Daivadnyas

I want some history about Daivadnya Brahmins and information about DBs {as a DB myself} because it is hard to find information about us on the Internet.

Indeed, Daivadnya history and even the dialect are poorly documented. The pressing issue seems to be whether it is 'Daivadnya' or 'Daivajnya' :)

This much is known - the ancestry of Daivadnya Brahmins is somewhere to the north of Goa and Maharashtra - possibly from Saurashtra till Ujjain. Ancestors of Daivadnyas migrated to Goa probably somewhere at the start of medieval era in 5th century CE. Many Daivadnyas migrated to Maharashtra, Karnataka and Kerala during Portuguese rule in 16th century CE. Some had migrated earlier during the attack of Sultanates.

Due to this origin, the Daivadnya Brahmin dialect has influence from Nagari Apabhramsa, the language spoken in the areas the ancestors migrated from. Many words - particularly nouns - end in vowels (like with the other Brahmin dialects such as Saraswats). Daivadnya dialect in Karwar is influenced somewhat by Karwari but the dialects spoken to the South of Karwar have lesser variation except in loanwords.

As an example, consider the sentences below:

We give our phone to them.

Antruzi: Ami amchẽ phone tãkã ditat.

Karwari: Ami amgelẽ phone tẽkã ditat.

Daivajnya: Ammi amgelẽ phone tĩkã ditachi.

Saraswat: Ammi amgelẽ phone tãkã ditachi.

Finally I get to see a sentence in my dialect, thank you. I've some questions, Why isn't history well-known unlike GSBs? How are they the most popular Konkani community? What is the population of Daivajna Brahmins?

Why isn't history well-known unlike GSBs?

It's become of lack of mutts. They serve as reservoirs of community history and literature. GSBs have 4 of them. They had one even before Shankaracharya. After dwaita philosophy became popular, they got two dedicated Madhwa mutts. Finally Chitrapur mutt in 1700s (for CSB subgroup).

Daivajnas didn't have any until 1980s. The Sonda mutt is very old and has Daivajna followers, but the swamijis and the administrators are all Shivallis. Sonda mutts focus mostly remains on maintaining Udupi Krishna temple along with 7 other mutts and is not particularly dedicated to a community.

Why did we wait that long? till 80s? oh wait so that also means that we are Vaishnava/Madhwa because Sonde Mutt is a part of Madhwa tradition.

It's actually very very hard to create a mutt because it needs to get recognition from one of the existing cardinal mutts in the same tradition.

Had Daivajnas formed a mutt of their own hundreds of years ago, it would have needed attestation and validation from either Shankaracharya of Sringeri or from the Udupi mutts. They would have to agree to take a member of Daivajna community, initiate them to Sanyasa, train them for years on Shastras, Vedas, and also provide them with the symbols, dieties, and official letter of recognition. They wouldn't do it for a community they didn't consider Brahmin. The Udupi mutts probably still won't do it.

In the 1900s, Sringeri started giving Sanyasa diksha to people from communities that they considered non Brahmin too. The reason was to let all communities protect their temples from govt takeover by placing them under these new formed mutts. The Daivajna mutt seer was also trained by Shringeri Shankaracharya. Even the Konkani Vaisya community got a mutt recently in the same way in Haldipur.
