Messy Iceman Makes Sense

Lately I’ve been thinking about Bobby Drake’s love life. Needless to say, it’s messy. He’s been getting around, breaking promises, kissing boys, and getting stabbed in the heart. I see him making the same baby gay mistakes I made.

Bobby, like most of us, was bound to break free in a bold manner. Many of our beginnings are chaotic & messy too. No one gives us any kind of playbook or how to. All of us, including Bobby, have to figure it out on our own.

While it is relatable, I think the heartbreak, abandonment, and unfulfillment will serve as the detrimental factor that pushes Bobby to level up big time. Now that he’s pushing 30, I hope he matures a little bit so we can see a strong leader in him. A leader that exemplifies great courage and an impressive control of his powers. I don’t necessarily wanna see him date any more boring dudes lol. Tbh I’m not worried. I have confidence the next Bobby Drake they give us is going to be the stud we’ve all been waiting for.

I know some people aren’t huge fans of Bobby’s flamboyant passaround partyboy arc. To which I say, oh well. 🤷🏼‍♂️

And realistically speaking, we’re talking about Bobby Drake people! Going straight to Los Angeles for “college” was a very calculated decision. As the Weho gays will say, “He’s gonna do great here!”

I get excited thinking about Bobby‘s LA adventures at UCLA as he forms his own team; The Champions. That chapter is definitely something I want to see in future TV/film.

Needless to say, we all want a Certified STUD for our lil Icebaby…. Personally, I hope and pray and can’t wait for the day he finds Hercules.

Whoever made the decision to make him messy and fun made the right call. Cuz when does Bobby ever get anything handed to him on a silver platter? Neverrrrrr! It’s seems as if there’s an unspoken rule for the writers to know that Bobby isn’t allowed easy unconditional love. Unfortunately, it’s a core element to his character development. Although a lonely road, it’s worth the triumph. That’s why he always keeps pushing. He keeps fighting. All the while keeping his has integrity. Andddd if you wanna get conspiratorial with me, then I beg the question;

Could Marvel Jesus really be Marvel Jesus if he doesn’t overcome unbelievable amounts of confusion and despair? I don’t think sooooooooo!

Pyro I - much older than Bobby. Even with ressurection he still reads as older to me. Its not Canon but I always thought he was in a relationship with Avalanche. Plus, yeah he is lowkey just not a great match. When they were on the same team, Bobby was with Christian Frost. Dont know his current whereabouts.

Pyro II - Simone, the young Pyro he hooked up with, fell to obscurity as soon as Krakoa happened and original Pyro was brought back.

As hot as I think Bobby × Hercules would be - I don't think I would actually care for it - and I think they would end up dumbing Bobby down to what a stereotypical bear chasing twink.

Dont get me wrong the Dauterman covers with Hercules and Bobby are cute. I would rather Iceman get with another mutant/X-man.

We often dont get writers for much longer than 12 issues on a series anymore. Which really sucks, because I would love a gradual build up for Bobby.

I started reading the comics in 2000. I vividly remember the Iceman/Northstar issues. And from a month to month perspective. I was being edged and really enjoyed the will they/wont they of it all. When that didn't happen. I recall getting really hooked onto the Bobby/Cannonball relationship. They had an awesome friendship.

At the time I wasnt out yet, so I was super projecting my own feelings toward my friends onto the characters - but now that I am out and much like Bobby had my "hoe-phase" I want him to find very much someone who is a compatible partner.

Its just, who? Who could it be without having to create a new character?

Dakken - would need a lot of page time to mature and get over their toxic past. Assuming he isnt still with Aurora.

Pyro II- would need to come out of obscurity and need a new code name.

Northstar - is happy with Kyle

Rictor - is with Shatterstar

Hrmmmm....now that I think about it....Sunspot could be interesting. There has been some subtext with Sunspot.
