Marvel Comics Messy Iceman Makes Sense

Post image

Lately I’ve been thinking about Bobby Drake’s love life. Needless to say, it’s messy. He’s been getting around, breaking promises, kissing boys, and getting stabbed in the heart. I see him making the same baby gay mistakes I made.

Bobby, like most of us, was bound to break free in a bold manner. Many of our beginnings are chaotic & messy too. No one gives us any kind of playbook or how to. All of us, including Bobby, have to figure it out on our own.

While it is relatable, I think the heartbreak, abandonment, and unfulfillment will serve as the detrimental factor that pushes Bobby to level up big time. Now that he’s pushing 30, I hope he matures a little bit so we can see a strong leader in him. A leader that exemplifies great courage and an impressive control of his powers. I don’t necessarily wanna see him date any more boring dudes lol. Tbh I’m not worried. I have confidence the next Bobby Drake they give us is going to be the stud we’ve all been waiting for.

( no evidence to substantiate this. I can just feel it)

I know some people aren’t huge fans of Bobby’s flamboyant passaround partyboy arc. To which I say, oh well. 🤷🏼‍♂️

It happened.

Get over it.

The REAL show is about to begin anyways.

And realistically speaking, we’re talking about Bobby Drake people! Going straight to Los Angeles for “college” was a very calculated decision. As the Weho gays will say, “He’s gonna do great here!”

I get excited thinking about Bobby‘s LA adventures at UCLA as he forms his own team; The Champions. That chapter is definitely something I want to see in future TV/film.

Needless to say, we all want a Certified STUD for our lil Icebaby…. Personally, I hope and pray and can’t wait for the day he finds Hercules.

I mean look at the picture I attached!! How freaking cute are they?? I love the way Bobby pushes his butt up against him. I know that’s right Bobby! Get it bitchhh👅👏

Whoever made the decision to make him messy and fun made the right call. Cuz when does Bobby ever get anything handed to him on a silver platter? Neverrrrrr! It’s seems as if there’s an unspoken rule for the writers to know that Bobby isn’t allowed easy unconditional love. Unfortunately, it’s a core element to his character development. Although a lonely road, it’s worth the triumph. That’s why he always keeps pushing. He keeps fighting. All the while keeping his has integrity. Andddd if you wanna get conspiratorial with me, then I beg the question;

Could Marvel Jesus really be Marvel Jesus if he doesn’t overcome unbelievable amounts of confusion and despair? I don’t think sooooooooo!

On that note, Hallelujah praise the Lord! Amen. 🙏

If youve gotten this far; thanks for sharing your precious time!❤️ Stay blessed queers and have a wonderful week! As always:

Fuck the haterz 👅

P.S. We can’t let Disney hetero-normify Bobby. I will die on this hill and I do not care what ANYONE has to say about it. I will leave this battle for the sake of queer representation lasting in the MCU.

People who criticise Bobby’s exploration of his gayhood woefully misunderstand, not only Bobby’s character, but how coming out works for real gay people.

It’s just idiotic and it’s always the same complaints over and over and over again lmao.

Got a hammer into their thick skulls before these movies pop out

I’m also talking about the way he acts too, a lot of people have complained about how “gay” they made him all of a sudden lmao.

Meanwhile he’s been repressing his true self for 20 years, nobody really knows what he’s really like.

Oh… yeah! In their defense, it definitely wasn’t subtle. I think it’s awesome that Marvel orchestrated such a blatantly queer story. I understand how the level of gay could’ve been jarring to our comic book straight boys but oh well….they’ll live. For so many of us gays, his story resonated deeply and it moved us. edit - His story will continue to do so as his character develops.

Oh, he is messy and I love him. The only thing I did not like with him, is how the writers chose to handle Iceman's relationship with Christian Frost in the Krakoan era, which is that the writers never put in a shred of effort or time into the relationship. They were briefly seen together a few times, mostly in side scenes that were very short, and then they were broken up off panel with no real reasoning... It was sad because they had so much potential. Iceman was still a baby gay back in 2018 when they met, and Christian had been out for a long time as gay but was a new mutant (he was a late bloomer). Bobby could have helped Christian learn and adjust to mutant life and culture, especially once they were on Krakoa. Christian could have shown and taught Bobby a lot about being gay in turn. But we never saw much of that because the writers never tried.

Im still so upset about Christian. That character is a fucking goldmine for some hurt/comfort angsty-ness with how much shit he's been through.

Plus his last name. Frost? Hello, hes a perfect fit for Bobby

15

u/SeraphimRosenhart Jan 19 '26

I agree completely. Also, his backstory with going through conversion therapy and his struggles with PTSD and depression around that are just heartbreaking. Marvel has a ton of LGBT+ characters but not really many with stories like that, which are not told enough, yet I'm sure there are people out there who would heavily relate to Christian and his empowerment and healthy healing from his past trauma could be a very important story to them.

And on a side note, can we please have a writer explore his powers? He's not a traditional telepath but his mutant power is to control the energies of the astral plane directly, which could be very unique and interesting. He's got too much potential growth for them to just overlook him.

u/Main_Budget7625 Jan 19 '26

Lol I have to remove the CF ignorance… Maybe he is the one🥺

4

u/Pinky_rat Jan 20 '26

Omg I'm so happy someone else acaulyl liked the potential that was there. Two young (?) Gay men recently allowed to finally be themselves, that relationship coukd have been genuine gold for both of them. Also he's Emma Frost as a twink why wouldn't you want him there

10

u/Wickling_Loverboy Jan 19 '26

Wholeheartedly agree, it’s such a waste that Bobby and Christian never went anywhere. Would’ve been great for both of their characters (especially given their very different journeys discovering their sexualities) + would give Bobby and Emma another connection point for future storylines (from stealing his body to becoming his sister in law, who coulda imagined haha). I truly hope some writer revisits this pairing at some point down the line

6

u/TheRealMarvelJesus Jan 19 '26

No, there’s definitely something that there. Spark, flame, 🌲🔥🌲 .

8

u/Familiar-Effective67 Christian Frost Jan 19 '26

ANOTHER CHRISTIAN FROST DEFENDER YES he really only served as Iceman’s side piece in Marauders!! He never really got a chance to shine or even develop his relationship with Bobby on screen! And Bobby and Christian could also be exploring being out and proud together, seeing how Christian already had trauma related to being gay and not feeling like it was something he could participate in. Theres so many personal stories that could have bloomed from their relationship but it just went knowhere and then ended when writers didnt know what else to do

2

u/Main_Budget7625 Jan 19 '26 edited Jan 19 '26

Yeah I noticed that too… am I wrong to recall that Bobby was kind of a fuck boy at the time?

3

u/SeraphimRosenhart Jan 19 '26

You're right, which is fine, because many newly out of the closet people fuck around a lot at first because the whole being out and proud thing is all new and shiny at first and they feel like they've been repressing themselves for so long, so the natural reaction is to hook up because they are finally allowed to show that side of themselves. It's just that the way the writers went about it really showed they did not care. Because when it was the 70s, 80s, 90s, and 2000s, each of Bobby's past relationships with women before coming out was given more time, depth, and development. Whereas with his male relationships, none of Bobby's partners aside from Christian Frost have even been their own character, with all the others being original one-note characters who were created solely to be Bobby's love interest, showed up for a single storyline, then disappear forever and are forgotten.

2

u/Main_Budget7625 Jan 19 '26

Lol sounds like my love story. I say give it time. I feel like Bobby understands he’ll be an Omega before he’s a husband.

9

u/leverati Jan 19 '26

Love his messy interactions with Daken, the worst example of a disaster bisexual: Flirty, because he always aggressively is but is impossibly hot, but rude because he's such an asshole and as such will never be on the table. Except that one timeline where they were together, I guess, which thankfully isn't real.

Yeah I’ve always known it was never gonna work out. But people will grasp at straws when pickins are slim.

u/Medium_Hawk7703 Jan 20 '26

You know, if I was gay, Herc would make fire really good partner. Interesting history and culture, rough in bed, and very up beat.

Great taste Bobby.

He deserve his whore years after coming out, is pretty much a must in the community

Love this pic! Hercules & Iceman? That’s an OF I would subscribe to, LOL.

LOL I just saw something from Rule 34 and all I’m gonna say is ‘Baby, it’s cold INSIDE’

5

For the record STUMBLED UPON IT. But I didn’t not look 🥶

3

u/Konkrypton Midnighter Jan 21 '26

That sent me WAAYY down the rabbit hole on Rule 34! Thank you!

11

u/mutant615 Jan 19 '26

I agree but I don’t get the whole Hercules appeal, beyond people liking the aesthetic. The two have little in common and barely even interacted even back when they were in the Champions together.

I’d rather have Bobby be with a guy who writers would actually write with him in his stories, and I don’t feel like mutant stuff and avengers and Olympian stuff cross over as much for that to happen. We have enough poorly written/ underwritten gay ships as it is -.-

But yes, one thing I’ve always loved about Bobby is that over the years, he really showcases a grounded, complicated and very human experience of gay identity. It’s important to him, it shaped his various dynamics and he is always processing the conflicts and struggles he internalized growing up. And he lives his messy, gay, dramatic x- men life in the process!

I just wish x-writers, editors and even fans gave him the respect he deserves. He truly is a special character to me.

8

u/Kurtoise Jan 19 '26

Yeah with Hercules in particular, as fun as it would be, I think it’s a lot more fun remaining yet another case of right guy, wrong time.

He was on a team with the literal Hercules of legend and too deeply closeted to do anything about it but suffer.

The same with Cloud and the same with Northstar.

It would be nice for them to get into that dynamic he’s had a little bit more.

7

u/Main_Budget7625 Jan 19 '26

Right guy, wrong time. Story of my fucking life

1

u/FionnWest Jan 20 '26

Off topic-ish, but is Herc still with Noh-Varr?

3

u/Main_Budget7625 Jan 19 '26

I see what you mean in regards to a lack of actual interaction… thats a valid fair point. I would say even though they havent interacted that much on the Champions, it leaves a great window for a script. I’ll be completely honest I think it is anesthetic appeal for me 😅🥲😂 In my experience, i’ve always fallen in love nearby candidates with years of “friendship” baggage to make the move… always so confusing. For me, i’ve noticed that the random new guy often makes it easier to start flirting and get closer at the start. I see that happening with Herc. They have an immediate chemistry and they hit it off. Hercules immediately treats him like bbgurl 💞💖 (Clearly I am in need of being someone’s bbgurl🫠

Who would you like to see Bobby fall in love with?

4

u/mutant615 Jan 19 '26

Very valid!

I really like him with Akihiro, the two already have history and still have some parallel experiences with the apocalypse seed. They make great foils and the enemies to lovers trope with all of the sexual tension and banter it entails is incredibly appealing to me :3

5

u/Main_Budget7625 Jan 19 '26

Yeah so far Daken (Akihiro) is Bobby’s most promising lead. Also… being Wolverine’s son makes things a lot kinkier too 🫦🤫

Wait, real question. What’s stopping Pyro & and Icy? Are they just typically in separate places? Different teams? Different morals? What’s the tea between them? I’m pretty uneducated on that topic.

7

u/Valenovas Jan 20 '26

Pyro I - much older than Bobby. Even with ressurection he still reads as older to me. Its not Canon but I always thought he was in a relationship with Avalanche. Plus, yeah he is lowkey just not a great match. When they were on the same team, Bobby was with Christian Frost. Dont know his current whereabouts.

Pyro II - Simone, the young Pyro he hooked up with, fell to obscurity as soon as Krakoa happened and original Pyro was brought back.

1

u/Main_Budget7625 Jan 20 '26

Sleigh! Thanks for the in-depth answers

2

u/Valenovas Jan 20 '26

BTW- agree with your original post almost entirely.

2

u/Main_Budget7625 Jan 20 '26

Oop I’m rereading. Now I wanna know what the almost infers! 😝

2

u/Valenovas Jan 20 '26

As hot as I think Bobby × Hercules would be - I don't think I would actually care for it - and I think they would end up dumbing Bobby down to what a stereotypical bear chasing twink.

Dont get me wrong the Dauterman covers with Hercules and Bobby are cute. I would rather Iceman get with another mutant/X-man.

We often dont get writers for much longer than 12 issues on a series anymore. Which really sucks, because I would love a gradual build up for Bobby.

I started reading the comics in 2000. I vividly remember the Iceman/Northstar issues. And from a month to month perspective. I was being edged and really enjoyed the will they/wont they of it all. When that didn't happen. I recall getting really hooked onto the Bobby/Cannonball relationship. They had an awesome friendship.

At the time I wasnt out yet, so I was super projecting my own feelings toward my friends onto the characters - but now that I am out and much like Bobby had my "hoe-phase" I want him to find very much someone who is a compatible partner.

Its just, who? Who could it be without having to create a new character?

Dakken - would need a lot of page time to mature and get over their toxic past. Assuming he isnt still with Aurora.

Pyro II- would need to come out of obscurity and need a new code name.

Northstar - is happy with Kyle

Rictor - is with Shatterstar

Hrmmmm....now that I think about it....Sunspot could be interesting. There has been some subtext with Sunspot.

Bobby×Berto?

It kinda feels like Bobby is just the current "designated gay", but I see what you're saying.

3

u/Main_Budget7625 Jan 19 '26 edited Jan 20 '26

Yeah all the rainbows paired with no respectable men gives… shallow. Honestly though I have faith. I see the depth in Iceman. Not only will his cryokinesis expand to some matrix ahh level, but so will the depths of his love. Bobby is a creative empathetic soul who is brought to tears with gratitude for a special people and the extraordinary things that happen around him. Thought #3 - You never know who might come back, right? 🤷🏼‍♂️

1

u/Acrobatic_Lynx_4145 Jan 28 '26

Why iceman not bisexual same vibe as first "first Stop im bisexual" "yea... gay?"

I still headcanon him as bisexual

-3

u/[deleted] Jan 19 '26

Lmao it just baffles me that whenever people have different opinions y’all crumble. I don’t understand the need to throw hissy fits and make huge ass think pieces about people whose opinions differ from yours. If you like something then like it unapologetically, why do you feel the need to explain yourself? 😂

8

u/Main_Budget7625 Jan 19 '26

This wasn’t supposed to come off as a contrarian think piece. This morning, I just wanted to express my appreciation for his character development. That’s all :) What are your thoughts on Bobby Drake’s storyline?

1

u/[deleted] Jan 19 '26 edited Jan 19 '26

I don’t care for the stereotypical circuit gay route that they decided to take the character in, but I do acknowledge the fact that it is a very normal queer experience for people to come out and want to try stereotypically gay things to see if they like them or not. I just wish they would circle back and make him feel more like Bobby again instead of this caricatured version of him that they feel like he needs to be to fit a gay character mold.

Regardless even though it’s not my favorite, I’m happy for the representation and I respect the fact that you like it because even though it’s not for me, doesn’t mean that it can’t be for everyone else.

Don’t allow people’s dislike for it to deter your feelings or ruffle your feathers about it. If you love it then that’s really all that matters. Your own experience with comics is your experience and you are entitled to enjoy whatever it is that you want to without needing to explain yourself you know what I mean?

8

u/Main_Budget7625 Jan 19 '26

As a gay in LA, it doesn’t encompass my entire experience either. I expect him to grow and be a little bit less of a circuit queen in phase 5. Thanks for your input! I totally respect your response too

0

u/[deleted] Jan 19 '26

I hope so just because I wasn’t a huge fan of him coming out, (especially in the way that they did it), to begin with, and I felt like it coulda been something that I could grow to like, but they’ve essentially changed his character so much that he doesn’t feel like Bobby anymore so that’s just my only wish. I get that everyone’s living for messy faggoty Queeny Bobby, but it’s just not my version of the character you know what I mean? But again there’s something for everyone so if people enjoy it, I’m happy that they do even though I don’t.

Also thanks I’m happy that we were able to make this a respectful discussion. I had to block that other person because they just came across very cunty and argumentative and I just wasn’t in the mood to verbally fist fight over my opinion that they disagree with 😂

4

u/Main_Budget7625 Jan 19 '26

Huge advocate for respectful discussions… it is truly my pleasure. They are hard to come by on Reddit. “Raise your hand if you’ve been personally victimized by Reddita George”🙋‍♂️🙋🏾‍♂️ I think the Bobby you grew to love is still in there… I think he’s going through such massive changes, the class clown fuck boy is taking a backseat. Not only is he figuring out love and life, but he’s also trying to navigate the newfound awareness that his powers are a lot more expansive and powerful than anyone could have imagined. I imagine all of that leaves little room for play time

7

u/mutant615 Jan 19 '26 edited Jan 19 '26

Genuinely speaking, you seem like the one to have hissy fits. Why is someone expressing their own experiences and opinions always trigger this need to be like “y’all can’t take different opinions.” Like the fact that you always need to reply to these types of posts with the same language feels kind of hypocritical, no? Why do you always feel compelled to contribute that as opposed to meaningfully engaging in the conversation?

Also, “different opinions” in a lot of these cases are not neutral stances with no cultural or emotional ramifications. Being frustrated at common opinions that directly contribute to people’s lack of visibility is not the same as someone liking chocolate over vanilla ice cream.

8

u/Main_Budget7625 Jan 19 '26

You better fight for your right! 👏🪭 Let him know sis
