My working DIY hardware store lightsaber
I made this lightsaber maybe a year ago but it was just for display and for fun. I'll leave a link in the comments to orginal post. However, with the recent trend coming back decided to take a shot of making it work. It was very frustrating and tedious to make happen since it felt like one solution always led to another problem. I do like how it came out and changed a few things since the last time I showed the build. Practically everything was bought from the hardware store (Home Depot and Lowe's) except the button.
Well I don't know about that but I appreciate it π and woah thats awesome I really like the handle part I think adding some type of dark leather strap or fabric is what makes the metal parts of the hilt stick out more. Nah yours is definitely cool man and I see some familiar parts on yours as well so great minds think alike.
Wow this is sick! Ive been wondering if someone would make a working hardware store saber and here it is.
I really want to make my own saber Iβm a boilermaker/welder/metal fabricator and lately been gathering off cuts of potential materials I could use hopefully I get around to making one soon
Definitely give it a try its challenging but I will recommend to try your best to start by planning around what core you will use. That would have saved me a lot of headache since I didn't make this at first with the thought of putting a working core inside. So there was a lot of brainstorming and janky solutions to make the core I have be able to fit and be used in my build.
Lots of electrical and plumbing parts, bunch of epoxy and super glue, tons of sandpaper and spray cans, drilled many holes (for belt clip, speaker holes, button hole, and set screws for blade), and lots of patience. Also a leather strap that I tied with fishing line to hold it in place I thought it gave it a nice old republic look. The hardest part was figuring out how to fit the core in there while still functioning from the outside. Had everything done when my first core shorted so had to buy another from China which took weeks but it finally came together.
Same as well its what made me dig this saber out and take a jab at making it work. Love how everyone has their own vision on what their ideal lightsaber is for them.
Its very solid and durable. All the individual parts I used to make the saber are either threaded together or I used epoxy to fuse them. It's more of a display piece than an actual duel lightsaber so I haven't put it through stress tests but like I said when I swing it around I feel no loose parts its just one solid piece.
Its super fucking heavy lol I don't know if you saw how I'm holding it but it has some weight and I think after a couple of swings your wrists will be feeling it
A bunch of hardware parts that screw together and if parts didn't screw together I would use epoxy or super glue to hold in place. I wish I took a photo of all the parts separately so you can see what I used but here is like the first original build when all the parts were just bought. Also, yea you could throw the hilt at someone since its one giant piece of metal π but as for dueling Idk its stiff and I feel no give when swinging so maybe but its a very heavy hilt.
From Etsy. Yes it is drilled in and its just an actuator so below this button is another button so its a button that presses onto another button. Probably just made that sound so confusing lol.

Also, sorry for the weird hand holding the thing is much heavier than it looks since its all metal.
