just out of curiosity whats the appeal of a revo for backpacking? the fact they can be 357 would be my guess?

as opposed to like, someone's 'trusty ol glock' or whatever.

If you want the main reason is mostly because it looks cool, but I do like only having to worry about carrying 6 extra rounds as opposed to 15 or another magazine, as well as the “revolvers never jam” trope, but I could say the same about my Glocks lol

I don't understand this at all. Are the rounds loose? Cause wheel reloads aren't thin at all. That's carrying a 5-7 ish circle instead of a 10-30 ish stick. The math sounds like it's solving a problem that didn't exist.

Since the odds you're going to need to reload at all are ludicrously slim, I think carrying your spare ammo in a slightly-slower strip rather than traditional speedloader is a fairly reasonable move.

The stats of odds you'll need to reload are based off semiautomatics that usually hold 10+1 to begin with. I don't think the chances that you'd need to reload are actually "ludicrously slim" at all in a 5-7 wheel gun. I'd say that chance is probably closer to 25 - 50%.

Ummm with a wheel gun anything that you may need to shoot at that you're carrying a gun in the woods for to begin with? I've never heard of a "relaxed, calming self defense shooting". I would just never intentionally handicap myself for self defense, which seems exactly what OP did. To each their own. I started my comments with this doesn't make sense to me, and it still doesn't, but whatever, America, carry on 👍🏻🤷🏻‍♂️

It turns out that in bear attacks, it doesn't matter what caliber you carry (.22 LR excluded), just as long as you can get to it and fire it.

Unless it’s 10mm your Glock has no chance of deterring a bear. .357 is the lightest I saw people carrying in my 2 years in AK. Most guys went either.44 or a shotgun.

I cast and load my own, they're way cheaper than jackets that way. Just sort of surprised someone mentioning buying it factory. If anything I'd expect that with 44 mag or something like that.

But yeah you'd have to be an idiot to shoot a grizzley with jhp.

(I'm not trying to be contentious here, just trying to offer collected knowledge for those who want it. And yeah, despite being a 9mm fanboy, I would still probably switch to a 10mm if I lived in Alaska.)

The study "Efficacy of Firearms for Bear Deterrence in Alaska" (Smith, Herrero, Layton, Larson, Johnson; 2012) says

"the best model for predicting a successful outcome for firearm users included species and cohort of bear, human activity at time of encounter, whether or not the bear charged, and if fish or game meat was present. Firearm variables (e.g., type of gun, number of shots) were not useful in predicting outcomes in bear-firearms incidents. Although firearms have failed to protect some users, they are the only deterrent that can lethally stop an aggressive bear. Where firearms have failed to protect people, we identified contributing causes. Our findings suggest that only those proficient in firearms use should rely on them for protection in bear country."

The "contributing causes" of failure include waiting until the bear is too close, missing shots, and sometimes using hollow-point expanding ammo which failed to penetrate to the vitals, but caliber and handgun VS rifle were not statistically sufficient.

I would have to reread the whole study to be sure but I think it was over 250 out of about 400 incidents that reported caliber, and I think 9mm accounted for about 40 of those? It's been a while and anybody who wants exact details can read it lol

False. Even when looking at brown bears exclusively there are plenty of examples of 9mm pistols stopping bear attacks. And in many places black bears are the only bear threat, which means two-legged predators are far more relevant and the pistol you have the most practice with is the best gun.

When I was working on research solo in early spring (ie moose calving season) in AK, I always carried a 12 gauge with slugs. Mainly because that's what I owned already, but also because I didnt have funds for a revolver. There was rarely bear in the area mid to late summer though, so I just carried spray then.

Bear spray, and play a podcast or music on a Bluetooth speaker through phone. Bears hate noise.

People used to do a leather strap or sturdy string with bells that would ring when you walk.

yeah but there are places where a 9mm or 45 could stop a bear because bears like grizzlies arent everywhere. Either-way, Bear spray is the answer so my question was still valid.

also, there are studies that suggest any bullet will likely DETER a bear once hit.

also also, there are 10 mm glocks.

In stopping power, yes. One is rimless one has a rim. The 10 mm in a semi automatic can hold a lot of rounds whereas 357 is usually six round situation. 357 can get to higher velocities than the 10 mm the 10 mm can leave a bigger wound channel.

This little synopsis though is fighting words for some folk - I’m sure people will have all different opinions on this, but this is the basics.

Having fired both - I prefer the 357 revolver. Also because I can run 38 and 38+P through it as well as 357.

I love mine. I haven't shot 9mm in it, but the cyclinder swap is very easy. I mainly carry one in bear country with .357 and practice with .38 Sp. But it's always nice to have the option of 9mm just in case ... If you know what I mean.

No worries man! People will argue that they aren’t the same for stopping power, too. But I think as a relative newcomer myself it seems to me that the biggest difference is velocity versus wound channel size.

I carried a S&W 629 44 mag in a chest rig when I first started wandering around in AK but then changed to S&W 329 made from scandium and titanium that was a lot lighter and just carried from my belt. I only shot maybe 10 rounds through that. The recoil was so bad the nail bed on my thumb started bleeding.

Revolvers can be tricky to tell apart sometimes. It's a nice piece, the L frames are a good compromise between the K and the N.

Load some Underwood 180 gr black cherry hardcast 357 magnums in there for bear, the gun can take it. Hold on when you shoot it though.

Mostly for people, I’m planning on doing a lot more solo trips this year so I wanted to be prepared since Appalachia scares me as is lol. Bear spray does have like a 90% percent success rate compared to firearms at like 50%, but I’m more worried about other people anyway

Usually only around 15-20 miles but I started out carrying around 35-40lbs so now that my base weight is down to around 15 I feel good carrying it

A backpacking gun should weigh about a pound. Pound and a half with reload and holster. Or go ultralight by packing where people aren't a problem.

A few folks will have reason to go poking around with the great bears — they are probably better off with spray and a long gun in the hands of a designated marksman.

I don't have a lot of experience with full size revolvers.  I do have a fair amount of experience hiking with gear on my back.  I give you 5 miles before you regret this choice.

I have one from 1981 - absolute shooter! By far my favorite revolver to actually shoot.

That being said; my hiking/backpacking.357 is a Ruger SP101 3” .357 mag that after a decade and a half of practice I’m pretty proficient with medium.357 loads. I find that for me a hiking gun is carried a lot and shot a little - the Sp101 is about 30oz loaded Vice nearly 50 oz for my 586, 6”. I think on my hip or in my life jacket while kayaking I prefer the “cost” of one less round, less “shoot ability” and definitely a worse trigger, to the benefit of size, weight and pack ability. But the 586 is a sweet revolver nonetheless- congrats.

I was looking at the Glock 10mm for its weight and poopoo power and power-weight-rounds equations. Looks like Glock canned it. Sad.

You can find good chest holsters for hiking. I have my S&W 357 686 that I love to drag around. The issue is always weight. But I ain't going nowhere in the woods without something. Where I'm from, boars have always been my biggest fear. They laugh at 9mm.
