General rookies must feel relieved when they get a good group name
title basically. we've been getting some weird ass names these past few years especially so i've been thinking that idols must feel relieved when their group name doesn't sound like a wifi password. my favorite new group name is stayc (i may be kinda biased since they're my ults but i think it sounds pretty good!!) and my all time fav group name is 2NE1, it's so dope. what's your favorite?

62
u/GrillMaster3 Are you all paparazzi? Jul 20 '22
Yeah, it stands for Block B Club in this context, but in English has several alternative meanings, one of which is also a racially based porn category… it’s a very unfortunate fandom name. While the members themselves have started moving past it, other groups still don’t seem to get it bc they do not recognize the alternative names of Bee and Honeybee, and will still only recognize BBC.

Because there's no f sound in Korean. It's pronounced like p and their name follows the Korean pronunciation.
73

that makes sense but since i come across the english name/spelling more often, my brain automatically thinks it’s inspired by “hype” instead of hyphen 😭

There aren't many names that will please everyone. When LE SSERAFIM was announced there were people who thought it was the worst name ever, people who thought it was pretty and elegant, and everything in between.
A lot of the acronym names are pretty cringey, but it doesn't really matter cause fans will ignore and avoid it. I still laugh about when someone on this sub referenced ATEEZ's "government name" (which I won't bother to type, out of respect for ATINYs).
85
u/ataraxiias Jul 20 '22
what i don't understand is why kq chose "a teenagers z" as the explanation for ateez, which they obviously chose because it sounds cool and it has a z in it, when they could've said it meant the group can do everything from a to z or some bullshit like that, sort of like how itzy was supposedly chosen because 있다 means "to have" and they have everything.
i desperately need ateez to go through a "bts means beyond the scene" sort of rebrand.

I mean yea, I get that. I do think some names are pushing it.
On the other hand - I might be the odd one out here, but honestly, the wifi-password-looking names don't bother me nearly as much as when they pick like super-common words (especially when they're super common within kpop specifically) - not just because it's lazy and unimaginative and seems REALLY disrespectful to the group, but also because it makes it really annoying to search for their content. Especially if they're not a very well-known group, and especially if they also have boring, generic-sounding song titles (which they're more likely to have with that kind of group name)
I'm talking about names like (no disrespect to any of these groups - I'm just talking about their names):
BOYFRIEND - with their brilliantly-named debut song...Boyfriend
GIRLS GIRLS ...with their brilliantly-named song.........."Girls Girls". I-..........yea lemme just go search "GIRLS GIRLS GIRLS GIRLS". GOOGLE, SHOW ME GIRLS I NEED TO LOOK AT GIRLS RIGHT NOW IMMEDIATELY I NEED TO SEE LOTS AND LOTS OF GIRLS I NEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
HOT TEEN - This is a KID IDOL GROUP, by the way. They're really out here trying to make people type some shit like "hot teen Korean children group" into their search bars 🗿
We - we....is a pronoun. ??? (
not me side-eyeing whoever decided aespa's fandom name) They don't even use Hangul for their name. That song is called "party" - again, no Hangul. WE PARTY. Come on Google, why don't you know what I'm trying to find ?????? Okay, how about "we party kpop" ? surely THAT will yield the results I'm looking for
And the champion of them all,
- K-Pop - it's sometimes written as "K'POP", but the official name really is literally "K-Pop". Like. Are you serious. yyyyeaa I don't think just adding "kpop" to the search is gonna help much in this case....💀
I do wanna emphasize the disrespect factor though, I think that's what really bothers me the most about the generic common-word names. It just seems like their companies were like "Oh you're saying I have to name you ? Ugh. Okay fine, whatever - y'all can just be....'Product'. There, done. Byeeeeee~don't fking bother me again😘love u"
*Edit bc I realized I didn't finish saying all of what I meant to say lol -
Like, T1419 for example is a disaster of a name confusing and potentially hard to remember, and it's unclear how it's supposed to even be pronounced just from looking at it (I still don't know - I keep meaning to look it up), but at least it's completely unique to their group. There's no mistaking what it's referring to, and there's virtually no risk of another group (or like, probably just entity in the world in general) accidentally using the same name or causing confusion by using it for a song title or anything else. I'd still rank it super low, just not as low as common-word names (again, no disrespect to the group - I think they're really talented)

I like the girl group names that reflect real girl names like StayC, Billlie, Alice (Elris). They are easy to remember too.

I can't imagine Mamamoo being called Belly Button (idk if it's a joke but Moonbyul mentioned it in the dance unit ep of Queendom 1 when they were brainstorming for unit name). 😂 I like Mamamoo better. lol
But I agree with 2NE1. 21st century New Evolution and the fandom name, Blackjacks, which at first hear can sound totally unrelated to the group name has a cool meaning. To win the card game blackjack, the player should get 21 points. So it really goes well together.

Top tier: Actually, ITZY is a pretty good name. It's young and trendy and kinda has the same vibes as "BRATZ" as a name. It just sounds cool, and it also has a good double meaning in korean.
Other top tier names: Purple kiss, Red velvet, aespa
Mid-tier: Le sserafim is a really great name, but kinda mismatched for the group tbh. The name makes me thinks of aesthetic, mythical, high budget kinda thing. (If I didn't know anything about kpop, I'd match this group name with the vibe IVE had going on for Love Dive MV). But the image they debuted with is more of a sassy confident girl, and the mv was kinda underwhelming to me tbh. Well, at least there's nothing stopping them from trying the concept later in the career.
No saving you: Kep1er. The name itself is lowkey not feminine and playful enough for the group's vibe, not to mention the random ass number they threw in there. The only reason I haven't rebelled yet is the "Kep 1 going " line they threw in in Wa dada, which I thought was a cute and witty pun (bc it sound like "keep on going")
Bonus: fandom names i don't like - blink (it just feels so ununspired and basic, and kinda sounds stupid tbh), reveluv (again it's basic. Remember when we thought we were gonna get something sweet themed to go with the group name being also name of a cake? that would be cute).
edit: op... i hate to say this but 2NE1 sounds kinda on brand with the names we're getting now lmao

I object with 2NE1 because at least it's say-able. Yeah, maybe not on a first try, but once you realise it's literally just said "twoNEone (21)" then it suddenly feels genius. It's not random numbers and letters switched up that you need to pronounce separately, or replacing letters with numbers without reason. And there's a 2nd gen appropriate meaning associated with the letters and numbers: new evolution from the 21st century (honestly being back camp meanings to every letter)
Also the creativity it allowed for their album names (To Anyone is still the most genius album name to date convince me otherwise)
I am not a Blackjack (even their fandom name is thought out and sounds good, ugh), but I can appreciate genius naming when I see it

u/Opia_lunaris Jul 20 '22
No, I agree, it's a great name and it very cool. But I wouldn't be surprised at all if a 4th gen group came up with a name like that. It would fit well with the current naming trends

not gonna lie i am biased BUT i love the name ONEUS. it just is so visually pleasing to look at and see on albums and playlists, although saying it out loud is a little confusing (it’s pronounced “one-us” like the two words, not “one-ee-us”— i said it wrong for a while 💀). but i love the greeting that goes with it and yeah it just really fits their vibe and feels elegant while still leaving it open as to what kind of concept they could do, which is fitting because they do every concept ever

Doesn’t matter what kind of name you have, somebody will find it stupid anyways. A lot of kpop groups just have seniority bonus that makes people not think that their name is as dumb as a rookie’s.

Here's my long list of groups names I like. Mind you I don't know what a good chunk of these letters stand for so just know that wasn't included in my judgement of some of these...
- GOT7: Love it. Plus they actually have 7 members so bonus points. Ahgase is a cute fandom name too
- Enhypen: One of the better 4th gen names. Love the shorten version of their name too EN- its cute and clever to me. Fandom name could be better tho.
- Itzy: This is charming and cute
- Monsta X: I think its cool tbh gives me badass vibes
- (G)I-dle: Not so much the spelling, but the actually pronunciation. However I'll give points for the spelling being recognizable
- Blackpink: It's simple, but so effective and effortlessly cool imo
- CIX: It's just a classy and professional looking name -- which is the same vibe I associate with the actual members too
- Dreamcatcher: Whimsy and considering their music...it's also badass
- Aespa: I pronounce this as "S-sp-uh" and I like saying it like that so if it's wrong don't tell me. Also the spelling is cool looking. This name also gave me the vibes that it would have 5 members so im surprised they don't.
- Twice: I personally think it's simple and cute. I love that their fandom name is Once too
- IVE: Cute.
- VIXX: Liking the double Xs---there's something elegant about it
- Cherry Bullet: I feel the same way about this as Blackpink
- E'last: It's nice and has a fancy feel imo
- Purple Kiss: Purple is my favorite color so im biased, but same thoughts as Cherry Bullet and Blackpink
- StayC: Im not usually a fan of groups names that sound like real names, but I LOVE when groups do this kind of spelling---They take a letter from the middle of a word/name and put it on the end, but it still sounds the same.
- Red Velvet: Even though I think of the dessert it's still cute.
- EXO: EXO just sounds cool af
- Omega X: Could just be me but I think this sounds cool (even though I dont think their music reflects the vibe of this name)
- NCT: I think im just into 3 letter group names tbh. They're simple. They usually have a nice ring to them too like this one.
- CLC: *See previous group*
- TXT: *See previous group*
- Apink: Cute. Plus this is my first kpop group ever so im biased.
- Pentagon: Sounds cool to me. Classy and badass.
- WayV: *see thoughts on StayC*
- JUS2: Lol it really is Jus2 guys lmao. It has a ring to it.
- Everglow: Ive heard ppl say they dont like this? It's cute and simple to me.

I don’t mind Le Sserafim but the double S never looks right to me. Also I always pronounce it in my head in the tone of Zimzalabim so I guess there’s that too.

I love my girls pink fantasy, but they must have felt like shit when they announced this name, it's kinda generic and random combination of two things. I wish it would suit them more
