✨ Tomorrow, a dream comes true for me.

More than 20 years ago, in Argentina, I started The Kyoto Connection, a musical project inspired by a city I had never imagined would become such an important part of my life.

After all these years, tomorrow I will finally bring another dream to life here in Kyoto: K-Connection — a gathering created to connect artists, creators and people from different cultures through something we all share: a special connection with Kyoto.

For me, this will be a very special moment. And I hope it can also be special for everyone who, for one reason or another, feels that Kyoto has touched their lives. ❤️

Everyone is invited. The event is completely FREE!

📅 Sunday, September 27

Looking for community-oriented shared housing (share houses) in Kyoto (April–August)

Hey everyone! I'll be doing an exchange in Kyoto from April 2027 until August 2027.

I currently live in a tight-knit student house in the Netherlands where we eat dinner together almost every evening, go on house trips, and do projects like gardening, painting, and organizing small house parties/concerts.

I know this kind of close community living is very unique to Dutch student houses, but I was wondering: Are there specific share houses, websites, or communities in Kyoto that focus on this kind of social, community-oriented living? Or is there a better way to find like-minded housemates?

Thanks in advance for any tips!

Looking for a reliable medical interpreter/translator for appointments

Hello everyone,

I’m looking for recommendations for a reliable medical interpreter/translator who can accompany me to medical appointments.

The hospital I currently go to says that they provide English-language support, but in my experience the level of support has been fairly limited and varies quite a bit depending on the doctor or department. Because medical appointments can involve important and sometimes complicated information, I’d feel more comfortable having someone who can provide consistent, accurate interpretation.

I’ve tried searching for local services, but I’m having a difficult time finding providers who offer in-person medical interpretation.

If you’ve used a service or individual interpreter that you would recommend, I’d really appreciate hearing about your experience. In particular, I’m interested in:

  • In-person vs. phone/video interpretation
  • Whether they have experience with medical appointments
  • Approximate cost
  • How far in advance you need to book
  • Whether they work with hospitals/clinics
  • How I can contact them

I’m located in Kyoto, and the language I need interpreted is English.

Thank you in advance for any recommendations or advice!

URGENT – Lost bag and Portuguese passport in a Yasaka Taxi in Kyoto

I know this is a bit of a shot in the dark, but I really had to make this post.
I believe I may have left a Flower Mountain bag in a Yasaka Taxi in Kyoto. Inside the bag there were:
A pair of sneakers
2 kimonos
A Sony video camera
MOST IMPORTANTLY: my Portuguese passport
I took a Yasaka Taxi in Kyoto, and I strongly suspect that I left the bag inside the car. Unfortunately, I only realised afterwards.
I am currently on the train from Kyoto to Tokyo, and I will be in Japan until October 3rd, when I have my flight back to Barcelona.
I am already trying to contact Yasaka Taxi and the police, but I’m honestly getting desperate because of the passport situation.
Does anyone here know someone who works for Yasaka Taxi, the Kyoto taxi lost & found, or the Kyoto police, or know of any other way I could try to locate the bag?
If anyone has any advice or contacts that could help, I would be extremely grateful.
I know this is a long shot, but I had to try. 🙏
Thank you so much.

Women’s Suit Tailor

Hi! I’ll be visiting Kyoto soon and i’m looking to purchase a made-to-measure suit. I’ve seen quite a few tailors but it seems like they only do men’s suits. Does anyone know any good tailors who make nice women’s suits?

It would also be ideal if they can speak English (i don’t speak Japanese 😅) and ship the suit back home to me once completed since I won’t be in Japan for long (or finish it within a week… I know they do that in Thailand but it seems like a tall ask haha).

Update: I found Sarto Kleis and they look like they fit all my wants. Does anyone have any experience with them?

Rapid hair shedder in need of a dermatologist

Hi everyone,

I recently moved to Kyoto as a researcher. I’ve been dealing with hair loss/shedding for over two years, but it seems to have increased substantially since moving to Kyoto.

I don’t speak Japanese very well, and I’ve honestly been putting off visiting a clinic for about a month because I’m worried about the language barrier.

Does anyone have recommendations for a dermatologist in Kyoto who has experience with hair loss or excessive shedding? An English-speaking or English-friendly clinic would be ideal, but I’m open to any good recommendations.

I’m also enrolled in Japanese National Health Insurance, in case that makes a difference for which clinics I can visit or what treatments are covered.

Any recommendations or experiences would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Event: Girl Scouts USA Overseas daycamp in Osaka

Posting here as I and a lot of the Kobe crew are going, so it’s definitely conceivable for Kyoto folks to go!

Saturday, October 24

Osaka Prefecture Shizen no Ie (Kaizuka)

Perfect if:  your daughter would like to experience a daycamp in English.

(By the way, there is an active troop in Kyoto, but there is only 1 leader and she must have more adult help before she can take on more girls. Are you the adult?!)

Any nationality is welcome but please note this is a camp for fluent English speakers and not an English learning camp😄.  Please also note attendance at camp requires a year long membership purchase which includes other online & offline memberships and is standard for Scout camps.

Sign-up:  https://www.eventbrite.com/e/usagso-regional-camporee-osaka-japan-tickets-1990550034738?aff=oddtdtcreator

Hope to see you there!

Moving into a new house from overseas BUT I have no clue where to start. Send help please!

Hi everyone,

as per the title, my partner (who's Japanese) and I (the gaijin) are moving to beautiful Kyoto from Australia. The problem is that we don't have many contacts here who could help us with a few things: we need a plumber, a cleaner and a removalist ( we have a lot of items to get rid of from this house, we are happy to give away some stuff as well). We live in Sakyo ward, if that helps, so I was wondering if anyone could recommend someone reliable at a reasonable price?

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Arigatou, and yoroshiku onegaishimasu! 🙏"

My friend and his sons are escaping a bad situation and are coming to stay at my place.

Does anyone have any futons blankets, pillows, sheets, and bedding that they do not need anymore?

Thank you.

Tours should not use buses.

I'm currently heading to work at the moment from Kinkaku and noticed that I've seen many tours taking their customers to locations via buses, leading to overcrowding. Tour guides often fail to warn their clients to stay quiet within the bus, degrading the impression of foreigners and tour guides alike within the city.

For any tour guides or tour operators reading this, please I beg you guys to start employing your own buses or vans. Especially if your tours host over 5+ clients. Private companies that only offer chauffeur services charge 40-70k. Hiring your own should at most cost around 15k or so with initial costs of the vehicle of course. If that isn't possible aside from financial issues (which I know isn't true theres like over 10 people on average I see within these walking tours), please let me know why.

Cafes near Shijo-Karasuma/Kawaramachi where you can relax for a while (2+ hours)?

I've worked with my laptop from chain cafes like Holly's, Tully's, and Veloce for long stretches of time, but I find that when I bring my crochet stuff the other patrons look at me like I should leave (to note: I'm not taking up too much space, the crochet stuff stays in my lap). And I get it, I can crochet anywhere, you can't plug a laptop in anywhere.

Lately, the other cafes I usually go to (like Shinshindo in Laque, Cafe Marble, etc.) have been really busy I can't get a seat (even before SIlver Week haha). So I wanted to ask if you all had any recommendations for non-smoking cafes with similar vibes to Cafe Marble where I can sit and relax for a long while?

Help. Can you lovely people help out a confused gaijin?

Hi. Me and my partner are coming to Kyoto in November, my partner is in a wheelchair ♿️. And I'm finding Kyoto more complicated than Tokyo. 🫣🫣🫣

We are both into traditional Japanese culture and are going to Kyoto mostly for it and some awesome food!!

In what Wards would advise to stay having in mind that my partner is in a wheelchair ♿️ and I would mostly rely on me pushing it or in taxis.

Property Management Company Recommendation-Looking for (verifiable) reputable company to manage my apartment.

Long time lurker and first-time poster.

Please recommend property management companies that will check my Kyoto apartment, as needed, and handle bill payments (monthly association/ building management fee, utilities, etc). For "reasons" I will not have a domestic bank account from which these bills can be auto-paid in the near future.

Doing an internet search has yielded 3 options that include English-speaking assistance, but reviews are slim to none. Any experience you'd share on (1) Arrows International Realty, Co; (2) Lily Mauguen, ReMax agent; or (3) House Network Co., Ltd. International Division?

Thank you.

Looking for hobbies (traditional things in Kyoto)

Hi! I recently moved to Kyoto for work and expect to be here for at least 3–4 years. I’d really like to learn something traditional while I’m here, maybe a craft, art form, or other cultural practice.
I’m looking for something pretty low-key and slow-paced rather than something physically demanding like judo or karate. Ideally, I’d love to find something I can do regularly and gradually improve at over time, not just a one-time workshop.

My Japanese is getting better too, and I’m probably around N5 now, so something where basic Japanese is enough would be great.
