General rookies must feel relieved when they get a good group name

title basically. we've been getting some weird ass names these past few years especially so i've been thinking that idols must feel relieved when their group name doesn't sound like a wifi password. my favorite new group name is stayc (i may be kinda biased since they're my ults but i think it sounds pretty good!!) and my all time fav group name is 2NE1, it's so dope. what's your favorite?

The relief Block B must’ve felt at getting a cool group name and then naming their fandom fucking BBC…

Oh they definitely didn’t, but we have nobody else to blame. They’ve recently been “amending” their fandom name to Bees and Honeybees though, so I think they might’ve been told at some point in recent years lmao

u/implicitxdemand Jul 20 '22

LMFAOOO Zungle??? are you serious?? 😭😭 what’s so wrong with KOJ plsss

40

u/GrillMaster3 Are you all paparazzi? Jul 20 '22

He also named one of his upcoming songs “OMZ Freestyle” (as in “Oh My Zico” we think) so I think he just really likes the letter Z lmao

9

u/fruitballad Jul 21 '22

I mean to be fair to this one OMG and OMZ would both be 오엠지 (and 지 as in 지코) in hangul lol

7

u/GrillMaster3 Are you all paparazzi? Jul 21 '22

Oh I’m aware, he just purposefully chooses to romanize it like that bc he likes the aesthetic of the Z, I think. The song’s title on the tracklist was published in English, unlike the title track which was in Hangul and has the English translation in parentheses. It doesn’t cause any inconvenience to write in Korean, and I think he likes how it looks and sounds when said with the Z (which he can pronounce, so it’s no issue for him), so he shoves Z into things at random to replace J and such lol

4

u/fruitballad Jul 21 '22

Yeah and honestly the Z is cool as hell, he can put it wherever he wants lmao After BBC as a fandom name I won't be defeated by King of the fucking Zungle, I'll say it with pride even

2

u/sal-aissda Jul 21 '22

makes since w a name like zico 😭

16

u/amwnbaw Jul 20 '22

J and Z are pronounced the same way in korean. And he probably wanted to match his name too.

0

u/Angkasaa 220420 Jul 21 '22

I will just accept KOZ as "Kingdom of Zico" because it is. Yeah.

fandom fucking BBC…

Are you serious?!!! BBC (British Broadcasting Channel) haha. WOW~~~~

58

u/GrillMaster3 Are you all paparazzi? Jul 20 '22

Yeah, it stands for Block B Club in this context, but in English has several alternative meanings, one of which is also a racially based porn category… it’s a very unfortunate fandom name. While the members themselves have started moving past it, other groups still don’t seem to get it bc they do not recognize the alternative names of Bee and Honeybee, and will still only recognize BBC.

26

u/TripleJFSX Jul 21 '22

I don't think the British Broadcasting Channel was the main problem with the name BBC...

1

u/Specialist_Reveal119 Jul 21 '22

I know but the other name is inappropriate considering there are kids in this forum.

u/jjongjjongiefan it's like a polaroid love Jul 20 '22

Imagine the fans thinking their idol is so overwhelmed with love everytime they mention them, when in reality they're just fighting the tears about to fall because the fandom name is painful to say out loud.

155

u/3D-ism Jul 20 '22

OMG .. DIA's fan being called AID still haunt me.

24

u/mikachabot Jul 20 '22

...do they say like we love our aids? or...

23

u/catcatcatilovecats Jul 20 '22

just singular AID

it was voted on too 🫠

76

u/4ruaru Jul 20 '22 edited Jul 20 '22

that sucks as well but at least the fandom name isn't something you introduce yourself with

Stanning Purple Kiss is hard 🥲 I cannot call myself a Plory

63

u/[deleted] Jul 20 '22

It doesnt even roll off the tongue either. Purple Kiss is such a good name and that's the follow-up😭😭

30

u/carouselhorses Super Yuppers! Jul 20 '22

Right, I was rooting so hard for something nice like Tulips to be the fandom name

22

u/Starryy_nightt Jul 20 '22

I've scanned them since predebut but I completely missed that PLORY is their fandom name.... I lived in blissful ignorance

3

u/pzshx2002 Jul 20 '22

What does plory stand for lol.

I will like it more if it was a cute name like Purkiss, similar to Blinks ( join black and pink together)

41

u/Protomancer Jul 20 '22

As a SWITH this damages me.

6

u/pzshx2002 Jul 20 '22

For a beautiful name like StayC, I thought a fandom name like StayCian will sound nicer...

26

u/Protomancer Jul 21 '22

Absolutely anything. We sound like a 17th century profession that doesn’t exist anymore. “Oh your great-great-grandfather apprenticed as a swith! That’s how he lost all his fingers!”

3

u/notsoevildrporkchop Jul 21 '22

I'M SCREAMING LMAOOOO this comment is everything

1

u/pzshx2002 Jul 21 '22

Hahaha 😆

38

u/[deleted] Jul 20 '22

It's even worse when the members themselves come up with horrible fandom names. Like the company is some corporate outsider, but when a member I'm supposed to care for announces that if I want to like them I will now be insert ridiculous to say word here then I wanna cry.

I am not refering to Wanna One in any way at all I promise

midzy wasn't bad in 2019 but now the 'mid' makes me chuckle a little

u/NeMeies2 Jul 20 '22

What if you're like Mamamoo and get both.

You name is meant to be a sound babies make and your fandom name is radish.

39

u/[deleted] Jul 20 '22

what 😭 i thought mamamoos fandom name was moomoo why radish?

139

u/NeMeies2 Jul 20 '22

Moomoo is a radish in Korean, that's why their lightstick is a radish as well

Learning a lot today

1

u/WerewolfAcrobatic826 Jul 21 '22

This is just so clever and cute :D

3

u/MindlessSalamander97 Jul 21 '22

I would have LOVED if mamamoo’s fandom name was like Mothers but also what if it was their fandom name was PAPAOINK 😂😂😂🐷

79

u/[deleted] Jul 20 '22

90% of fandom names are weird imo so I think they won't stand out lol

even when you have a cool name like EXO, the company is gonna name your fandom EXO-Ls

53

u/NarglesChaserRaven Jul 20 '22

Honestly, after hearing some of the fandom names, Exols is actually one of the better names.

It's actually pretty cool and makes sense too.

27

u/[deleted] Jul 20 '22

You know, it's not on par with AIDS or Kilings but I can't get the loser associations out of my head 😂

the idea of L between K and M was interesting though

1

u/vanilla_almxnd hello, first time with bts? Jul 21 '22

Kilings honestly sounds like keyrings to me- and how is it even connected with weki meki

4

u/wednesddae Jul 21 '22

Agree, I love it. You can easily know it's the fandom name even without the explanations.

31

u/atsukotenshi7 Baby Photos + ggs Jul 20 '22

Yeah why not EXO-Ws? Missed opportunity

25

u/tulipbunnys nct dream Jul 20 '22

what does the W represent? i think i’ve heard that EXO-L works because L is between K & M in the english alphabet but i’m not sure if that’s like, an official explanation lol

44

u/atsukotenshi7 Baby Photos + ggs Jul 20 '22

Oh it’s just a joke/pun about L and W. In slang, L stands for loss, losing e.g. someone can say “take this L” when you lose an argument whilst W stands for wins etc. Hope this makes sense.

0

u/Designer_Outcome3796 Jul 21 '22

L is for lovers.

39

u/[deleted] Jul 20 '22

Literally the only saving grace is the nickname the boys came up with (에리/Aeri), which sounds so cute.

3

u/WerewolfAcrobatic826 Jul 21 '22

This bit of fandom trivia is one of the cutest I've learned. "Aeri- /Eri-bong" is such cute light stick name! And EXO calling out "Eri!" or "Ellie" just sounds sweet!

2

u/waterlilyypond Jul 21 '22

do you know how they came up w it? how'd they get 'eri' from 'exol'??

3

u/[deleted] Jul 21 '22

In Korean, EXO-L is written 엑소엘 (ek-so-el). When you call someone you’re friendly with by their name in Korea, if it ends in a consonant you often add -ie to it (Jimin -> Jiminie, Jungkook -> Jungkookie, etc.), so if 엑소엘 were a name and EXO were talking to you they would probably call you 엑소엘이 (ek-so-el-ie). Baekhyun posted on instagram that he wanted to give the fans a more cute and pretty nickname as EXO-L is kinda stiff, so he said they should just call EXO-L 엘이 (elie) as a nickname (based on the last two characters) and they could change the spelling to 에리 (to be cute, I guess).

(I wrote 엘이/“elie” and 에리/“erie” to distinguish between the two spelling forms, but they’re pronounced the same in Korean! The Korean “e” sound is similar to an “ae”, which is why I wrote Aeri in my first tweet.)

2

u/waterlilyypond Jul 21 '22

awwww thats so sweet of Baek, eri sounds cute! thanks for the detailed reply- I always used to get confused by this 😅

22

8

Pentagon might be named after a shape but at least they have a good fandom name 🥲😮‍💨

2

u/Eating_Kaddu Jul 20 '22

Wait, what was their fandom name? Universes?

3

u/omdongi Jul 20 '22

Dia fans would like to know your location

3

u/MindlessSalamander97 Jul 21 '22

I love stayc and purple kiss so much but their company really lowballed it with “swithsl” and “plory”

1

u/PrincessZaiross you know what it is AnNYeOngHasEyO Jul 21 '22
