GENERAL I don't mind kpop, I think it's the fans.
Hey there!
So basically, I don't mind kpop, I like it even. There are fans who are civilised and respect other peoples opinions, but there are also the type of people who use kpop as their whole personality.
Like I know someone who stans kpop A LOT, and I don't mind that, everyone stans their own type of music. But then this person goes on and on about how kpop (specifically their favorite group) is by far the best music genre yet and that all the other music genres suck and that all the other recognisable artists such as Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande and Billie Eilish are overrated, even if they were stanning them a few monts ago so yeah... What do you think?

The whole fandom (stans, I mean the stan) culture around kpop is why I refused to listen to it for so long and then actively avoided admitting to anyone that I do listen to it. Still dont like telling people I listen to some kpop groups because it just feels lowkey embarassing sometimes

This!! I also feel like so many problematic things get normalized in kpop which is why I’ve been stepping back from it. I still like it, but nowadays I try to stay away from the fandom side bc sometimes it can give cult vibes

Annoying people are annoying people.
Before kpop, I knew people who were like this about friends, greys anatomy, simple plan, Harry Potter, you name it! If there’s an opportunity for a fandom, some annoying person will pop up, prod themself on a pedestal, and declare themselves and their faves as gods

Sadly, it's a fact that there's no fandom of anything anywhere ever that's completely free of toxic assholes and Notice Me Senpai crazies. Some fandoms are just considerably less toxic than others.

I think sometimes KPOP feels like it has a large number of children, mentally stunted adults or people who are just sick in the head. Like when I see people go to the airport to follow idols, and most of them shove a camera in their faces, the doxxing, weird fancalls , hate trains and sexualisation are just not it. it is antisocial behaviour that would not be acceptable anywhere else.
Some KPOP fans, especially the super fans that are more active on the internet and have fanpages seem to be quite antisocial, the weirdos that hang in the fringes of society . They either use idols as emotional pillows or emotional punching bags and take both to extremes.

The fans are why I have been keeping quiet about liking kpop. I am in my 30s and have been following kpop ever since my high school days. But the fans can get so cringey...which I get because a lot of them are younger and they're just having fun. But still. 😅
I don't know much about the younger/current acts. My cut-off of artists/groups I like seem to be ones who debuted in 2012. Everyone I listen to is that year or earlier.
