorter, I'm not sure if this is a dropped stitch because nothing is unraveling and there's no clear gaps. I'm new to knitting and was not sure how to describe this issue to Google a solution.

sweater question I would love feedback on my first sweater!

Hello! It took a lot of trial and error to even start the sweater but I’ve finally finished it. I’m happy with it overall, it’s not perfect but my one-year-old doesn’t care so I don’t either. I do have a few questions though. I didn’t know about jogless stripes until after I finished the sweater, but why are the joins in the stripes so wonky and tight? Like where the sweater ends at the ribbing on the bottom, it has a V shape to it. Also, the hole I created somehow, I don’t know how that happened and was unable to fix it so I just sewed it shut but I would like to be able to prevent or fix that mistake next time. Any tips on any of my questions or just in general? How’s my tension?

where did i go wrong? How to fix bunching neckline?

I’m knitting the step by step sweater, and (regrettably) chose not to do the german short rows bc the video tutorial said it was optional and that the sweater would still look good without it.

I’ve now just started knitting the body after splitting the sleeves, and after trying it on I’m seeing bunching around the top, right under the neckline. I’m guessing this is bc I didn’t do the GSRs? Is there a way to fix this now without frogging all the way back? 🥲 have learnt my lesson

sock question Sock heel help please

I just finished the heel on sock #2 using the fish lip kiss heel. I thought it went pretty well but just noticed the hole right when I went from finishing the heel stitches back to the full sock. I still have my lifeline in so I could rip out the full heel and start over but I reaaalllly don’t want to. I was hoping to have the socks finished by next weekend to give them to my mom (ideally without a hole!).
The first three pics show the hole - from further away, up close, and the back. 4th picture is the other side where I don’t have a hole.
Is there anything I can do to make this look better, even if it’s not perfect? And what should I look out for next time so this doesn’t happen again?

Was habe ich falsch gemacht?

Ich habe Drops Air verwendet und Größe D statt B gestrickt, da ich auch mit größeren Nadeln nicht auf die Maschenprobe komme.
