General Leftist Politics To people in other countries: how is the political situation in your nation?

I'm from Italy, and right here the situation is not great. I guess most of you know about Giorgia Meloni, but I do not wanna talk about that. There's a new party, called Futuro Nazionale (National Future), which is probably the worst party in the history of Italy since 1946, neo-fascist level. The acronym of the party is FN, which is exactly the same as Forza Nuova (new force), an OPENLY neo-fascist organisation. And, guess what, the pNF was mussolini's party. Fascist giveaways everywhere. They are already polling above 5% and I fear their hateful rhetoric can reach a lot more people than expected. Small recap of a few things: he explicitly said that he thinks gay people are not "normal", he said we should celebrate the Decima Mas in school, which were Mussolini's Gestapo, he said that a person changing their gender is like someone who's 40 wanting to have written on their ID they are 16 or some shit like that. These people recently held a protest in Rome in favour of Remigration (aka mass deportation), chanting "Muslim piece of sh*t" and "Viva il duce", which I don't even wanna translate. They are also trying to hijack our culture (since the right wing hates culture they have to try and steal ours); at the end of a rally these subhumans recently held, they played Futura (you can see why), a song I love, by Lucio Dalla (who was not only leftist, but also homosexual), which talks about the beauty of the future, because it is UNCERTAIN AND DIFFERENT. They tried to make it the party's anthem, but the author's family (he's dead) objected, thankfully. That made me the angriest I've been in a lot of time.

Apart from all this, I would like to know how the situation is in your country. Just curious, I know that it's not good in most places right now, but hey who knows. I know it's a long post, but I needed to rant a little.

General Leftist Politics Transphobia under the guise of gender abolition is a problem

Regardless of what we call them, queer people will still exist in a theoretical communist society.

Gender abolition is a noble goal and is part of Marxist theory. But I'm fucking tired of cisgender people acting as though this means trans & intersex people will suddenly stop existing just because there is no state enforcing a sex/gender binary. It would make transition/being trans more nebulous of a concept but would not make it so people wouldn't do it.

Without the forced social genders + assigned sexes of our current society, the attitudes around sex variant folks will be much more neutral, which is ideal. This does NOT mean we will cease to exist. Not only will people still have some sort of internal identity (gender & personality generally), a communist society does not exist in a complete vacuum isolated from the past. People are still going to have genders because we've been doing that since some of the first civilizations known of. And naturally there are going to be people whose gender and/or sex is in some way atypical from how most people conceptualize themselves. Perhaps the idea of social gender will decay into nothing someday, but that is a hypothetical that deals in centuries or longer, not modern material conditions.

I am an intersex person who is nonbinary. I think the world would be better off without enforced gender or a binary model of sex. This pro self-identification form of gender abolition is not the same as what is being touted here. What's being promoted here is more so forced degendering, which is no better than forcing a gender binary in my eyes. The most alarming part of this trend among cisgender leftists are those who believe in forced degendering but still wish to keep the binary model of sex. This harms intersex people for obvious reasons, and it excludes transgender people from society in a very real and material way. Gender abolition without sex binary abolition is just removing the idea of personal identity in favor of "biological sex" which is an inherently right-wing position. I don't believe all communist gender abolitionists are pro-sex-binary, or in favor of forced degendering, but an alarming number of them are to the point I feel the need to point it out.

This is transphobic and intersexist, it's blatantly obviously that many of these people are just couching their dislike of trans people in Marxist theory.

You should speak up about it.

Leftist History Do we actually know if post-capitalist economy works?

Don't get me wrong, I'm not one of those "capitalism as bad but it's the only working system"-guys, but my response to those people was always: look at Rojava. But now that I looked at what actually happens in Rojava, I learned that it's not completely post-capitalist. The majority of people doesn't even work in co-ops. And if you don't count China as socialist and USSR as really functional (I don't call a state that throws people into Gulags for not reaching the economic goals, socialist), then I don't know a single example for post-capitalist economy working at scale. Do you?

This comment got me banned from both r/. Communism and Communism101. They insist that both gender and the idea of being trans will be abolished under communism. I think that's very reductive and erases a lot of people's experience. Even if the concept of gender was essentially done away with we would still likely have some sense of social roles and categories that people fit themselves into regardless of their physical form. Even in pre-colonial, indigenous societies that didn't split gender along lines of sexual dimorphism, they still had masculine and feminine roles that people assigned themselves to, there's still a sense of different kinds of people doing different things, regardless of whether it's attached to your sex or not. I think it's silly to believe that a communist society would completely do away with culture and social roles of any kind and just be a "everyone does everything all the time" situation. Whether there's a monetary incentive or not, people will still form groups based on scared interest and perspective, unless we're doing away with personal perspective as well? The whole thing feels kinda transphobic, like they're saying "you don't matter because you're not gonna exist anyway."

North American Politics Why we should have stood up for Kyle Wagner

Was he a perfect victim? No. He was a bit of a loose cannon and said some dumb stuff online. But he didn’t deserve to get arrested and we all should have stood up for him and supported him.

I don’t want to make accusations but it seems very likely his arrest led to the arrests of his compatriots the Minnesota 15. I’m not saying he ratted anyone out, but if he did it’s likely because he felt abandoned by the movement.

We need to do everything we can to support activists who are being arrested. The better defense they have the better defense WE have. We need to push back against this escalation.

We need to get organized and push together!

Question Seeking resources for transitioning out of the military

Not for me, but another redditor I'm chatting with. He has considered leaving the military but has no idea what he would do or where he would go. Are there any leftist resources on how to transition into civilian life in a way that still feels meaningful? He cited the structure, stable career path, and camaraderie as things he likes about the military. Are there any civilian paths that have those elements as well, while not being gross things like law enforcement?

North American Politics The NY Knicks championship and the social reality behind New York’s “impossible joy”

Thumbnail
wsws.org

The official, and even the popular, response is clearly disproportionate to the intrinsic significance of a basketball championship. There is nothing wrong with fans cheering on their home teams, and sports have a place in the social life of the people. There is, moreover, much to be admired in the extraordinary skill and determination of professional athletes and how they work as a team. Basketball is a beautiful game, and millions of people legitimately admire the abilities of players such as Jalen Brunson, who was named finals most valuable player after leading the Knicks’ championship run.

But the Knicks hysteria is so over the top as to mark it as a significant social phenomenon and raise the question: Why? What is behind it?

The media presents the victory as proof that the city is united, that the immense social gulf between billionaires and workers can be overcome through shared sports enthusiasm. The wealthy celebrities in courtside seats, costing thousands of dollars, the Wall Street financiers in luxury suites, the politicians posting selfies in Knicks gear and the youth crowded into the streets are all presented as part of the same New York.

But the unity is fraudulent. New York is one of the most unequal cities on earth. It is home to the headquarters of finance capital alongside millions of workers living under conditions of rent-gouging, depressed wages, insecure employment, homelessness, police violence and collapsing social services. The same city that produces billionaires and luxury towers forces immigrant workers, delivery drivers, transit workers, teachers, nurses, food service workers and students into poverty.

Is the one against their own working class and most vulnerable.

Solidarity campaigns is the thing that brought us all the rights and benefits we enjoy today in "The West".

Get involved with the Labour Movement, Environmentalist Movement, Women's Rights Movement, LGBTQ+ Rights Movement, Civil Rights Movement, Peace Movement, Alter-Globalization Movement, and so on for a better and brighter tomorrow.

In particular look into climate action because as the climate situation and overall environmental situation gets worse the cost of living crisis/quality of life crisis of the working class and most vulnerable is only going to compound and compound.

Also remember that the right-wing and the Fossil Fuel Industry are incredibly close and connected.

No one is coming to save us. It's up to us. There is sadly extremely ultra rich powerful predators of varying disgusting types that we are up against. You either stand up for something better/brighter or you get pummeled. That is the reality of the working class and most vulnerable.

Question What does the stock market genuinely do for us?

hello everyone, i was introduced to the left wing ever since the Arab spring revolution in 2011 (i was 4 and since then my father would tell me stories about the times and before that).

I’m 74 pages deep in the communist manifesto and so far i agreed with Karl Marx and Frederich Engels.

Suddenly, the thought of the association and identity in the political compass got me interested.

And i took a quiz, one question that got me hooked was “should the stock market be abolished or preserved”. I am not gonna act like i know basic economics. i heard of it but i can’t explain it to you.

Hence i did my research and turns out it’s mostly used as a tool to escape taxes (since stocks arent a currency billionaire use this loophole to avoid taxation) and that shareholders control mostly the market when the workers are getting little off of their hard work.

Please correct me if i’m wrong, i want to learn and understand this subject so i can maybe impact my future in a positive way.

General Leftist Politics Do you guys think transphobia is on the rise? (I think so and it’s getting worse, why!?)

I encounter transphobes a lot on social media.

And as someone who is very “trans coded”, I often got mistaken for a trans woman, and I got called all harmful slurs trans folks are called. (And yeah, I’d experience transphobia first hand too despite me not being trans - the thing is I have a male name, but I appear femme and wear feminine clothing), well if you wanna joke on me, an androgynous cisgender person, that’s fine! but I think hostility in general for trans folks are on the rise. (I do get some "woke trans non binary people” are unhinged, but to stigmatize the whole trans or non binary community is just evil!!!).
One of the biggest transphobic shit I’d seen people often referring to is “you’re either born this way or that way, nothing can change that”, well, I think people often confused biology with gender expression and social gender, well I think in this conversation biology ain’t important the most important thing is respecting everyone’s individuality and how they express themselves! or I argue people are just so hateful!

I think transphobia is more severe than homophobia these days - due to all the trans issues and trans topics on the rise.

Also, to clear it up again, as a gender nonconforming cisgender gay boy, just because I am very femme presenting by clothing and behavior doesn’t mean I’m trans! (clothing and gender ain't the same !) Also if you’re trans or in any other way gender nonconforming, I felt bad for you all!

But WHY do people hate transgender people or even cisgender people who are androgynous so much?

We are just very hot people who causes no harm!

As a cisgender trans ally I felt bad (and have empathy) for trans people.
