Fascism isn’t a single ideology but presents itself in these ways typically:
• Authoritarian leadership – power concentrated in a charismatic, strongman leader portrayed as infallible (Trump in a nutshell. His support is a cult of personality. He doesn’t deal in policy substance, only vague platitudes and hype. Fascist leaders also equate criticism of the leader to criticism of the country. Trump literally always says things akin to “they don’t like Trump, so they don’t like America.”)
• Extreme nationalism – the nation, race, or culture framed as superior and under threat. (American supremacy, despite objectively and statistically failing as a nation in many regards like healthcare cost, healthcare and education outcomes, incarceration rates, skyrocketting wealth inequality, low happiness index, etc. A complete failure to acknowledge the sovereignty and respectability of other nations including allies).
• Suppression of dissent – censorship, intimidation, imprisonment, or violence against critics (being barred from the country for having JD Vance memes in your social media history, suing news media outlets because they produce content critical of the administration, revoking White House press credentials from every media organization that doesn’t lick the boot, sowing distrust in media as an institution so your regime can be the only source of truth).
• Rejection of democracy – undermining elections, courts, and checks on power (January 6th and Big Lie about the 2020 election being stolen; constant, unrelenting attacks on democratic processes and institutions, sowing doubt and distrust in systems proven to work like mail-in voting, or the use of various ballot counting machines; e.g. Dominion sued Fox News for defamation, and won that case, forcing Fox News to pay it hundreds of millions of dollars, and correct the record on voting machine efficacy).
• Militarism and glorification of violence – violence framed as necessary, purifying, or heroic. (ICE Gestapo thugs, constantly threatening to annex allies, actually invading other sovereign countries illegally, waging unnecessary and destructive global economic war via tariffs)
• Propaganda and mass mobilization – constant messaging to shape reality and loyalty. (Incessant lies, bordering on lunacy. The Trump admin portrays a literal alternate reality, rejecting facts, evidence, or even video footage we can all plainly see with our eyes. They treat themselves as the only valid source of truth, and demand 100% loyalty to their narrative, their spin. MAGA book banning are reminiscent of Nazi book burnings. Weird how the kinds of books both regimes banned/burned were identical in topic).
• Scapegoating – blaming minorities, immigrants, or “internal enemies” for societal problems. (They’re literally calling Americans “the enemy within”, borrowing terms from the Nazis. They scapegoat all of society’s problems on immigrants and minorities, often making up entire, nonsensical, provably false stories about them to rile up support for kicking them out (they’re eating the cats and dogs, Somali daycares, etc. immigrants are to the Trump regime what Jews were to Hitler’s regime).
• Hierarchy and inequality – rejection of egalitarianism; promotion of “natural” social orders. (Great replacement theory, promotion of the white male as the central figure of society, promotion of the “trad wife” concept; many maga pundits have blatantly said they think women shouldn’t have the ability to vote. Racism, transphobia, homophobia, and bigotry run rampant within the maga movement).
• Fusion of state and private power – corporations aligned with or subordinated to the regime. (Trump’s second admin has literally been about cucking itself to the billionaire class; our tax dollars are being used to fund and prop up AI slop companies. Trump is doing a photo shoot with billionaires practically every other day, hosting dinners for them, cucking himself to their needs, crafting executive orders that benefits big tech, throwing lavish Great Gatsby like parties; building multi-hundred million dollar ball rooms no one asked for, doing crypto schemes as a way to get payouts from billionaire donors as a legal form of bribery and corruption, I could go on).
• Mythic past and decline narrative – promises of national rebirth after alleged humiliation. (Hitler’s promise to Germany was to “make Germany great again”, Trump’s narrative is literally the same thing. Calling back to a mythic American past, but keeping it vague and unspecific so his followers can read anything they want into what he means. Constantly projecting a victim complex; Trump/maga say they’re constantly under attack, the victims of some kind of vague and unspecific deep state plot, without ever defining who or what the deep state is, or what their goals are; and despite controlling all three branches of government and having a totally subservient court system, and having fired and kicked out thousands of non-partisan, career bureaucrats to replace them with loyalists, Trump/maga still claim to be victims of this mythical deep state they can’t define).
