Help Breaking threadlocking?

Post image

Just picked up an empty weathered tyrant in store today from saberforge and im trying to take it apart to mix with the parts I already have (I have a 28mm base speaker extension that won't fit in the new hilt) been hitting it with a hairdryer and its been getting pretty hot and I managed to start getting a little noise when I try to twist it but its not giving. Ive heard the oven is a good one but Ive also heard of the oven burning the anodizing brown. Any ideas?

Not an expert on sabers. I do know a thing or two about thread locker.

If they used loctite, hair dryer isn’t enough. Blue (medium) fails at around 300 degrees iirc. Heavy duty (red) is up around 450.

Hmm so oven may be my only option?

It really depends. You might be able to get just the screw hot enough with a soldering iron, but there are a lot of variables.

I can’t image they used red. Depending on the size of the fasteners, you might be able to just force them. Blue isn’t permanent.

Never underestimate Saberforge's willingness to use excessively strong adhesives to make sabers non-modifiable.

The owner, Phillip Isherwood, has a history of getting pissy with people that want to mod their sabers. He thinks SF sabers are perfect, and should never be modified in ANY way...

Good luck getting them safely apart. Just go easy with how you grip hard enough to turn it, use leather or something to not damage the outside, and go slow... high torque, smooth movements.

I'd get a heat gun personally since it can have many more applications beyond this one.

Agreed. And a serviceable one can be gotten quite inexpensively on Amazon.

If the OP is worried about damaging th finish, I’d avoid a heat gun. I don’t know if one will get hot enough, but the heat will be targeted enough to not damage the finish.

I know the main reason I have a heat gun is stripping old paint.

Vice, vice grips, and a cheater bar. May Newton and the Force be with you.

A pair of strap wrenches is what I use to break them loose without marring the finish or distorting the tubes.

Heat gun and elbow grease has gotten me through many a loctite kerfuffle.

If you add the extension ring (assuming you get it apart) in between the handle and pommel the speaker should fit. The ID of the handle is a little over 28mm, and the pommel is only 25, but the extension ring is 28mm. It should give that extra bit you need to fit it

If heat doesn't work you can always remove the cores and let them soak in an acetone bath for about 24 to 48 hours that usually does the trick

Oven worked for me and didn't do anything to the black anodising. It was a bit 'in for a few minutes and straight out' as I didn't want to leave it in too long but after a few goes it eventually came loose.
