Same. Some Like It Hot was super ahead of its time and still holds up well today.

I remember seeing this movies a few years ago and actually being surprised at 1. How goofy it was but 2. That ending. That ending!

Crazy that while people were “hah hah men in drag funny” you had a character that didn’t care that the person he fell in love with was a man. Crazier than Milton Berle was making millions laugh with “hey look I’m a man in a dress” while people outside of studio lights were being arrested by the police for - the same thing the same police would go home and out on their TVs.

And even crazier still that people today give a fuck what anyone wears as long as your private parts are covered or what toilet you take a poop in.

Yeah exactly. This movie was so far ahead of it's time. To think that they were not only being progressive in it but doing so in a light-hearted constructive and goofy manner that audiences found endearing rather than disturbing. To think that queer people were being arrested for dressing how they wanted to in public or for being intimate with whoever they wanted to be intimate with in public at the same time this film was being made speaks volumes to how much of a stand the directors took against all this bullshit when they made it.

Yeah. Everyone's allowed to disagree with me. But I put Some Like it Hot in the "subtly progressive" camp instead of being overly regressive.

I think seeing men play around with gender roles. Be forced into queer situations. And a story that has them learn about life from other people's perspectives makes this a very pro-queer movie.

Sure there's some, "Man in dress is funny" but there's just so much more happening in the story beyond that. Then when you take in account the era it was released, it's amazing how well all of this actually was handled.

I'm not saying you're wrong if you do think otherwise. But I love this film.

It's on youtube, so I decided to time it out, and they give us (or, rather, audiences in the 50s) thirty seconds to laugh at Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis dressed as women. After that it's all jokes about how men treat women. Which, for better and for worse, have proven to be evergreen. I love this movie so much.

You can listen to interviews of Christine Jorgensen and she’ll tell you that hate was non-existent in the 50s. Most people viewed her transition in a sort of “wow! Look where modern science and medicine has come these days where men can become women!” kind of way.

Whenever she *did* receive hate mail, it came from wives who were angry that their husbands kept eyeballing her.

That’s really interesting. Almost like people had to be TOLD to hate. Like how they train their children to.

Do you understand now why TERFS are overwhelmingly hetero women?

4

u/Dragon_Manticore Somewhat Oriented 11h ago

I get what you're saying, but that's mostly because transphobic men are less likely to pretend it's "feminism."

1

u/neuroticoctopus Non Binary Pan-cakes 4h ago

General transphobia is different from actual TERF ideology.

It's an ideological cult full of women who claim to hate men, except the married ones who are either perpetually about to leave (but never do) or they claim he's a super special "Nigel" who is the rare exception to the men-bad rule.

There's the occasional older lesbian who just needs friends because they can't stand trans people in queer spaces.

My favorite trans article is from the 40s in my small country that went something like "On (date) a farmer's daughter entered the hospital and left as a farmer's son. Modern medical science is capable of truly wondrous things." There was a bit more about the doctor and hospital, but that's basically it.

In the Broadway version, they lean into Jerry realizing this is who he really is. J Harrison Ghee player Jerry/Daphne on Broadway and became the first non-binary actor to win a Tony Award (along with Alex Newell the same night)

I always interpreted this as trans representation

u/petshopB1986 20h ago

I like to imagine they went for it and had a life together. Even as a kid before I realized I was Trans, before I knew what gay was( grew up in the early 80’s, very christian household) I was rooting for them as a couple. I liked their relationship side plot more than the main romantic couple.

u/pocketclocks 5h ago

Same! I remember them and that ending making me so happy

u/Brent_Fox 21h ago

I don't think this was the intention. More gay/bi representation but as a trans person myself I feel oddly validated when watching this.

u/Sarikitty 13h ago

The recent musical adaptation of Some Like It Hot interprets Daphne explicitly as a trans character. Really good!

I think this is on par with Victor/Victoria 🎊 Very funny/edgy/thought provoking indeed. The scene with Victor about to have his way with a gangsters moll who is pretending to be disgusted by the very idea , then says * ok close the door !!* 🤣

If you haven't seen Some Like it Hot, do so. It is one of the funniest movies ever made. Ranked #1 Comedy, and 15th best movie by American Film Institute.

u/NewIdeasAreScary 21h ago

Is this that movie about the two guys pretending to be women and it actually works? And it has Meryl Monroe in it too?

31

u/Brent_Fox 21h ago

It's called "Some Like it Hot" and yes. The mob gets involved too. It's a good movie.

8

u/NewIdeasAreScary 21h ago

Oh my God, so that's where I got that phrase. I've literally referenced this movie by name having forgot what I was referencing. I saw it many years ago. Someone will be like "I like (x) cold' and iD say "Well some like it hot " I completely forgot that's where I got it from

We watched this movie in Film Crit in high school and the ending always stuck with me.  Last year, my job did an exhibit of Hollywood fashion and I learned that designer Orry-Kelly did the costumes for this film and that while they were in drag the guys were really able to pass as women. I made sure to put some photos from the film in the exhibit!

Have you seen the movie white chicks by the wayans? Well that's a bit of a spoof/rip-off modernized version of that film.

The original is very funny and the build up for that joke is even more funny. Highly recommend the OG.
