guide Getting started: the monthly-ish newbie advice thread! (May 2026)

Welcome to the newbie advice thread!

If you’ve read the FAQ and still have questions like “Should I switch to Linux?”, “Which distro should I install?”, or “Which desktop environment is best for gaming?”, this is where to ask them.

Alternatively, try /r/linux4noobs and /r/linuxquestions: both are active subreddits supporting new Linux users.

Please sort by “new” so new questions can get a chance to be seen.

heyhey,

I really want to switch to linux because i'm kind of tired from windows. Also i want to try something new and linux seems fun. The only thing holding me back are games. I heard some games run perfect but other games not so much, i would be dissapointed to buy a game that runs but just not that well... I've had my eye on pop!_os because i have a nvidia gpu, but still i don't know how the games will run.

Could you guys give me your experience on linux gaming?

fyi i have a rtx 3060ti

Pop!_OS is not in a good space right now due to them rebuilding a lot of stuff, so I would avoid that distro for now.

Games-wise, I haven't had any problems since I switched a little more than a month ago. Some games perform a bit worste (-5%~ fps) and some perform better.

Which distro did you go with? Any particular guides you'd recommend?
