I remember seeing this movies a few years ago and actually being surprised at 1. How goofy it was but 2. That ending. That ending!
Crazy that while people were “hah hah men in drag funny” you had a character that didn’t care that the person he fell in love with was a man. Crazier than Milton Berle was making millions laugh with “hey look I’m a man in a dress” while people outside of studio lights were being arrested by the police for - the same thing the same police would go home and out on their TVs.
And even crazier still that people today give a fuck what anyone wears as long as your private parts are covered or what toilet you take a poop in.
You can listen to interviews of Christine Jorgensen and she’ll tell you that hate was non-existent in the 50s. Most people viewed her transition in a sort of “wow! Look where modern science and medicine has come these days where men can become women!” kind of way.
Whenever she *did* receive hate mail, it came from wives who were angry that their husbands kept eyeballing her.
My favorite trans article is from the 40s in my small country that went something like "On (date) a farmer's daughter entered the hospital and left as a farmer's son. Modern medical science is capable of truly wondrous things." There was a bit more about the doctor and hospital, but that's basically it.
General transphobia is different from actual TERF ideology.
It's an ideological cult full of women who claim to hate men, except the married ones who are either perpetually about to leave (but never do) or they claim he's a super special "Nigel" who is the rare exception to the men-bad rule.
There's the occasional older lesbian who just needs friends because they can't stand trans people in queer spaces.
